Abstract:Background: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are covalently closed circular noncoding RNAs that are expressed in various life forms. CircRNAs have many characteristics, such as structural stability and tissue-specific expression that contribute to their role as a microRNA (sponge in gene regulation. Summary: Recent evidence suggests that circRNAs play an important role in the pathogenesis of cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs); however, the exact mechanism remains controversial. CircRNAs that are related to CVDs have great clinical significance. Key Messages: The present review provides an overview of the general biology of circRNAs, their relevant regulatory mechanisms, and their role in the pathophysiology of CVDs.
