Abstract:<p>Yunnan, located in southwestern China, harbors more than 19,000 higher plants, which represents the highest plant diversity in the country. However, plant diversity in Yunnan faces enormous threats today, including habitat destruction and fragmentation, environmental pollution, and over-exploitation of natural resources. Despite recent efforts to protect biodiversity, there are still thousands of threatened species, some of which have become extinct. We analyzed available data to gain a greater understanding of plant diversity and the status of plant conservation in Yunnan. We found that southern, southeastern, and northwestern Yunnan are hotspots of total species, endemic species, specimens, new species and threatened species, whereas southeastern Yunnan are hotspots for plant species with extremely small populations. Moreover, we found that there are still conservation gaps and poorly protected areas in central, eastern, and northeastern Yunnan. We conclude that continued modern investigation is required, as are systematics research, the development of comprehensive databases, and government support. We recommend that conservationists pay more attention to building and improving functional protection systems and popularizing science.</p>

Orchid conservation in the biodiversity hotspot of southwestern China

Abstract:Xishuangbanna is on the northern margins of tropical Asia in southwestern China and has the largest area of tropical forest remaining in the country. It is in the Indo-Burma hotspot and contains 16% of China's vascular flora in <0.2% of the country's total area (19,690 km(2) ). Rapid expansion of monoculture crops in the last 20 years, particularly rubber, threatens this region's exceptional biodiversity. To understand the effects of land-use change and collection on orchid species diversity and determine protection priorities, we conducted systematic field surveys, observed markets, interviewed orchid collectors, and then determined the conservation status of all orchids. We identified 426 orchid species in 115 genera in Xishuangbanna: 31% of all orchid species that occur in China. Species richness was highest at 1000-1200 m elevation. Three orchid species were assessed as possibly extinct in the wild, 15 as critically endangered, 82 as endangered, 124 as vulnerable, 186 as least concern, and 16 as data deficient. Declines over 20 years in harvested species suggested over-collection was the major threat, and utility value (i.e., medicinal or ornamental value) was significantly related to endangerment. Expansion of rubber tree plantations was less of a threat to orchids than to other taxa because only 75 orchid species (17.6%) occurred below the 1000-m-elevation ceiling for rubber cultivation, and most of these (46) occurred in nature reserves. However, climate change is projected to lift this ceiling to around 1300 m by 2050, and the limited area at higher elevations reduces the potential for upslope range expansion. The Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden is committed to achieving zero plant extinctions in Xishuangbanna, and orchids are a high priority. Appropriate in and ex situ conservation strategies, including new protected areas and seed banking, have been developed for every threatened orchid species and are being implemented.

Abstract:QuestionWe investigated the bryophyte communities on tree boles along three altitudinal gradients located within different types of forested area to answer the following questions: (1) how many bole epiphytic bryophyte species are there; (2) what are the dominant species; (3) what are the richness patterns of epiphytic bryophyte communities along the altitudinal gradients; and (4) what are the major drivers and conservation implications of these patterns?LocationThree protected forested areas in sub-montane (Mengla transect: 800-1400m), montane (Zhenyuan transect: 2000-2600m) and sub-alpine (Lijiang transect: 3200-3800m) regions in Yunnan, SW China.MethodSixty 20mx20m sampling plots were established, five at each of 12 altitudes at 200-m intervals along the transects. Species composition and cover of bryophytes were investigated from 594 subplots (each 400cm(2)) on large tree boles of these plots. One-way ANOVAs were adopted to test for differences in species diversity among different transects. Multi-dimensional scaling in two dimension (MDS-2D) ordinations were conducted to assess similarity of bryophyte communities among study transects and altitudes. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was applied to relate species composition to selected environmental variables.ResultsThe three protected forests in Yunnan harboured 226 epiphytic bryophyte species belonging to 101 genera and 46 families, which were essential components of biodiversity of the entire forest ecosystem. In total, 99% of bryophyte species (224 species) showed varying degrees of local rarity. Smooth mat, fan and turf dominated in the sub-montane, montane and sub-alpine forests, respectively. Significantly lower bryophyte species richness was detected in the sub-montane area, which may be partly attributed to higher temperature, limited water availability and more frequent human disturbance. Epiphytic bryophytes exhibited a hump-shaped species richness pattern with increasing altitude. Peak richness coincided with highest moisture levels at ca. 2600m.ConclusionsBased on the presence of a high diversity of bryophytes and a high percentage (99%) of locally rare species growing on tree boles, this study emphasizes the importance of conserving these forests in Yunnan. Additionally, the regional pattern of lower epiphytic bryophyte diversity in warmer, drier areas shown in this study reveals how emerging climate change threatens Yunnan's epiphytic bryophytes.
Diversity of epiphytic orchids in fragmental limestoneforests in Xishuangbanna, China

