Abstract:The directional control of molecular dissociation with a laser electric field waveform is a paradigm and was demonstrated for a variety of molecules. In most cases, the directional control occurs via a dissociative ionization pathway. The role of laser-induced coupling of electronic states in the dissociating ion versus selective ionization of oriented neutral molecules, however, could not be distinguished for even small heteronuclear molecules such as CO. Here, we introduce a technique, using elliptically polarized pump and linearly polarized two-color probe pulses, that unambiguously distinguishes the roles of laser-induced state coupling and selective ionization. The measured photoelectron momentum distributions governed by the light polarizations allow us to coincidentally identify the ionization and dissociation from the pump and probe pulses. Directional dissociation of CO+ as a function of the relative phase of the linearly polarized two-color pulse is observed for both parallel and orthogonally oriented molecules. We find that the laser-induced coupling of various electronic states of CO+ plays an important role for the observed directional bond breaking, which is verified by quantum calculations.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a general technique to study dissociation channels of singly ionized heteronuclear diatomic molecules by comparing the branching ratios of these channels induced by a light field either parallel or perpendicular to the molecular axis. The experimental results show that a singly ionized heteronuclear diatomic molecule, if it dissociates, will be strongly influenced by its detailed electronic structure. Our study of single-ionization-induced dissociation demonstrates the fundamental difference between ionization dynamics in strong fields versus weak fields.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate directional bond breaking in dissociative single ionization of H-2 driven by circularly polarized two-color ultrashort pulses of counter-and co-rotating laser fields. Trefoil or semilunar patterns of directional proton emission in a two-dimensional space spanned by the laser fields are observed, which can be finely controlled by varying the relative phase of the counter-or co-rotating circularly polarized two-color fields, respectively. Our results open new possibilities to manipulate two-dimensional directional bond breaking of molecules by strong laser fields.

Abstract:We show that the electronic dynamics in a molecule driven by a strong field is complex and potentially even counterintuitive. As a prototype example, we simulate the interaction of a dissociating H-2(+) molecule with an intense infrared laser pulse. Depending on the laser intensity, the direction of the electron's motion between the two nuclei is found to follow or oppose the classical laser-electric force. We explain the sensitive dependence of the correlated electronic-nuclear motion in terms of the diffracting electronic momentum distribution of the dissociating two-center system. The distribution is dynamically modulated by the nuclear motion and periodically shifted in the oscillating infrared electric field.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the dissociative single and double ionization of CO molecules by counter-rotating circularly polarized two-color (CRTC) laser fields. By coincidently measuring the electrons and the fragmented ions, trefoil asymmetric momentum distributions of C+ in the polarization plane were observed, which are mainly determined by the selective ionization of CO with asymmetric orbitals. The threefold pattern could rotate continuously in the two-dimensional space by finely tuning the relative phase of the CRTC fields, providing a new method to manipulate the directional bond breaking of molecules by strong laser fields.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the dissociative single ionization process, , of aligned molecule in intense laser fields. The yield of a vibrational structure in the kinetic energy release spectra is measured as a function of alignment angle. By quantitative comparison of the measured angle-dependent dissociation probability with the simulation of a classical model that considers ionization and thus additional interaction within the laser pulse, we are able to distinguish the dissociation pathway that contribute to the vibrational structure. It is found that for a relative low laser intensity, the vibrational structure are produced from the dissociation pathway of . As the laser intensity increases, the increasing of the population probability of higher vibrational states and the absorbtion probability of more photons makes another two dissociation pathways open and become dominant.

Abstract:We study the order in which a strong laser field removes multiple electrons from a van der Waals (vdW) cluster. The N2Ar, with an equilibrium T-shaped geometry, contains both a covalent and a vdW bond and serves as a simple yet rich example. Interestingly, the fragmenting double and triple ionizations of N2Ar with vdW bond breaking are favored when the vdW bond is aligned along the laser field polarization vector. However, the orientation of the covalent bond with respect to the laser field rules the triple ionization when both the covalent and vdW bonds are simultaneously broken. Electron-localization-assisted enhanced ionization and molecular orbital profile-dominated, orientation-dependent ionization are discussed to reveal the order of electrons release from different sites of N2Ar.
Alignment-dependent ionization of nonlinear triatomic molecules in strong laser fields

