Abstract:A comprehensive analytical protocol was undertaken to elucidate the yellow colorants employed in wall paintings from the Kizil Grottoes, the Taojia Tomb, the Baiyangzhai Tomb, and polychrome figurines from the Astana Tombs, all positioned along the historical Silk Road and dating to the 6th-10th centuries AD. To unequivocally identify these colorants, multi-analytical techniques were deployed, encompassing digital microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), micro-Raman spectroscopy, and ultra-performance liquid chromatography triple quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Triple TOF-MS/MS). This comprehensive approach facilitated the unambiguous identification of both inorganic pigments, specifically vanadinite, and plant-derived colorants, including gamboge (Garcinia sp.) and Chinese cork tree (Phellodendron chinense), within these archaeological artifacts. These findings not only significantly enhance our scientific understanding of the materials and techniques utilized in the creation of these wall paintings and polychrome figurines, but also shed light on the vibrant exchange of materials and technological advancements that flourished along the ancient Silk Road.
An exploratory study on the traditional craftsmanship of polychrome Terracotta Warriors and their flaking process

Abstract:The traditional crafts used for the polychrome terracotta warriors of the Qin Dynasty were investigated based on information currently available on these objects,Traditional craftsmanship information includes the use of pig blood in the lacquer layer,the lacquer formula,the pigment layer formula,the manufacture of lacquer and pigment and the selection of pottery. Based on this information,a simulated model is made to have a lacquer layer( 35 ~ 68μm thick),and pigment layers( red pigment,20 ~ 50μm; white pigment,55 ~ 70μm; green pigment,50 ~ 70μm; and blue pigment,55 ~ 65μm). All these layers are about the same thickness as on the real terracotta warriors. The best pig blood concentration in the lacquer is 4%. Some glues are also used to apply the pigment layers: gelatin in water( 1: 32,) and egg white in water( 1: 2). The process of flaking of the pigment layers and the lacquer layer are simulated in the lab. The prepared samples provide a basic object to simulate the the process of damage,and can be used for further study of the decay mechanism and for conservation studies.

Abstract:The present work reports the new characterization results of the gilding materials used in Cave 171 of Kizil Grottoes, China, which is dated between 5th and 7th Century, A.D. Tiny samples collected from four different gilding decorations were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy with element energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) to identify the gilding structure and inorganic materials. It was discovered that both tin and gold leaves were used as the gilding foils. Interestingly, different organic mordants were used under different foils. The pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) results show that drying oil was applied as the mordant for the adhesion of tin foils while lac resin was used for gold foils. The presence of lac resin has been further confirmed by liquid chromatography-electron spray ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS). Although lac dye has been detected as the red colorant in wall paintings of Buddhist grottoes, its use as gilding mordant is a new finding. These gilding materials found in the wall paintings of Kizil Grottoes may provide some evidence of painting materials and techniques exchange along the Silk Road.
Pigments, Dyes and the Restoration History of the Painted Figurines of the Tang Dynasty from the Astana Tombs Revealed by Comprehensive Chemical Analysis

Abstract:Comprehensive micro-analyses were conducted to identify different pigments and dyes used in painted figurines of the Tang Dynasty unearthed from Astana Tombs, located along the ancient Silk Road. Interestingly, a mixture of lazurite and indigo was first discovered on a painted figurine to create a special blue hue, demonstrating that ancient Gaochang craftsmen were already skilled in using mixed colorants. Moreover, superimposition techniques were as well applied in these painted figurines, such as hematite or cinnabar overlaid on red lead. Despite the lack of unambiguous restoration records in the last century, multiple synthetic organic colorants used for repainting the lokapala figurine were successfully identified by Raman spectroscopy and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), which should be helpful for the retrospective documentation of the restoration history of these artworks. These investigations towards archaeological materials can provide precise historical facts about the artworks and fundamental knowledge for their conservation.
Comparative Study of the Materials and Lacquering Techniques of the Lacquer Objects from Warring States Period China