Abstract:There are abundant orchid species in tropical limestone forests in Xishuangbanna. Many are fragmented due to recent large-scale cultivation of rubber trees in the area. The aim of this study is to explore the diversity of epiphytic or-chids in fragmented limestone forest and the effects of habitat fragmentation. We established 29 of plots 15 m2 in 4 tropi-cal limestone forests,and recorded a total of 1528 individuals of epiphytic orchids belonging to 76 species and 34 genera using Canonical Correspondence Analysis with species richness and abundance, and with aspect, slope, elevation, to-pography, canopy density and forest types as environmental factors. We found that the distribution of epiphytic orchids in limestone forests was affected by altitude and forest type significantly. Species richness of epiphytic orchids in higher ele-vations, Qingyan Village and Baca Village, was higher than Greenstone rain forests and Mannalan in low elevations. Habitat fragmentation had no effect on the diversity and abundance of epiphytic orchids in tropical limestone rain forests which might be fragmented on a short temporal scale. Regarding our findings, protecting harsh limestone for-est habitats is highly important for the protection of orchid diversity.

Abstract:Yunnan, an inland province at a low latitude and high elevation, lying between 21°09′–29°15′ N and 97°32′–106°12′ E in southwestern China, has a vast territory with diversified and unique nature resources. There are more than 18 000 high plant species (51.6% of China's total) and 1836 vertebrate species (54.8% of China's total) living in Yunnan on a land area of 39.4 × 104km2, i.e., only 4.1% of China's total. Among 15000 seed plants found in Yunnan there are 151 rare and endangered plant species (42.6% of China's protected plants). Out of 335 China priority protected wild animals, Yunnan has 243 species, accounting for 72.5% of China's total, 15% of which are species endemic to Yunnan. However, Yunnan's biodiversity is faced with the menace of excessive exploitation of resources and changes in environmental conditions caused by the activities of an expanding human population. This paper discusses the background, the composition, and the structure of Yunnan's biodiversity. Its biodiversity fragility and the threatened situation are also discussed. Suggestions and recommendations on the strategy and actions of Yunnan biodiversity conservation and sustainable development are proposed.

Geographic distribution patterns and status assessment of threatened plants in China

Abstract:Large scale heterogeneous distribution of biodiversity has become a hot topic for ecologists and conservationists. A threat status assessment combined with geographic distribution patterns of threatened plants in China has been conducted at a national scale in this study based upon a distribution database that refers to both specimen records and published references. Currently, 302 threatened plant species are cataloged in the “National Protected Key Wild Plants” in China belonging to 92 families and 194 genera. Results of the assessment according to the Categories and Criteria system of The World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List indicate that three species have been assessed as Extinct in Wild (EW) while a further 79, 99 and 112 species have been assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), and Vulnerable (VU), respectively. Distribution patterns of threatened plants were analyzed with GIS to identify areas of high species diversity. It was found that threatened plant species occur unevenly within counties and are concentrated in the following eight hotspots: the central and southern Hengduanshan mountain area; the southeast regions of Yunnan as well as Xishuangbanna and southwestern Guangxi; the southern Hainan island; the border mountainous regions of Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi provinces; the mountainous regions of southwestern Hubei and northern Hunan; southwestern Zhejiang and western Fujian; central Sichuan and southern Gansu; and the western mountains of Guangdong. Moreover, the 12 counties with the greatest number of threatened plant species represent cumulatively more than 50% of the total listed species and, therefore, are the regions in China that should be prioritized for conservation efforts. By overlapping the map of threatened plant species with the distribution of national nature reserves, a gap was identified in protected areas. This research will ultimately provide insights for prioritizing biodiversity conservation as well as processing the mechanisms of distribution patterns.

