Abstract:Three dimensional images having continuous horizontal parallax were developed by wavelength enconding of view followed by a natural decoding process of projection onto a diffractive screen. It allows for the direct criation of "holoimages" by using projected images of a real object substituting holographic images for some applications in the visual aarts. It also allows for the enlargement of holograms performing simultaneously its conversion to the white light observation. White light is employed in this process, since laser light is only necessary for constructing the diffractive components.

Abstract:Holographic display has attracted considerable attention for its high-contrast, low power consumption, wide color gamut and potentials for three-dimensional (3D) display. Although computer-generated hologram (CGH) has the potential for reconstructing all the 3D information of an object, complicated 3D modeling and time-consuming computation are big challenges faced by current 3D holographic display. A simple yet effective method to realize holographic 3D display by shifted Fraunhofer diffraction has been presented in this paper. After a 3D object is divided into a set of layers in axial direction, these layers are calculated into corresponding sub-holograms by Fraunhofer diffraction. The hologram uploaded on SLM consists of sub-holograms in a tiling approach. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of shifted Fraunhofer diffraction. Detailed analysis of computational cost has also been carried out, and the comparison between shifted Fresnel diffraction and shifted Fraunhofer diffraction in the proposed method has been analyzed. The Analysis results shows that the process of 3D modeling is simple, that is the computational complexity is accordingly reduced compared with shifted Fraunhofer diffraction. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can reconstruct multi-plane 3D object with continuous depth map. It is expected that the proposed method may provide a better solution in future holographic 3D display research.

Abstract:A pseudoscopic (inverted depth) image made with spiral diffracting elements intermediated by a pinhole is explained by its symmetry properties. The whole process is made under common white light illumination and allows the projection of images. The analysis of this projection demonstrates that the images of two objects pointing away longitudinally have the main features of standard pseudoscopic image points. An orthoscopic (normal depth) image has also been obtained with the breaking of the symmetry conditions.

Abstract:In this paper. a method is proposed to implement noises reduced three-dimensional (3D) holographic near-eye display by phase-only computer-generated hologram (CGH). The CGH is calculated from a double-convergence light Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, in which the phases of two virtual convergence lights are introduced into GS algorithm simultaneously. The first phase of convergence light is a replacement of random phase as the iterative initial value and the second phase of convergence light will modulate the phase distribution calculated by GS algorithm. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The results indicate that this method can effectively reduce the noises in the reconstruction. Field of view (FOV) of the reconstructed image reaches 40 degrees and experimental light path in the 4-f system is shortened. As for 3D experiments, the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can present 3D images with 180cm zooming range and continuous depth cues. Abstract:We present two simple yet effective methods to realize holographic three-dimensional (3D) display by partitioned Fresnel diffraction (PFreD) and partitioned Fraunhofer diffraction (PFraD). After a 3D object is divided into a set of layers in axial direction, these layers are calculated into corresponding sub-holograms. These two methods are used to develop a tiling approach to hologram construction and reconstruction. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed methods. The similarities and differences between PFreD and PFraD are analyzed in details for better understanding. These two methods may provide promising solutions in future holographic 3D realization with their own characteristics and scope of application.
Enlarging Holograms Under White Light, a Way to Save Holographic Material

Abstract:We developed techniques for employing holographic screens under white light, first exhibited to the public in 1989 (3) (4) which demonstrated the possibility of enlarging holograms already in 1990 (5). Fig. 1 shows how we encode views in a first step. The plane of the figure is horizontal, and a thin vertical slit is necessary to project each different view of the scene at a different sequential wavelength value. Decoding happens because the projected views are naturally angularly redistributed by the holographic screen (6).

Abstract:Since the diffraction angle is limited by the spatial resolution of the spatial light modulator (SLM), the size of the optical image of the lensless holographic projection with a SLM is very small. Using a divergent spherical beam to illuminate a SLM is an effective method to physically increase the projection angle; nevertheless, the sampling ranges of the existing Fresnel diffraction algorithms with fast Fourier transform keep unchanged. In this paper, a double-sampling Fresnel diffraction algorithm to enlarge the sampling range is proposed when using a divergent spherical beam to illuminate a SLM, and the magnification of the optical image is realized in lensless holographic projection. The hologram can be easily optimized by the Gerschberg-Saxton algorithm. Simulation and experimental results with enlarged optical image are presented successfully.

Abstract:AbstractA novel 3D display approach and system based on spliced images is proposed, which consists of an array of mini‐projectors and a vertical diffuser. We made a prototype‐equipment using 49 mini‐ projectors and a vertical diffuser to demonstrate this method. A 23‐inch LCD screen with the resolution of 1920*1080 and 49 Fresnel lens were used to make the mini‐projector array. This device can display a 3D image with 49 horizontal viewpoints and a small angle pitch of 0.51 °. The 3D images displayed by our approach can be observed at different horizontal and vertical viewpoints without fatigue. The observers will get depth perception from binocular parallax, horizontal motion parallax and vertical motion parallax.
White Light Colour Photography for Rendering Holoimages in a Diffractive Screen

Abstract:The capability of color encoding the continuous sequence of views from a scene was demonstrated previously by the author (1990). In the present work, the scheme for this process is shown where white light from a black and white object is diffracted at a diffraction grating and then photographed on colour film. Two rays of different wavelengths reaching the plane of the color photographic film determine the stereo representation of an object point. Since the wavelength may have any value within the continuous visible spectrum, this case constitutes a new situation of continuous stereo photography. A natural process of decoding is represented where a diffusing white light source was added from the side of the developed photographic film. One white light ray that matches the former position of an incident ray receives the spectral characteristics of the registered point when traversing the photographic slide. It characterizes a situation of light path reversal, and the ideal result corresponds to a projected white light point being focused at the original object position. This situation generates a pseudoscopic image of the object, as seen from a certain distance, whose colour depends on the horizontal position of the observer.

