Abstract:Ambient nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) have been investigated intensively due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic properties.In this work, studies in chemical composition, spatial and temporal distributions, particle size distributions, gas-particle partitioning, sources, and toxic effects of NPAHs were summarized. The concentrations of ambient NPAHs in urban areas were usually higher than those in rural areas.Due to the influences of biomass burning and motor vehicle emissions, 9-nitroanthracene had the highest contributions to ambient NPAHs in urban areas. Although NPAHs have secondary sources in summer, their peak concentrations often appear in fall and winter because of adverse meteorological conditions and elevated primary emissions. NPAHs mainly exist in the particle phase owing to their low vapor pressures, and particulate NPAHs were primarily enriched in submicron particles (Dp<1 μm). Low molecular weight NPAHs (such as 1N-NAP and 2N-NAP) can shift toward coarse particles (Dp>2.5 μm) through evaporation and condensation processes with varied temperatures.According to the modeling results of gas-particle partitioning coefficients considering different mechanisms, the adsorption of NPAHs on PM surfaces should not be neglected in the gas-particle partitioning process.Incomplete combustion of fossil and biomass fuels and secondary reactions of parent PAHs are the main sources of NPAHs in the atmosphere.Correlation analysis and diagnostic ratios were typical methods used to indicate the main sources of NPAHs, but they were unable to determine the contribution distributions of NPAH sources. According to the toxicity risk assessment of ambient NPAHs, the contributions of NPAHs in particulate matter to the mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of all PAH derivatives were several times higher than their mass fractions. Due to the cumulative effect of toxicity, NPAHs had a higher carcinogenic risk in adults. To further understand the environmental behaviors and health effects of NPAHs, it is necessary to improve their source inventories and clarify the migration and transformation processes of NPAHs in the environment.

Abstract:In 2015, we measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) collected from 5 cities in Zhejiang Province. The mean toxic equivalent quotient (TEQ) values of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) ranged between 1.2–3.1 ng/m3. The BaP-TEQ displayed seasonal trends, such that winter > spring and autumn > summer. During the winter, the most abundant individual PAHs were 4–6ring PAHs (84.04–91.65%). The median daily intake of atmospheric PAHs ranged between 2.0–7.4 ng/day for all populations, with seasonal trends identical to that of BaP-TEQ. The 95th incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values induced by PM2.5-bound PAHs were far lower than 10−6 for all populations. The data suggested that the pollution levels in the 5 Zhejiang Province cities were higher than the Chinese National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS). In the future, relevant measures should be taken to control atmospheric PAHs, especially 4–6 ring PAHs. The data also revealed no obvious cancer risk for populations residing in these 5 cities of Zhejiang Province.

Abstract:Ambient air pollution in China has a significant spatial variation due to the uneven development and different energy structures. This study characterized ambient pollution of parent and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through a 1-year measurement in two megacities in southwest China where regional PM2.5 levels were considerably lower than other regions. Though the annual average BaP levels in both two cities were below the national standard of 1.0 ng/m(3), however, by taking other PAH5 into account, PAH5 pollution were serious as indicated by high BaP equivalent concentrations (BaPEQ) of 3.8 +/- 2.6 and 4.4 +/- 1.9 ng/m(3), respectively. Risk assessment would be underestimated by nearly an order of magnitude if only using BaP in risk assessment compared to the estimation based on 26 PAHs including 16 priority and 10 non-priority isomers targeted in this study. Estimated incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCR) were comparable at two cities, at about 330-380 persons per one million, even though the mass concentrations were significantly different. Nitrated PAHs showed distinct temporal and site differences compared to the parent PAHs. High cancer risks due to inhalation exposure of PAHs and their polar derivatives in the low PM2.5-pollution southwest China suggest essential and effective controls on ambient PAHs pollution in the region, and controls should take potential health risks into account instead of solely mass concentration. Abstract:The concentration, sources and environmental risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water in urban areas of Nanjing were investigated. The range of Sigma(16)PAHs concentration is between 4,076 and 29,455 ng/L, with a mean of 17,212 ng/L. The composition of PAHs indicated that 2- and 3-ring PAHs have the highest proportion in all PAHs, while the 5- and 6-ring PAHs were the least in proportion. By diagnostic ratio analysis, combustion and petroleum were a mixture input that contributed to the water PAH in urban areas of Nanjing. Positive matrix factorization quantitatively identified four factors, including coke oven, coal combustion, oil source, and vehicle emission, as the main sources. Toxic equivalency factors of BaP (BaPeq) evaluate the environmental risks of PAHs and indicate the PAH concentration in surface water in urban areas of Nanjing had been polluted and might cause potential environmental risks. Therefore, the PAH contamination in surface water in urban areas of Nanjing should draw considerable attention.
Coal and biomass combustion emissions increase the cancer and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM 2.5 from Nanchang, central China