Abstract:Global biodiversity loss and mass extinction of species have raised serious global concerns, especially in fragile ecosystems. Karst forest, a well-known fragile ecosystem, is served as a natural laboratory for biogeographical, ecological, evolutionary, and taxonomic research. However, species richness and distribution patterns in karst forests largely remain unclear. Orchidaceae has been regarded as the "flagship" group of plant diversity. In this study, we use Wanfengshan Nature Reserve in southeast Yunnan, China, as a model to determine the conservation status of orchids in the karst forest by conducting systematic field surveys in the past three years from 2019 to 2022. In total, we identified 78 orchid species in 35 genera in Wanfengshan Nature Reserve. The dominant species were Bulbophyllum andersonii, Eria coronaria, Nervilia mackinnonii and Paphiopedilum micranthum. Multiple life forms were also observed, including epiphyte (14.29%), facultative epiphyte (18.18%), lithophyte (23.38%), and terrestrial (44.15%). Orchid species richness showed a bimodal pattern varied with altitude, the higher richness was recorded at 1,500-1,600 and 1,200-1,300 m, while the minimum was below 1,100 m. Each independent hill is rich in orchid species including 'endemic' species. A total of 25 (33.8%) orchid species were considered threatened by the Redlist of Chinese Vascular Plants (Qin et al., 2017), including 3 CR species, 5 EN species and 17 VU species. We call for more research addressing the mechanisms of ecological adaption, mycorrhizal interactions, and pollination of orchids in karst forests, and effective ways for recovery and conservation of orchids.
Species Composition and Distribution of Bryophytes on Different Substrate Types in Middle Mountain Moist Evergreen Broad-leaved Forest in Ailao Mountains

Abstract:As an important component in montane moist forest ecosystems, bryophyte plays key roles in sustaining biodiversity and facilitating many ecological processes. The species composition and association of bryophytes on four substrates of CWD (coarse woody debris), canopy, forest floor and rock were investigated in middle mountain moist evergreen broad-leaved forest in Ailao Mt., Yunnan. The results showed this region boasted a rich bryophyte-flora which yielded 141 species belonging to 38 families and 69 genera, with Meteoriaceae (14 spp.) and Dicranaceae (13 spp.) predominating. 27 species appeared in more than 3 types of substrates. Host trunk had the largest number of species (94 spp.) among all substrate types. It found that there was a trend of bryophyte diversity decreased with increase of species association among dominant species of bryophyte at the level of microhabitat, based on the analysis of species association on different substrates in the natural forest.
Biodiversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in a tropical rainforest of Xishuangbanna, southwest China

Abstract:The tropical rainforests of Xishuangbanna in southwestern China are located at the northern margin of the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. They harbour a high diversity of animals and plants. We investigated the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in soil under trees in these forests in order to establish if these fungi are also highly diverse. One hundred and eighteen rhizosphere soil samples were collected from a tropical rainforest in Xishuangbanna, and 525 arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal spores (or sporocarp) samples were obtained using the wet-sieve method. Twenty-seven species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were identified from the collections. The species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were of the genera Acaulospora (9 species), Gigaspora (1 species), Glomus (13 species), Sclerocystis (3 species) and Scutellospora (1 species). Acaulospora and Glomus were dominant at the study site. The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi spore density ranged from 25 to 2550 per 100 g soil (average 675), and the species richness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi ranged from1-7 (average 4.4). Although tropical rainforests support a high diversity of plants, their associated symbiotic fungi are not as diverse as we had expected, possibly because arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are not specific to their host plants.