Abstract:The alignment- and channel-resolved ionization of the triatomic nonlinear molecules SO2 and H2O in strong fields has been studied using the strong-field approximation theory. When the instantaneous electric field points from O to S in SO2 or from H to O in H2O, the ionization rate is much larger than in the opposite case. The antibonding nature and destructive interference of the electron wave packets with opposite phases lead to distinct ionization suppression on the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of H2O and HOMO-1 of SO2. By controlling the relative intensity of the two-color 800 and 400 nm laser fields, the orientation-dependent ionization rate can be manipulated, and the electrons emitted from the different molecular orbitals can be disentangled in space. The orientation- and molecular-orbital-resolved ionization can be used to retrieve the complex structure of molecules to image the molecular orbitals HOMO, HOMO-1, and HOMO-2 as well as to steer the photoelectron emission of the laser-driven nonlinear molecules. Abstract:The dissociative ionization of CO in orthogonally polarized femtosecond laser pulses are studied in a pump-probe scheme. The ionization of CO by the pump pulse and the dissociation of the created CO+ by the probe pulse can be fully disentangled by identifying the photoelectron momentum distributions. Different from the dissociative ionization by a single pulse in which the CO molecule mostly breaks along the field polarization, in this pump-probe strategy, the CO+ ion created from ionization by the pump pulse is favored to dissociate when it orients orthogonal to the polarization direction of the probe pulse. It is attributed to the laser-coupling of various electronic states of the molecular ion in the dissociation process, supported by the numerical simulation of a modeled time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:We study triple-ionization-induced, spatially asymmetric dissociation of N-2 using angular streaking in an elliptically polarized laser pulse in conjunction with few-cycle pump-probe experiments. The kinetic-energyrelease dependent directional asymmetry in the ion sum-momentum distribution reflects the internuclear distance dependence of the fragmentation mechanism. Our results show that for 5-35-fs near-infrared laser pulses with intensities reaching 1015 W/cm(2), charge exchange between nuclei plays aminor role in the triple ionization of N-2. We demonstrate that angular streaking provides a powerful tool for probing multielectron effects in strong-field dissociative ionization of small molecules.
Enhancing Electron Localization in Molecular Dissociation by Two-Color Mid- and Near-Infrared Laser Fields

Abstract:The control of dissociation pathways of H-2(+) through individual manipulations of nuclear vibration and electronic transfers is theoretically studied by using the two-color mid- and near-infrared laser fields. We show that the time-delayed weak near-infrared pulse can steer the electron localization by directly manipulating the electronic transfers in the one-photon coupling region with minor influence on the nuclear motion. Our further results demonstrate that the nuclear and electronic dynamics can be efficiently and individually controlled by changing the relative phase between the two laser pulses. The best balance between the nuclear and the electronic motions and, thus, the further enhancement of electron localization compared to that of a single midinfrared field, are ultimately achieved.

Abstract:Abstract The study of the dynamics of molecular valence electrons and their coupling with nucleus motion is a frontier in ultrafast physics and ultrafast chemistry. Here, we investigate the behavior of valence electrons and nucleus wavepackets on a femtosecond time scale by the time-resolved strong-field ion momentum spectroscopy. Two orientation-dependent bond-breakages of N2O molecules from the same electronic state are studied, and the evolution of dipole moment during molecular breaking on the asymmetric Pzsum distribution is analyzed, and thus the electron localization during the molecules dissociating into ions and atoms is captured. The overall agreement between experimental and theoretical results for the orientation-dependent dissociation dynamics promotes the understanding of the evolution of nucleus wavepackets and provides a basis for the control of molecular ultrafast chemical reactions.

Abstract:In this study, we present the dissociative single ionization of CO molecules in strong laser field by measuring the time-of-flight mass spectra of the dissociative fragment C $$^+$$ with different laser intensities and polarization directions, respectively. The results indicate that the molecular ion CO $$^{+}$$ produced by over-the-barrier ionization can be populated in not only the ground $$X^2\Sigma ^{+}$$ state, but also the next two lower-lying electronic $$A^2\varPi$$ and $$B^2\Sigma ^{+}$$ states. By evaluation of the potential energy curves, we assign the multi-peak structure of the time-of-flight spectra for ion fragment C $$^+$$ to the dissociation of the vibrational states of two excited $$A^2\varPi$$ and $$B^2\Sigma ^{+}$$ states via the dissociation pathways $$|A^2\varPi -0\omega \big \rangle \rightarrow |D^2\varPi -4\omega \big \rangle$$ , $$|B^2\Sigma ^{+}-0\omega \big \rangle \rightarrow |3^2\varPi -3\omega \big \rangle$$ , and $$|B^2\Sigma ^{+}-0\omega \big \rangle \rightarrow |3^2\Sigma ^{+}-3\omega \big \rangle$$ . The results imply that the dissociation pathway of molecular cations can be selected using pump-probe technology via accurately tuned laser parameters.
Steering of Molecular Multiple Dissociative Ionization with Strong Few-Cycle Laser Fields