Abstract:This study collected 365 daily PM 2.5 samples from Nanchang City and analysed the characteristics, sources, and risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The findings indicated that the yearly average ΣPAH concentration (the sum of 15 PAHs) was 7.20 ± 4.52 ng m −3 , with the highest concentration in winter (12.24 ± 4.95 ng m −3 ), followed by autumn (7.05 ± 3.1 ng m −3 ), spring (5.85 ± 2.47 ng m −3 ) and summer (3.76 ± 1.72 ng m −3 ). The molecular characteristics and diagnostic ratios analysis suggested that the PAHs originated from vehicle exhaust, combustion (coal and biomass), and petroleum volatilisation. The results of quantitative estimation showed that vehicle exhaust and combustion sources contributed the most (about 43% and 40%) to PAHs. The petroleum industry accounted for a smaller proportion, approximately 17%. Seasonally, combustion sources (coal and biomass) contributed more in winter (56%) and autumn (51%), whereas vehicle exhaust contributed more in summer (51%) and spring (54%). High atmospheric pressure inhibited the diffusion of PAHs but high temperatures may have promoted PAH decomposition. The results of the risk assessment showed that Nanchang residents exposed to PAHs face a potentially low carcinogenic risk but a definite non-carcinogenic health risk during autumn and winter. Furthermore, adults had greater cancer and health risks compared to children. During autumn and winter, it is probable that combustion emissions were the primary contributing factor to risks of PAHs.

Abstract:Atmospheric PM2.5 samples were collected by using the active sampling method to investigate the pollution characteristics of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) at the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base, Northwest China. Furthermore, the primary sources and the contributions of secondary formation sources as well as the inhalation exposure risks were identified. The main results were as follows. The concentration levels of ∑12NPAHs in PM2.5 ranged from 2.06 ng·m-3 to 37.14 ng·m-3 at the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base. The average concentrations of ∑12NPAHs were (25.57±5.76) ng·m-3 in winter and (6.22±1.74) ng·m-3 in summer for the Baofeng sampling site associated with the energy industry. The average concentrations of ∑12NPAHs were (7.13±1.44) ng·m-3 in winter and (2.58±0.39) ng·m-3 in summer for the Yinglite sampling site associated with chemical and electricity industries. The levels of ∑12NPAHs in PM2.5 were higher in winter than those in summer because of the increased heating in winter. Atmospheric pollution levels of NPAHs at the Baofeng sampling site were generally higher than those at the Yinglite sampling because of the higher primary NPAHs emissions from coal mining and coke production in Baofeng compared with those from the chemical industry in Yinglite. The calculated nocturnal/diurnal ratios revealed that the concentrations of ∑12NPAHs in PM2.5 during the summer season were higher in the daytime than those in the nighttime, but the opposite trend occurred in winter, thus indicating that secondary formation processes made more contributions to NPAHs during summer in the daytime. The congener profiles of NPAHs were mainly composed of primary emission markers such as 2-nitrofluorene (2N-FLO) and 6-nitrochrysene (6N-CHR), which were the predominant ones in winter and summer for both the Baofeng and Yinglite sampling sites. Total proportions of 2N-FLO and 6N-CHR were 46% in winter and 73% in summer for Baofeng and 59% in winter and 55% in summer for Yinglite, respectively. Meanwhile, 3N-PHE, which is a marker compound of secondary formation processes, accounted for a higher percentage in summer especially at Yinglite. This finding revealed that the chemical production at Yinglite was associated with higher precursor emissions than that of Baofeng, and thus, more NPAHs were derived from secondary formation processes. Moreover, ∑12NPAHs/∑16PAHs ratios were calculated to identify the potential sources of NPAHs across the city. The results indicated that higher environmental temperatures in summer promoted the degradation of PAHs and secondary formation of NPAHs, and thus, secondary formation contributed more to NPAHs in summer than in winter. Furthermore, lung cancer risks induced by inhalation exposures to ∑5NPAHs were assessed based on the BaP equivalent toxicity factor. The results showed that the lung cancer risk values of ∑5NPAHs were (3.06×10-5±1.36×10-5) in winter and (1.79×10-5±0.80×10-5) in summer for the Baofeng sampling site, while the risk values were (2.85×10-5±1.20×10-5) in winter and (1.86×10-5±0.83×10-5) in summer for the Yinglite sampling site. Notably, the lung cancer risk values in our study for both sampling sites were higher than the standard limit value (1.00×10-5) of the California Environmental Protection Agency, which indicates that the local population at the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base has been subjected to potentially elevated lung cancer risks due to inhalation exposures to PM2.5-bound NPAHs.