Abstract:摘要: 附生植物是山地森林生态系统中重要的结构性成分。因受林冠调查技术限制, 人们对林冠附生植物知之甚少。本文在前人有关西双版纳植物区系研究的基础上, 结合野外调查和标本资料, 对该地区附生植物的物种组成与分布进行了整理。结果表明, 西双版纳热带森林附生维管植物共有29科134属486种, 约占全部维管植物的11%。附生兰科是最丰富的类群(69属293种), 其中以石斛属(Dendrobium) (49种)和石豆兰属(Bulbophyllum) (48种)物种数最多。蕨类是仅次于兰科的附生类群(13科38属97种), 其中水龙骨科(51种)占附生蕨类总数的50%以上。基于生活史和养分来源的划分标准, 该地区48%的附生物种属于兼性附生, 其次是以兰科为主的专性附生(46%), 半附生仅占6%。从区系上看, 西双版纳附生植物属的分布具有明显的热带亚洲性质。附生植物主要分布于资源受限的林冠生境, 对环境变化极为敏感, 在人为干扰日益加剧的背景下, 这类植物正面临严重威胁。因此, 需要加强对西双版

Abstract:Yuanjiang dry–hot valley is located in the southwest of mainland China. It is a sparsely vegetated area with a fragile arid ecosystem. Although the valley previously had forest cover, it has become a tropical montane savannah in recent decades. Mechanisms controlling plant species distribution in such dry–hot valleys are unclear. Clarifying this will be beneficial to sustainable ecosystem management in dry–hot valleys. This study explored the relationship between diversity patterns of plant species and their environments in the lowland of this dry–hot valley. To achieve this, transects and plots were arranged along the river channel. Alpha and beta diversity indices were calculated to quantify biodiversity changes between species and environments. Estimated species, rarity, and abundance indices were also utilized to examine the correlation among species, their population size, and their environment: Species_estimated (expected number of species in t pooled plots), Singletons (the number of species with only one individual in t pooled plots), Uniques (the number of species living in one plot in t pooled plots), ACE (species richness estimator with coverage-based abundance), ICE (species richness estimator with coverage-based incidence), and Chao2 (species richness estimator extrapolated from Singletons). Fifty years of meteorological records, including temperature and precipitation, were utilized as climate variables. The results indicated the following findings: (1) alpha diversity was higher closer to the river, whereas the beta diversity was higher towards the lower sections of the river (Bray–Curtis < 0.5), but this trend was reversed in the perpendicular transects; (2) total phosphorous (TP) and total potassium (TK) were higher on flatter ground, tending to be associated with raised nitrogen (TN) and organic matter (OM); (3) soil nutrients were higher towards the lower sections of the river, corresponding to an increased number of species; (4) water supply determined plant distribution, with soil condition determining water retention; (5) the estimated species and their rarity and abundance indices were associated with proximity to the river, indicating heterogeneity of habitats and soil condition; and (6) fern species could be used as indicators representing the xeric environment of Yuanjiang dry–hot valley. Plant cover was reduced at low altitudes, with high temperatures and a low water supply. These results draw attention to the need for specific policy formation to protect the microhabitats and manage the environment of the Yuanjiang valley.

Abstract:Biodiversity plays an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of the earth. The study of traditional knowledge related to biological resources is a hot issue in the field of international biodiversity conservation. Xishuangbanna is a key area of biodiversity and a cultural hotspot of international significance. According to the Technical Regulation for Classification, Investigation, and Inventory of Traditional Knowledge Relating to Biological Diversity issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, we investigated and catalogued the traditional knowledge related to biodiversity of the Jino people who have lived in Xishuangbanna for generations, and collected 490 entries of traditional knowledge related to biodiversity of the Jino people. Drawing on the traditional knowledge diversity index calculation method proposed by Wang Guoping, the overall traditional knowledge α-diversity index of the Jino people is 0.63, indicating that the richness of the traditional knowledge of the Jinuo people is relatively high. The traditional culture related to biodiversity, the traditional knowledge related to agricultural genetic resources, and the traditional technology related to the sustainable utilization of biological resources are relatively rich and diverse. The diversity index is 0.86, 0.82 and 0.79, respectively. In addition, Xishuangbanna has invested a lot of energy in biodiversity protection, including the establishment of nature reserves, botanical gardens, zoos, ecological tea gardens and other species reserves, and the promulgation of laws and policies related to biodiversity protection, and has achieved remarkable results in in situ protection and ex situ protection. On the basis of analyzing the progress and achievements of biodiversity conservation in Xishuangbanna, this study points out that Xishuangbanna faces challenges such as the loss of traditional knowledge, insufficient conservation efforts, and great changes in land use, and puts forward corresponding suggestions.