Abstract:Coherent control is an implicit goal of quantum physics and quantum chemistry, which have been significantly developed in utilizing light to control over the dynamics of atomic and molecular systems. We show that the process of multiple dissociative ionization of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules is controllable using an intense phase-stabilized few-cycle laser field (4.2 fs, 740 nm, $6 \times 1{0}^{14}\,\mathrm{W}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{2})$. We demonstrate that the controllable emission direction of ${\mathrm{C}}^{2+}$ from charge asymmetrical dissociation and ionization of CO dications is out of phase in a linearly polarized laser field. The strong coupling between the dissociative channels is explained with the mechanisms of recollision excitation and recollision ionization. The competition between excitation and ionization in a recollision process leads to the opposite asymmetrical property. The results provide an insight into the controllable attosecond dynamics of multiple dissociative ionization of a complex molecule.

Abstract:Being the simplest molecule on the planet, H-2, as well as its isotopes, have been the prototype systems for strong-field molecular physics for decades. Photoionization and dissociation of H-2 have been extensively investigated. After single ionization, the electron left in the molecular ion and its microscopic localization around the two dissociating nuclei can be effectively manipulated using intense femtosecond laser fields with broken symmetry. In this paper, we review the recent progress made on the sub-cycle directional control of the dissociative ionization of hydrogen molecules by tailoring the waveform of femtosecond laser fields, including few-cycle pulses and 2-color fields polarized along the same direction (one-dimension) or different directions (two-dimension).

Abstract:We simulate the time- dependent Schrodinger equation and observe the rescattering dissociation of H-2 in strong infrared laser fields. Two dissociation pathways are identified, i. e., the dissociation of H-2(+) in the 2p sigma(u) state and the dissociation of H-2 in doubly excited states. The former accounts for larger proportions as the rescattering energy is larger. The kinetic energy release of dissociative fragments reflects the temporal internuclear distance at the moment the rescattering happens.

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose a novel laser-induced inelastic diffraction (LIID) scheme based on the intense-field-driven atomic nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) process and demonstrate that, with this LIID approach, the doubly differential cross sections (DDCSs) of the target ions, e.g., Ar^{+} and Xe^{+}, can be accurately extracted from the two-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions in the NSDI process of the corresponding atoms. The extracted DDCSs exhibit a strong dependence on both the target and the laser intensity, in good agreement with calculated DDCSs from the scattering of free electrons. The LIID scheme may be extended to molecular systems and provides a promising approach for imaging of the gas-phase molecular dynamics induced by a strong laser field with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution.

Abstract:We investigate the sequential double-ionization dynamics for the dissociative channel C+ + O(+)of CO molecules in strong circularly polarized laser fields using four-particle coincidence measurements. By combining the fragmentation-pathway-resolved ionic angular distributions with the molecular frame photoelectron angular distributions distinguished for each ionization step, the significant effects of multiorbital ionization and laserdriven excitation are revealed. For the main distribution of ionic fragments in the polarization plane, the participation of the highest-occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO, HOMO-1, and HOMO-2) and the important contribution of postionization excitation are identified for various fragmentation pathways. Comparisons among different intensities further indicate the dependence of the multiorbital ionization on laser intensities. For the substantial emissions of fragments out of the polarization plane, however, the ionization from HOMO-1 (and subsequent excitation) always plays a crucial role. This work demonstrates the feasibility of disentangling the complex dynamics in molecular dissociative double ionization with the angular streaking method.

Abstract:Molecular dimers have attracted much attention in the study of molecular structure and dynamics due to their complex interactions involving both weak van der Waals and strong covalent bonds. We investigate the dissociative ionization of carbon dioxide dimers exposed to intense femtosecond laser fields. The angular distributions of ionic fragments of the breakup channels (CO2)(2)(2+) -> CO2+ + CO2+ and (CO2)(2)(3+) -> CO22+ + CO2+ strongly depend on the laser intensity. Simulations based on time-dependent density-functional theory reproduce the experimental observations qualitatively and show that the angular distribution of fragments is determined by the angle-dependent orbital ionization probability and the relative contributions of different orbitals, both of which are intensity sensitive. By comparing the ionization of the dimer with CO2 monomer, we find that the weak van der Waals bond and molecular geometry in the dimer play considerable roles. This work extends significantly earlier studies of simple linear covalent bond molecules.