Abstract:Sixteen U.S. EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and eleven non-priority isomers including some dibenzopyrenes were analyzed to evaluate health risk attributable to inhalation exposure to ambient PAHs and contributions of the non-priority PAHs in a megacity Nanjing, east China. The annual average mass concentration of the total 16 EPA priority PAHs in air was 51.1 ± 29.8 ng/m3, comprising up to 93% of the mass concentration of all 27 PAHs, however, the estimated Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) due to inhalation exposure would be underestimated by 63% on average if only accounting the 16 EPA priority PAHs. The risk would be underestimated by 13% if only particulate PAHs were considered, though gaseous PAHs made up to about 70% of the total mass concentration. During the last fifteen years, ambient Benzo[a]pyrene decreased significantly in the city which was consistent with the declining trend of PAHs emissions. Source contributions to the estimated ILCR were much different from the contributions for the total mass concentration, calling for the introduce of important source-oriented risk assessments. Emissions from gasoline vehicles contributed to 12% of the total mass concentration of 27 PAHs analyzed, but regarding relative contributions to the overall health risk, gasoline vehicle emissions contributed 45% of the calculated ILCR. Dibenzopyrenes were a group of non-priority isomers largely contributing to the calculated ILCR, and vehicle emissions were probably important sources of these high molecular weight isomers. Ambient dibenzo[a,l]pyrene positively correlated with the priority PAH Benzo[g,h,i]perylene. The study indicates that inclusion of non-priority PAHs could be valuable for both PAH source apportionment and health risk assessment.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their nitrated derivatives (NPAHs) attract continuous attention due to their outstanding carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. In order to investigate the diurnal variations, sources, formation mechanism, and health risk assessment of them in heating season, particulate matter (PM) were collected in Beijing urban area from December 26, 2017 to January 17, 2018. PAHs and NPAHs in PM were quantitatively analyzed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) . Average daily concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs were (78 ± 54) ng/m3 and (783 ± 684) pg/m3, respectively. The concentrations of them were significantly higher at nighttime than at daytime, and NPAHs concentrations were 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than PAHs concentrations. In the heating season, the dominant species of PAHs include benzo[b]fluoranthene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and chrysene, while 9-nitroanthracene, 2+3-nitrofluoranthene, and 2-nitropyrene were dominant species for NPAHs. NPAHs were found to have a single peak during heating and to be primarily distributed in the 0.4-0.7 µm particle size. Primary emissions such as biomass burning, coal combustion, and traffic emissions were the major sources of PAHs. NPAHs were produced by the primary source of vehicle emissions and the secondary reaction triggered by OH radicals, as well as biomass burning during daytime. According to the health risk assessment, the total carcinogenic risk was higher in adults than in children. While upon oral ingestion, the carcinogenic risk in children was higher than that of adults, but the risk of adults was higher than children through skin contact and respiratory inhalation.

Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples were collected in the summer and winter of 2015 and 2017 in Xinxiang, China. Nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and three nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) in PM2.5 were detected via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The PAHs concentration in summer and winter decreased from 6.37 ± 1.30 ng/m3 and 96.9 ± 69.9 ng/m3 to 4.89 ± 2.67 ng/m3 and 49.8 ± 43.4 ng/m3 from 2015 to 2017. NPAHs decreased in winter (from 1707 ± 708 pg/m3 to 1192 ± 1113 pg/m3), but increased in summer from 2015 (336 ± 77.2 pg/m3) to 2017 (456 ± 312 pg/m3). Diagnostic ratios of PAHs indicated that petroleum combustion was the main emission source in summer, and pollutants originating from the combustion of petroleum, coal and biomass dominated in winter. The 2-nitrofluoranthene (2-NFR)/2-nitropyrene (2-NP) ratio in this study demonstrated that the OH radical pathway was the main pathway for the formation of 2-NP and 2-NFR. The mean total benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent concentrations (BaPeq) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values decreased from 2013 to 2017. The high value of total BaPeq in the winter of 2017 in Xinxiang revealed that a high-risk of cancer remained for residents. The results of this study demonstrate that the decreases in PAHs and NPAHS concentrations from 2015 to 2017. Combined with reducing gaseous pollutants concentration, the reduction in this study might be attributable to emissions reductions by implementing the air pollution control regulations in Xinxiang city in 2016.

Abstract:PM10 is one of important index to judge the atmosphere environmental quality;and PAHs is the intense cancerogenic organic pollutants,which is mostly adsorbed by matters with diameter smaller than 10 μm.The PM10 samples have been collected by using orientation experiment from two districts-Dachang area and Shanxi road in Nanjing city.The PAHs concentrations in PM10 have been analysed,and it’s temporal and spatial pollution characteristic has been studied.The result shows that the PM10 pollution is serious and it’s concentration changes from 0.115 7 mg·m-3 to 0.391 3 mg·m-3 in Nanjing City.Analysing the 16 kinds’ preferential treatment PAHs in PM10 shows that the annual PAHs concentration between Dachang area and Shanxi road marks no obvious difference,the temporal and spatial variation of PAHs is neither obvious nor regular;Comparing the monthly average concentration between PM10 and PAHs shows that,there is no correlation and regularity between them,which may be caused by the instability of PAHs.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a major group of toxic pollutants in urban areas. We calculated the critical concentrations of PAHs in the urban soils of Nanjing, China based on a human health risk assessment. In the study area, the risk was divided into four levels and toxic equivalent values of benzo[a]pyrene (BaPeq) corresponded to <70ngg-1, 70-700ngg-1, 700-7000ngg-1, and >7000ngg-1. By this standard, most urban areas in Nanjing fall under level II (potentially low risk), while older urban districts, commercial centers, and transportation centers exceed the critical concentration (level III) at present. Additionally, the correlations between PAH concentrations, factors associated with urbanization, and soil properties were analyzed. Population density and black carbon content were determined to be the key factors involved. Multiple linear regression models and the scenario simulation method were used to predict PAH levels in urban soils through 2030. The results indicated that the future distribution characteristics of soil BaPeq under various scenarios were different than at present, but PAH concentrations remained stable only under the low‑carbon scenario. Therefore, the consumption of traditional fossil fuels should be controlled and replaced with alternative energy sources. In addition, the growth of traffic land use should be controlled in the southern and southwestern parts of the urban area.
Pollution characteristics, sources and lung cancer risk of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a new urban district of Nanjing, China