Bryophyte Diversity and the Effect of Soil Formation along with Water Conservation in Karst Rocky Desertification Region

Abstract:Karst rocky desertification is an important ecological and environmental problem restricting the sustainable development in the southwest of China.To address this issue,investigations and sampling sets of bryophytes were carried out in Zhiyundong mountain area of Yunnan Province,in January 2012.Totally 75 samples were collected,and the morphological classification method was applied to identify species.The results showed that there were 11 families,25 genera and 53 species of bryophytes.The decreasing order of richness and species of bryophytes were: no rocky desertification area(number of species: 34,richness index: 2.8748) mild rocky desertification area(number of species: 14,richness index: 0.1941) moderate rocky desertification area(number of species: 12,richness index:-1.1767) serious rocky desertification area(number of species: 7,richness index:-1.8923);the difference of species coefficient in rocky desertification area were small: 0.3750(serious rocky desertification areas with moderate rocky desertification area),0.3077(the serious rocky desertification area with mild rocky desertification area),0.3846(moderate rocky desertification area with mild desertification area);the difference of species similarity coefficient in rocky desertification area and no rocky desertification area were larger: 0.0714(the serious rocky area with no rocky desertification area) and 0.0952(mild rocky desertification area with no rocky desertification area);the evenness of four rocky desertification areas were steady: 0.5900,0.5133,0.4899 and 0.6107,respectively;The ranges of biomass,soil quantity and saturated water adsorption rate of the six dominant bryophytes(Tortella tortuosa(Hedw.) Limpr.,Hyophila involuta(Hook.) Jaeg.,Weissia exserta(Broth.P.C.Chen),Didymodon nigrescens(Mitt.) K.Saito,Brachythecium rutabulum(Hedw.) B.S.G.and Trichostomum platyphyllum(Broth.ex Iisiba) P.C.Chen) in karst rocky desertification areas were: 0.962 gm2 to 9.545 gm2,1.294 gm2 to 40.181 gm2,and 8.890 gm2 to 82.508 gm2,respectively.Therefore,the results indicated that the bryophytes could be the pioneer plants in karst rocky desertification area.

Abstract:Based on the field survey,the plant diversity of Changzhou Island,Guangzhou was studied.There are a total of 487 vascular plant species belonging to 358 genera,127 families on the island,and the dominating vegetation are secondary evergreen broad-leaved forest and artificial vegetation.The diversity and geographical area of the wild plant on Changzhou Island were analyzed,the results indicated that few families are the dominant components of flora,and tropical elements predominate in the flora but there is a degree influence of temperate elements.Finally,suggestions for the protection of plant diversity were proposed.
Species Composition and Ecological Characteristics of Ferns on the Tropical Montane Evergreen Broad-Leaved Forest in Xishuangbanna

Abstract:Based on the data from 4 sampling plots of 50 m×50 m(divided into 400 small plots of 5 m×5 m),floristic composition and ecological characteristics of the tropical montane evergreen broad-leaved forest in Xishuangbanna were studied. Total 64 fern species were recorded from the forest. These ferns were dominated by Chamaephytes and Geophytes with leathery and papery leaves. In species composition,Woodwardia japonica,Athyrium dissifolium,Brainea insignis,Microlepia calvescens,Arachniodes spectabilis and Dryopteris pseudosparsa are the most abundant species with high IVI and considered to be preferential species to the tropical montane evergreen broad-leaved forest. The species Pteris menglaensis is suggested to be an exclusive species to the forest although it is not an abundant species.