Abstract:In recent decades, a number of important high quality lacquer objects have been excavated from archaeological sites dating to the Warring States Period (481-221 BC), indicating the significance of the lacquer objects in that time. In order to better understand the lacquering techniques in this period, two types of lacquer objects from the Jiuliandun tomb were studied by using thermally assisted hydrolysis–methylation pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (THM-Py-GC/MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). The results revealed that a multi-layer lacquering technique was used to create the lacquer objects. Urushiol and drying oils were identified in the pigmented surface finish layer and lacquer layer, but different drying oils were identified in the ear cups and box, respectively. In addition, blood was found in the ground layer of ear cups. The results were compared with the lacquer objects from other Chu tomb, indicating that a variety of lacquering techniques were used during the Warring States period, perhaps depending on the different functions of the lacquer objects or simply reflecting different traditions.

Abstract:The development of lacquerwares reached its peak between the Warring States Period and the Han Dynasty (390-87 BC) in the Changsha region of China. By studying excavated fragments of lacquers from this period, this paper examines the constitution of various pigmented layers, such as red, black and white layers, coloured lacquer layers, namely reddish brown or reddish orange, dark-coloured or black, and silver lacquer layers, using non-destructive methods. In addition, the characteristics of lacquer production techniques in Changsha are also discussed in comparison with those of other regions in China during the same period of time.

Abstract:After the Han, lacquer finds in tombs in the Chinese world generally became rare both in the north and in the south. However, in northern China, especially during the Pingcheng period (398–493) of the Northern Wei, a certain resurgence was experienced. The later Northern Dynasties then see a drastic reduction in realia finds again. The lacquers in Pingcheng tombs were mostly used to present funerary offerings of sacrificed animals. Many lacquers were presumably products of previous ages, but some were newly manufactured in Pingcheng. In the Pingcheng funerary cult, lacquers were used in novel ways, and with novel ornamentation, as tableware for sacrifices took root in northern Shanxi. Such practices are not found elsewhere. The unique lacquer-painted coffins of Pingcheng bear images of Xianbei or Central Asians, accompanied mostly with motifs and patterns in the style of Yungang art. Based on a dominant human imagery accompanied by decorative elements, the possible origin of the famous lacquered screen from the tomb of Sima Jinlong is also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The Changsha region was an important place in China during the heyday of lacquerwares, from the Warring States Period to the Western Han Dynasty (476 bc – ad 9), when lacquerwares were used with varied styles and beautiful ornamentations. However, the process used to make lacquerware was previously unknown. By analysing samples of fragments of lacquerware found in the Changsha region dating back to between the Mid-Warring States Period and the Mid-Western Han Dynasty (390–87 bc), this paper demonstrates the varied constitution of the ground layer by analysing the features of the technique using non-destructive methods. It also shows that the use of potassium alum, gypsum, carbon and brochantite as fillers in the ground layer can be dated back to the Mid-Warring States Period. Furthermore, a comparison of techniques for ground layers from the Changsha region and other areas in China during this period is proposed on this basis.
Research on the lacquered techniques adopted by the urushiware excavated from the Fangwanggang site in Anhui of West Han Dynasty

Abstract:Some analytic methods used to study lacquer films from Fangwanggang site,an important tomb of Han Dynasty excavated in 1996.These methods were block skiving,optical microscopy,ash test,X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,etc.The micrographs showed that several obvious layers existed in the lacquer film,including piaster layer,ground layer and painting layer.Both the red lacquer films and red patterns have natural lacquer as film-former and cinnabar(HgS)as red pigment.During Han Dynasty in China,people always applied the red lacquer liquid onto the black or brown film,that belonged to a conventional regulation men- tioned in the contemporary documents.Some quartz grains had been observed in the lacquer film.The micrograms showed that they are in good psephicity with small grain diameter of about 4～70(m,indicating the quartz was pro- cessed by human.The infrared spectrum of a kind of melanocratic drawing which was popular during Han Dynasty seemed similar to that of the brown film.This indicated that natural lacquer could been used as the film-former in both of them.