Abstract:This paper focused on the pollution characteristics, sources and lung cancer risk of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a new urban district of Nanjing, China. Gaseous and aerosol PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5μm) samples were collected in spring of 2015. Sixteen PAHs were extracted and analyzed after sampling. Firstly, arithmetic mean concentrations of PAHs and BaPeq (benzo[a]pyrene equivalent) were calculated. The mean concentrations of PAHs were 29.26±14.13, 18.14±5.37 and 48.47±16.03ng/m3 in gas phase, particle phase and both phases, respectively. The mean concentrations of BaPeq were 0.87±0.51, 2.71±2.17 and 4.06±2.31ng/m3 in gas phase, particle phase and both phases, respectively. Secondly, diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis were adopted to identify the sources of PAHs and the outcomes were the same: traffic exhaust was the predominant source followed by fuel combustion and industrial process. Finally, incremental lung cancer risk (ILCR) induced by whole year inhalation exposure to PAHs for population groups of different age and gender were estimated based on a Monte Carlo simulation. ILCR values caused by particle phase PAHs were greater than those caused by gas phase PAHs. ILCR values for adults were greater than those for other age groups. ILCR values caused by total (gas+particle) PAHs for diverse groups were all greater than the significant level (l0-6), indicating high potential lung cancer risk. Sensitivity analysis results showed that cancer slope factor for BaP inhalation exposure and BaPeq concentration had greater impact than body weight and inhalation rate on the ILCR.

Abstract:Identifying the nature and extent of atmospheric PM2.5-bound toxic organic pollutants is beneficial to evaluate human health risks of air pollution. Seasonal observations of PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) were investigated, along with criteria air pollutants and meteorological parameters. With the elevated PM2.5 level, the percentage of 4-ring PAHs and typical NPAH including 3-Nitrobiphenyl (3-NBP) and 2-Nitrofluoranthene (2-NFLT) increased by 19–40%. PM2.5-bound 2-NFLT was positively correlated with O3 and NO2, suggesting the contribution of atmospheric oxidation capacity to enhance the secondary formation of NPAHs in the atmosphere. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis indicated that traffic emissions (44.9–48.7%), coal and biomass combustion (27.6–36.0%) and natural gas and volatilization (15.3–27.5%) were major sources of PAHs, and secondary formation (39.8–53.8%) was a predominant contributor to total NPAH concentrations. Backward trajectory analysis showed that air masses from North China transported to the YRD region increased PAH and NPAH concentrations. Compare to clean days, the BaP equivalent concentrations of total PAHs and NPAHs during haze pollution days were enhanced by 10–25 and 2–6 times, respectively. The Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risks (ILCRs) of PAHs by inhalation exposure also indicated high potential health risks in the YRD region. The results implied that the health risks of PM2.5-bound PAHs and NPAHs could be sharply enhanced with the increase of PM2.5 concentrations.

Abstract:The pollution state and source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmospheric aerosols were studied using GC and GC-MS in different function regions in Nanjing City in summer and winter; and the pollution evaluation of PAHs in different function regions was made. The total amount of PAHs in the aerosols of different function regions of Nanjing City ranged from 19.73 to 497.40ng/m3; and was higher in winter than in summer, with the content of small particles higher than that of large particles. Through some diagnostic index PAHs ratios, the PAHs pollution of each function region in summer might be judged coming mainly from automobile emission (mainly diesel oil); while in winter from automobile emission and coal burning pollution. Adopting benzo(a) pyrene (BaP) and benzo(a) pyrene-equivalent carcinogenic concentration (BaPE) to evaluate the PAHs pollution state in the aerosols of 5 function regions. The air quality was good in summer except that of the main highway was higher than the national air quality standard (BaP, 10ng/m3), and that of small particles in residential region was higher slightly than the regional standard (BaP, 5ng/m3); while the PAHs of each function region in winter were basically in serious excess of standard.