Abstract:China, one of the world's "megabiodiversity countries", is home to more than 30 000 vascular plant and 6300 vertebrate species. Over thousands of years, however, cultivation has led to the disappearance of many of these species from the plains and lowland areas. The mountain regions still harbor large numbers of species, because there have been fewer human and natural disturbances and there are more diverse habitats. We used county level species distribution databases to explore patterns of biodiversity and to identify biodiversity hotspots within China. Ten hotspot ecoregions were identified, containing 3110 plant genera (92.0% of the country's total), 220 (90.5%) endemic plant genera, 366 (94.3%) endangered plants, and 254 (72.2%) endangered vertebrates, 427 (91.0%) terrestrial mammal species, and 65 (85.5%) endemic mammals. All 10 hotspot ecoregions are located in the mountainous areas of China. Although high richness of overall, endangered, and endemic plants and animals co-occurred in many of the same hotspot ecoregions, they often occurred in different counties within these ecoregions and showed low spatial congruence. In conclusion, China's mountain regions are critical for protecting biodiversity and should be made conservation priorities in the future.
Agrobiodiversity and in situ conservation in ethnic minority communities of Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province, Southwest China

Abstract:Background: Xishuangbanna of Yunnan Province, southwest of China belongs to a global biodiversity and cultural hotspot. Agrobiodiversity plays an essential role in local livelihoods and traditional culture in the region. However, preliminary studies suggest that diversity of crop plants and livestock species is declining. We hypothesized that agrobiodiversity and traditional means of preserving agrobiodiversity are threatened because of changes in government policy in favor of commercial plantations, land use change and changes in traditional agricultural practices. We investigated whether or not agrobiodiversity was declining, the specific causes, and signs of active biodiversity conservation practices in ethnic minority communities of Xishuangbanna which could form the basis for extensive in situ conservation programmes. Methods: A series of field studies to document trends in agrobiodiversity were conducted in different ethnic minority communities in Menghai County, Mengla County and Jinghong City of Xishuangbanna of Yunnan Province, southwest of China between July 2015 and February 2016. Data was obtained through the use of semi-structured questionnaires, field observation and participatory rural appraisal (PRA) tools. A total of 360 ethnic households provided information on current status, functions, characteristics, changes, and threatened factors of farming crop and livestock resources. Some measures for in situ conservation of agricultural biological resources were also researched using PRA methods. Results: Two hundred twenty-six crop varieties belonging to 31 families, 71 genera and 101 species were identified in Xishuangbanna, which included 83 vegetable crops, 77 food crops, 24 spice crops, 22 fruit crops, 13 cash crops, 6 oil crops, and 1 cloth crop, respectively. There were 15 livestock varieties, belonging to 6 major species: cattle, pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, and geese. Different crop and livestock resources had their own characteristics, functions and threatened factors. Since 2002, agroecosystem, crop diversity and livestock diversity have declined greatly over the Xishuangbanna region as a whole under implementation of the Sloping Land Conversion Program (SLCP). Swidden agriculture was completely eliminated under this program and gradually replaced by large land areas devoted to rubber, tea and banana plantations. Villager numbers engaging in farming production and population of crops and livestock were greatly decreased, particularly in terms of production of local traditional varieties. However, some in situ conservation measures such as seeds preservation, planting of traditional crops and raising livestock have played an important role in local agrobiodiversity conservation. Conclusion: Abundant agricultural resources and agrobiodiversity are critical to the local livelihood and maintenance of traditional culture in Xishuangbanna. However, agrobiodiversity and related traditional culture have been greatly impacted by implementation of the SLCP since 2002. Therefore, in future conservation of agrobiodiversity, incorporating some sustainable protection measures based in local communities such as convening seed exchange fairs, conserving traditional varieties in permanent plots, making a visual documentary of indigenous cultivation, and providing traditional agricultural products to tourists should be carefully considered and adopted.
Biodiversity and ecological network of epiphytic bryophytes and their host trees in the forests of the southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract:The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), the highest and largest plateau in the world, plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of the global ecosystem and China's ecological barriers. The QTP ecosystems are facing serious challenges under the scenario of global climate change. Epiphytic plant diversity is one of the most significant contributors to forest diversity. Epiphytic bryophytes play an important role in forest ecosystem functioning. However, previous studies of epiphytic bryophyte diversity have rarely considered both phorophyte diversity and their ecological networks, factors that are crucial for revealing the ecological processes of community assembly and the mechanisms of biodiversity maintenance and ecosystem stability. We investigated the diversity of epiphytic bryophytes and their host trees in 18 forest sites in the southeastern QTP and analyzed the characteristics of their ecological network. A total of 57 epiphytic bryophyte species in 35 genera and 24 families and 72 individuals of host trees belonging to 14 genera and 10 families were recorded. Epiphytic bryophyte species on Picea , Abies , and Sorbus accounted for 77% of all species. The ecological network structure of epiphytic bryophytes-phorophytes exhibited low connectance and nestedness and a low degree of specialization. The cover of epiphytic bryophytes was significant positively correlated with host tree size (diameter at breast height) and not significantly correlated with bark roughness. Both tree size and bark roughness were weakly positively correlated with epiphytic bryophyte richness. The study results showed that increasing tree diversity is essential for the maintenance of the epiphytic bryophyte diversity in forests of the QTP. Biodiversity conservation of epiphytic bryophytes is consistent with conservation of their host trees.