[Spectral analysis of pottery-painting pigments from the Monarch Bai Tomb of Zhongli State]

Abstract:Based on the analysis of Raman spectroscopy and XRD methods, the structures of different pigments on the painted pottery from the Monarch Bai Tomb of Zhongli State in the middle and late Spring and Autumn period at Shungdun Village, Bengbu City, Anhui Province were analyzed. The result shows that all the pigments, including red, yellow and black pigments, have been well preserved, and these three pigments were identified as cinnabar, goethite and carbon black respectively. Both Raman spectroscopy and XRD analysis show that the crystal composition of red pigments, cinnabar, is very pure without quartz crystal, the associated crystal of natural cinnabar, and at the same time the crystal size of cinnabar is possibly at the nanometer scale. It suggests that this red pigments perhaps were a synthetic material or processed and purified by our ancestors. The discovery of goethite shows that this mineral has been used as pigments as early as in the Spring and Autumn period. This is the earliest example that goethite was used as yellow pigments.
Microchemical Study of Pigments and Binders in Polychrome Relics from Maiji Mountain Grottoes in Northwestern China

Abstract:In this study, an integrated analytical method was developed to investigate the composition of both the inorganic pigments and organic binders of polychrome relics in Maiji Mountain Grottoes in northwestern China. Cross-sections of each sample were prepared at the beginning of the study, and all experiments were carried out on these cross-sections. Polychromic structures were revealed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy-backscattered electron imaging. Inorganic materials were determined by using SEM coupled with an energy dispersive spectrometer and μ-Raman spectrometer, whereas organic materials were identified by staining techniques and highly sensitive and specific immunofluorescence microscopy. Data showed that the red colors are attributed to one or two pigments of red ochre, cinnabar, and minium; the blue pigment is natural lazurite; the green pigment is ascribed to atacamite; the white color is attributed to potassium feldspar; and the black surface is formed by the discoloration of minium to plattnerite under the influence of environmental factors. Regarding organic binders used in painting and preparation layers, mammalian animal glue and chicken egg white were both found alone or in mixture. Finally, the conclusion is made that the Secco technique is employed in polychrome relics from Maiji Mountain Grottoes.

Abstract:In order to investigate the evolution of Chinese lacquering techniques, seven pieces of lacquer Lian from the Warring States Period to the Yuan Dynasty (475 BC–1368 AD) were analyzed by means of cross-section observation, Raman spectroscopy (RS), and thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (Py-GC/MS). The results revealed that the lacquer Lian consisted of a three-layer structure, encompassing a pigment layer on the surface, an undercoat layer in the middle, and a ground layer. The red mineral pigment utilized was cinnabar, while a combination of Chinese lacquer and drying oil served as the primary organic material. Although lacquering techniques had undergone minimal changes from the Warring States Period to the Yuan Dynasty, the species of drying oil had changed, based on the fact that boiled tung oil was found in the ground layer of lacquerware from the Song Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty. The present research provides direct evidence for the inheritance and development of Chinese lacquer technology.

Abstract:Some painted pottery figurines were excavated from the tomb of Qibi Ming of the Tang Dynasty. A series of analytical techniques were employed to understand the craftsmanship of these painted pottery figurines. The pigment, cross-section, adhesive, and firing temperature were analyzed using microscopy (OM), energy X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDX), micro-Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), and a dilatometer (DIL). The results demonstrated that the surface of the pigment layers had degraded to different degrees. The pigment particles were litharge, gypsum, malachite, cinnabar, hematite, minium, white lead, and carbon black. The cross-sectional images show that the painted layer of figurines 10-0966 and 10-0678 included a pigment layer and a preparation layer. The preparation layer of both pigments was lead white. Animal glue was used as an adhesive. The firing temperature of the pottery figurines was likely 1080 °C. This study can provide more accurate information with regard to the composition of the raw materials utilized in the making of these artifacts and support the selection of appropriate substances for the purposes of conservation and restoration of the painted pottery figurines.