Abstract:The objectives of the present study were to research the chemical composition of PAHs in PM2.5 of road dust, explore potential sources of PAHs, and assess their carcinogenic risk. Fifty-six road dust samples were collected on the arterial and sub-arterial roads at Nanjing Chemical Industry Park during the sampling periods of autumn and winter. A resuspension system in the laboratory was used to simulate the naturally suspended road dust in the environment and collect PM2.5. Ace was not detected, but other PAHs were found. The pollution level of PAHs was 43.66 +/- 15.79 mg kg(-1); and 4-ring PAHs, which accounted for 35.14% of PAHs, were the main pollutants. The contents of BeP and BghiP were the highest, accounting for 12.23% and 12.06% of PAHs, respectively. The PAHs concentrations were found to be higher in winter due to the physicochemical characteristics of PAHs and the meteorological conditions. The sequence of PAHs concentrations was: sub-arterial road in winter > arterial road in winter > arterial road in autumn > sub-arterial road in autumn. Traffic emission and industrial sources led to higher PAHs concentrations on the arterial roads in autumn. Meteorological conditions and road characteristics, such as vehicular speed, frequency of road dust sweeping, and road width, led to higher PAHs concentrations on the sub-arterial roads in winter. Principal component analysis (PCA) and the ratios of Ant/(Ant + Phe), Flu/(Flu + Pyr), InP/(InP + BP), and BaA/(BaA + Chr) were used to distinguish the PAHs sources, which indicated fossil fuel combustion, traffic emissions, and petroleum exhaust as the main PAHs sources. The application of the ILCR model for PAHs in road dust showed a higher carcinogenic risk for children and adults (6.01 x 10(-5) and 5.80 x 10(-5), respectively) on the sub-arterial roads in winter, indicating a high potential carcinogenic risk at the Chemical Industrial Park.

Abstract:A comprehensive campaign had been performed from 2001 to 2002 in five urban sites of Nanjing, a typical mega-city of China, in order to fully understand the state, characteristics and sources of the air pollution. As part of the work, 18 n-alkanes (C15–C32) and 15 PAHs in PM10 and PM2.5 aerosols were chemically characterized in this study by GC and GC/MS. The potential sources of pollutants were reconciled using carbon preference index (CPI) values of n-alkanes and diagnostic ratios of PAHs. Concentrations of the total n-alkanes varied from 53.6 to 733 ng m−3 with mean value of 260 ng m−3 for PM10 and from 39.1 to 709 ng m−3 with mean value of 206 ng m−3 for PM2.5, respectively, while average concentration of the total PAHs was 86.0 ng m−3 for PM10 and 62.6 ng m−3 for PM2.5, respectively. BaP was detected in all samples and at much higher concentrations than in Los Angeles and London. Strongly linear relationship of concentrations of the target compounds between PM10 and PM2.5 was found and indicated that n-alkanes and PAHs are mainly enriched in fine particles. Concentrations of n-alkanes and PAHs presented the highest values at the traffic center, where huge amount of vehicle emissions was the main source of the pollutants. The CPI values and the diagnostic ratios of PAHs further suggested that fossil fuel combustions were the most important source of organic aerosols in the urban area.

Abstract:AbstractIn this study, we examined the sources and temporal variability of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in a typical industrial city in northern China. We also evaluated the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) from the inhalation of these PAHs. Atmospheric PM2.5 samples were collected for 7 consecutive days each month from 2014 to 2019, and the 16 PAHs were measured using multiplex gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. The carcinogenic risk of PAH exposure was assessed using the inhalation unit risk (IUR) and cancer slope factor (CSF) methods. The annual average concentrations of PM2.5 for each year from 2014 to 2019 were 102.87±55.25, 86.92±60.43, 69.17±37.74, 58.20±59.15, 56.01±34.52, and 52.54±58.15 µg m−3, and the annual average ΣPAH concentrations were 56.03±81.09, 47.99±79.30, 40.41±57.31, 33.57±51.79, 43.23±74.80, and 25.20±50.91 ng m−3, respectively. Source identification, using diagnostic ratio analysis, indicated that the major PAH sources were coal/biomass combustion, fuel combustion, and traffic emissions. A health risk assessment showed that the ILCR from PAH inhalation decreased throughout the study period and varied with age. The IUR and CSF methods both showed that the adult ILCR exceeded 1.0×10−6. These findings demonstrate the importance of addressing the carcinogenic risk of PM2.5-bound PAHs, particularly in adults.