Abstract:Bryophytes, represented by mosses, liverworts, and hornworts, contribute substantially to forest ecosystems in terms of nutrient cycling, water retention, water availability, plant biomass, and plant community maintenance. Forests provide numerous types of habitat for bryophytes, especially the ground floor. To clarify the ground bryophyte diversity and distribution in broadleaved forests, we used microcoenose sampling to investigate ground bryophytes in 34 sample plots (10 × 10 m) in the Mabian Dafengding National Nature Reserve (MDNR), Sichuan Province. Species diversity and environmental factor relationships were analyzed by using α and β diversity indexes, as well as Pearson's correlation analysis. Detrended canonical correspondence analysis (DCCA) was applied to analyze the relationships between species distribution and environmental factors. A total of 230 bryophyte species were identified in MDNR. These species include 67 liverwort species belonging to 26 genera of 20 families and 163 moss species belonging to 65 genera of 28 families. Diversity of ground bryophytes was negatively correlated to shrub cover, canopy cover, and tree number, but without significant correlations to altitude, slope, aspect, vegetation type, and herb cover. The DCCA ordination of relationships between ground bryophytes and environmental factors showed that altitude, aspect, vegetation type, and shrub cover were important to the distribution of dominant ground bryophyte species. This study quantitatively related bryophytes diversity and distribution to environmental factors, which is helpful in understanding the ecological niche of various bryophytes.

Abstract:Discovering novel Xylaria species. The genus Xylaria comprises a diverse group of fungi with a global distribution and significant ecological importance, known for being a source of bioactive secondary metabolites with antibacterial, antioxidative, anticarcinogenic, and additional properties. In this study, we present a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the species of Xylaria found in some parts of southern China, characterized by an extensive multilocus phylogeny analysis based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS), TUB2 (β‐tubulin), and DNA‐directed RNA polymerase II subunit 2 (rpb2) gene regions. Morphological examination and detailed comparative analyses of the collected specimens were conducted to determine the distinctiveness of each species. The multilocus phylogeny approach allowed us to infer evolutionary relationships and assess species boundaries accurately, leading to the identification of 40 novel Xylaria species hitherto unknown to science. The newly described species are: X. baoshanensis, X. bawanglingensis, X. botryoidalis, X. dadugangensis, X. doupengshanensis, X. fanglanii, X. glaucae, X. guizhouensis, X. japonica, X. jinghongensis, X. jinshanensis, X. kuankuoshuiensis, X. liboensis, X. negundinis, X. orbiculati, X. ovata, X. pseudoanisopleura, X. pseudocubensis, X. pseudobambusicola, X. pseudoglobosa, X. pseudohemisphaerica, X. pseudohypoxylon, X. puerensis, X. qianensis, X. qiongzhouensis, X. rhombostroma, X. serratifoliae, X. shishangensis, X. shuqunii, X. shuangjiangensis, X. sinensis, X. tongrenensis, X. umbellata, X. xishuiensis, X. yaorenshanensis, X. yinggelingensis, X. yumingii, X. yunnanensis, X. zangmui, and X. zonghuangii. The study's findings shed light on the distinctiveness of the newly described species, supported by both morphological distinctions and phylogenetic relationships with their close relatives. This taxonomic revision significantly contributes to our understanding the diversity of Xylaria in China and enriches the knowledge of fungal biodiversity worldwide.