Abstract:This paper presents a series of detailed analysis results from lacquered wooden coffins of Emperor Qianlong's concubines (Huixian, Shujia) and second empress (Wulanala) excavated from the Eastern Regius Tombs of the Qing Dynasty, China. The analysis is focused on the materials used in the lacquered wooden coffins, specifically investigating the pigments, lacquers, organic additives and lacquering techniques using digital microscopy, SEM-EDS, XRD, micro-Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR and THM-Py-GC/MS. The results demonstrate that the mineral pigments were mainly HgS, As2S3, the golden area in the lacquer film layers mainly contained elements Au and Ag, the lacquer ash layers mainly included several layers of stucco and fiber layers arranged alternately, the lacquer sap was urushi, and heat-bodied tung oil was also present in the lacquer. Furthermore, several kinds of lacquering techniques, which demonstrated traditional Chinese lacquering and the rigid hierarchy of funerals in feudal dynasties, are also identified in this investigation.

Abstract:Seven pieces of gold foils for surface decoration of the lacquerware were excavated in the late Western Han Dynasty tomb in the area of the Jin Yang (晋阳) Ancient City site in Taiyuan (太原), Shanxi (山西), China. These gold foils portray images of the carriage, the leopard, the tigers, the ox, and the dancer with fluttering sleeves, etc., with black lines outlining the contours and red paint depicting vivid patterns. The study used Stereo Microscopes, Metallurgical Microscopy, Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (ESEM-EDS), and Laser Raman Spectroscopy (LRS) to analyse the thickness of the gold foils, the alloy composition, the composition of the paint and other surface attachments, and investigate the manufacturing process. As the results show, the thickness of the gold foils is about 26 μm. The composition is a gold-silver alloy with about 96% Au/(Au + Ag) (surface) and 98% Au/(Au + Ag) (cross-section). The metallurgical observation shows that the gold foils underwent heating and forging. The black lines on the front side are Chinese ink lines, with cracking and peeling phenomenon, and parallel polishing lines can be seen at the peeling places, while no polishing lines are observed on the back side. Some red paint made of cinnabar is above the black lines, and the binder is organic. Some lacquer residues are found on the back. According to the results of the study, the manufacturing process of the gold foils applied on the lacquerware is as follows: the gold foils are obtained by heating and forging, the front sides of the gold foils are polished, the shapes are carved out, and the gold foils are pasted on the lacquerware when the lacquerware's surface is not yet dry. The gold foils are painted with black Chinese ink and red cinnabar pigment. The study's results offer important references for understanding the manufacturing craft of the gold foils applied on the lacquerware in the late Western Han Dynasty of China and guide the conservation of the lacquerware decorated with painted gold foils.

Abstract:In the Yangtze River Delta, natural lacquer has been used as coating and adhesive since the Neolithic. At Jingtoushan Neolithic site, the earliest, deepest buried prehistoric shell mound site discovered in China's coastal areas, where stratigraphic age lies between 7,800-8,300 cal BP, we discovered the earliest lacquerwares of China. The relics are a piece of dowelled wood and an oblate wooden stick. The black coatings on the two relics were studied by using non-destructive infrared analysis, pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), and enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA), and the analysis determined that black coating on the two relics is natural lacquer. This discovery refreshes the history of natural lacquer used by humans in the Yangtze River Delta to more than 8,000 years ago and also complements the history of organic coatings used during the Neolithic period in China.

Abstract:Tomb No. 2 of Tushan in Xuzhou is the tomb of King Chu of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and it was an important archaeological discovery in China. The unique placement and crafting techniques of a lacquer coffin that was unearthed from the burial corridor are of significant importance in the study of tombs. In order to characterise the sample's microstructure, elemental composition, and structural composition, as well as to study the crafting techniques of the coffin in the corridor, a range of analytical techniques were employed, including ultra-depth microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, and XRD. The results indicate that the cross-sectional structure of the fragments comprises a pigment layer and a lacquer ash layer, with the latter being further divided into tile ash and bone ash layers. No lacquer film layer was observed. The primary colouring agent in the pigment layer was HgS, which contained a minor quantity of organic binder. The primary component of the tile ash layer was quartz, while the osseous ash layer comprised particles and collagen derived from mammalian bones. The lacquer crafting technique employed in the construction of the coffin was relatively simple and inconsistent with the assumption of it having a noble status. The findings of this research offer experimental data for the identification, preservation, and technical restoration of the corridor coffin in the future.