Abstract:The sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere of various cities are highly intricate. Conducting research on the pollution characteristics of different types of PAHs in cities will help to focus on solving air pollution problems based on urban characteristics. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the PM 2.5 -bound state and gas-phase were analyzed in the winter atmosphere of Yuncheng and Nanyang, China, to determine their pollution and spatial characteristics. The results revealed that in Yuncheng, the average concentrations of these 16 PAHs were 129.83 ± 96.63 ng m −3 in the PM 2.5 -bound form and 168.05 ± 88.64 ng m −3 in the gas phase, surpassing those observed in Nanyang, where the averages were 66.53 ± 32.49 ng m −3 and 112.80 ± 65.90 ng m −3 for particulate and gas phases, respectively. Gaseous samples primarily contained low molecular weight PAHs, while medium and high molecular weight PAHs were more prevalent in particulate samples. The linear relationship between the gas-particle partition coefficient (logK P ) and the gas partition coefficient ( PL0 ) and K OA value of PAHs in both cities suggested that during winter, PAHs in Yuncheng and Nanyang predominantly adsorb onto particles, failing to achieve gas-particle equilibrium. Source analysis using positive matrix factorization (PMF) identified coal combustion (26.4%–41.9%), biomass combustion (26.3%–29.6%), motor vehicle emissions (16.3%–30.4%), and evaporation sources (15.8%–26.9%) as the primary sources of atmospheric PAHs in both cities. Potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analyses indicated that pollutants originating from the northwest direction and near-earth air masses exerted a substantial influence on both cities. According to health risk assessments, both Yuncheng City and Nanyang City exhibited a certain risk of cancer due to atmospheric PAH exposure. However, the risk of cancer was higher in Yuncheng City compared to Nanyang City. The research results uncover the pollution characteristics and primary sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different types of urban air. It emphasizes the substantial contribution of local pollution sources to atmospheric PAHs and emphasizes the necessity of prioritizing control measures.

Abstract:Ambient air samples were collected at two different locations between 2011 and 2012 in Zhengzhou, China in order to assess the concentration level, health risks, as well as the sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in particulate matter (PM2.5). The mean annual levels of PM2.5 observed at industry site and residential site were 172 ± 121 and 160 ± 72 μg m−3, respectively, which were about five times the annual value of proposed PM2.5 standard (35 μg m−3) in China. The PM2.5 in all daily samples (n = 47) exceeds the proposed PM2.5 standard in China (75 μg m−3) at both industrial and residential sites. Seasonal variations of PM2.5 showed a clear trend of winter > autumn > spring > summer at both sites. The total concentrations of 16 PM2.5-associated PAHs ranged from 61 ± 51 to 431 ± 281 and 38 ± 25 to 254 ± 189 ng m−3, with mean value of 176 ± 233 and 111 ± 146 ng m−3 at industry and residential sites, respectively. The major species were fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene and benzo[k]fluoranthene, and the concentration levels of PAHs in PM2.5 were higher in winter than those of other seasons at both sites. The annual mean values of toxicity equivalency concentrations of ∑16PAHs in PM2.5 were 22.8 and 13.5 ng m−3 in industry and residential area, respectively. In this study, the risk level of adult citizens through inhalation exposure to PAHs was calculated. The average estimates of lifetime inhalation cancer risks were approximately 8.9 × 10−7 and 6.3 × 10−7 for industry and residential sites, respectively. The main sources of 16 PAHs from both diagnostic ratios and principle component analysis identified as vehicular emissions and coal combustion.

Abstract:This study concentrated on the pollution level, sources, and lung cancer risk of PM10-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in summer in Nanjing, China. PM10 samples were collected in summer of the year 2015 in Nanjing. 16 USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) priority PAHs were extracted and analyzed after sampling. The mean concentrations of PAHs and BaPeq were 7.49±2.60 and 1.21±0.24 ng/m3, respectively, being in a middle level among results from regions worldwide. According to the results of diagnostic ratios, PAHs originated mainly from traffic exhaust, especially diesel vehicle emissions. Owing to the inhalation exposure, the median values of incremental lung cancer risk (ILCR) were estimated to be 3.36×10-8, 2.50×10-8, 1.69×10-7, 2.54×10-8, 1.38×10-7, 1.18×10-7, 1.27×10-7, and 1.11×10-7 for boys, male adolescents, male adults, male seniors, girls, female adolescents, female adults, and female seniors, respectively, indicating low potential lung cancer risk.