Abstract:: The lacquerware in Zeng Hou Yi's tomb is a representative of Chu lacquerware in the early Warring States period. In order to interpret the lacquerware patterns unearthed in Zeng Hou Yi's tomb, this paper adopts Panofsky's image research and analysis method combined with literature materials to explore the three aspects of the description of the former image, the interpretation of the image and the analysis of the image. The research shows that the lacquerware of Zeng Hou Yi tomb is featured by superb technology, exquisite pattern and rich story meaning. The formation of lacquerware patterns in Zeng Hou Yi's tomb was deeply influenced by Taoism, which carried Chu's primitive religious belief and diversified national culture. Based on the analysis of patterns, this paper aims to provide a new perspective for the study of contemporary art by studying traditional Chinese culture.

Abstract:The tomb of Hanxiu, a prime minister of the Tang dynasty who died in 740 CE, was decorated with elaborate mural paintings. The pigments used in the mural paintings were collected from representative colours before a restoration process and analyzed using micro-Raman and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis to characterize the chemical compositions. The results reveal the chromatic palette and the painting technique used in the mural paintings. Most of the pigments are natural mineral pigments similar to those excavated in previous archaeological works, except the yellow pigment is unusual. A rare mineral pigment, vanadinite [Pb5(VO4)3Cl], was employed in a large amount as the yellow pigment. This phenomenon was analyzed and compared with tomb mural paintings from varied periods and locations in ancient China. Notably, the identification of vanadinite via Raman spectra has to be performed carefully and combined with an elemental analysis to avoid misidentification.

A New Method for Treating Ancient Chinese Lacquer on Waterlogged Wood

Abstract:Chinese lacquer (raw lacquer. urushi) has a long history. According to Chinese literature. the legendary emperors Shun and Yu are said to have used lacquer painted wooden vessels for food. This is an indication that lacquerware was in use even bcforc the Xia dynasty (c. 2 I s t Century B.C.). Chinese lacquer has undergone a long proecss of devclopment. It can be traeed back at least to the Neolithic period. In 1978, a red painted wooden bowl (fig. 1) was found at a Neolithic site at Hemudu in Yuyao in the Zhcjiang province, which has bcen dated to about six thousand years ago. We studied the red painting by PY/GC-FTIR analysis. : The rcsult confirmed that the red material was vermilion lacquer. The lacquer painted bowl must be considered so far as the earliest piecc of lacquerwarc in China. Other Neolithic sites in China have also yicldcd examples of early lacquerwarc. At Changzhou in the Jiangsu province, for instance, two wooden objects were excavated: one was painted in black and the other in red and black lacquer. At least during the Shang dynasty, around the 14th Century B.C.. the lacquer handicraft must havc made a considerable advanec. Lacquers from the Shang dynasty found in higher quantitics show rieh and colourful designs. The decorative patterns were dragons and scrolls, similar to thosc found on Shang bronzes. In the history of Chinese lacquer there are two golden periods: The first is from the Warring States period to the Man dynasty (4th Century B.C. 2nd Century A.D.). The second golden period is from the Song to the Ming dynasty (9th 16th Century A.D.). During these two periods, the lacquer produetion had reached its peak, in quantity as well as in technique. F.spccially during the first golden period lacquerwarc was made in a rieh assortment of shapes, the art of lacquer painting llourished and reached heights of brilliancc. During the Han dynasty, official lacquer Workshops were cstablished. Under the control of the central government. the manufacturing of lacquer articlcs was provided for the imperial household. A great number of lacquers were discovered during archacological excavations at a dated Han dynasty tomb. They confirmed the existence of a vital lacquer craft at that time.