Abstract:A digital micro-mirror device (DMD) acting as a real-time hologram is an emerging technology in dynamic holographic projection. This paper presents a lensless image magnification method in DMD holography by using a Fresnel hologram. By analyzing the diffraction order distribution in the image plane of a hologram produced by DMD, we find the factors that limit the size of the magnified image. We perform a lensless magnification experiment that shows good magnified images in accordance with the numerical results. Finally, we discuss methods to eliminate longitudinal error and chromatic aberration in three-dimensional (3-D) and color projection, respectively, and present a 3-D image reconstruction result that shows lensless magnification of a 3-D image without distortion. It is believed that this technique can be used in future real-time holographic projection based on digital light processing technology. Abstract:The field of view (FOV) of holographic retinal projection display (RPD) is always restricted by the diffraction angle of a spatial light modulator (SLM). In this paper, we demonstrate a large FOV holographic RPD by using two-step Fresnel diffraction calculation. By adding the pupil plane as the intermediate plane and decreasing the sampling interval, the FOV can be enlarged to nearly two times of the diffraction angle limit without any physical change. Due to the added spherical wave phase, the influence of aliasing is eliminated because the adjacent orders are projected to different viewpoints. The nonuniform image intensity caused by the sinc function modulation is compensated by image pre-processing. Optical experiments verify that the proposed method can present a uniform holographic near-eye display with a large FOV and adjustable viewpoint position.

Abstract:We propose a holographic 3D display system which can produce images with adjustable viewing parameters and eliminated zero-order interruption. The 3D scene is generated from a 3D CAD tool, and point source algorithm is used to generate the holograms. A two-step model is introduced in the computing to generate precise Fourier holograms. A phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) is used in the optical reconstruction, which can replay clear images for 3D diffusive objects. During optical reconstructing, the viewing angle and image size of the system can be adjusted by changing the parameters of the replay lens. A filter is introduced in the replay system to eliminate the zero-order interruption and increase the 3D image quality. Optical experiments are performed, and the results show that our proposed holographic display system can produce noiseless 3D image reconstructions.

Abstract:We propose a three-dimensional (3-D) holographic display system which consists of a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) and a modified 4-f system. The 3-D scene is generated from OpenGL, and the point source algorithm with anti-aliasing technique is used to generate the Fresnel hologram. A modified 4-f system is proposed to produce distortion-free magnification of the 3-D image and eliminate the zero-order interruption of the 3-D holographic imaging system. This method can make efficient utilization of the space-bandwidth product of the SLM, which promises the image quality and keeps the 3-D imaging zone unchanged. Numerical simulations and optical experiments are performed, and the results show that our proposed method can reconstruct enlarged 3-D optical image with correct magnification factor and low image noise. Abstract:Holographic retinal projection display (RPD) can project images directly onto the retina without any lens by encoding a convergent spherical wave phase with the target images. Conventional amplitude-type holographic RPD suffers from strong zero-order light and conjugate. In this paper, a lensless phase-only holographic RPD based on error diffusion algorithm is demonstrated. It is found that direct error diffusion of the complex Fresnel hologram leads to low image quality. Thus, a post-addition phase method is proposed based on angular spectrum diffraction. The spherical wave phase is multiplied after error diffusion process, and acts as an imaging lens. In this way, the error diffusion functions better due to reduced phase difference between adjacent pixels, and a virtual image with improved quality is produced. The viewpoint is easily deflected just by changing the post-added spherical phase. A full-color holographic RPD with adjustable eyebox is demonstrated experimentally with time-multiplexing technique.

Abstract:This work presents the optical reconstruction of computer-generated holograms (CGHs) 3D scenes via spatial light modulators (SLMs). Holography is an optical technique that allows the recording and reconstruction of images of 3D objects, as a hologram carries the intensity and phase information about the object. With the evolution of data storage and processing in computers, the viability of generating holograms by computers has increased. Currently the experimental implementation of CGHs (Computer-Generated Holograms) is done through new optoelectronic devices such as SLMs (Spatial Light Modulators) and high-resolution CCDs cameras, in addition to new photosensitive materials, allowing the optical recording and reconstruction of 3D images and special optical beams. Therefore, presented here with good results are CGHs numerical construction (recording) of images both static and dynamic, 2D and 3D, and its reconstruction (reproduction) using optical SLMs devices to obtain 3D images and static and dynamic scenes.

Abstract:A non-mechanical scanning method based on a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) is proposed to increase the viewing angle of electronic holographic three-dimensional (3D) displays. A scanning off-axis Fresnel lens is simulated by the LC-SLM to deflect the reconstructed light beam. Using the time-division multiplexing method, the viewing zones are sequentially projected to different positions. When the eyes of the observer are located at the viewing zones, the reconstructed 3D images can be observed. Abstract:We show a system capable of projecting a video scene on a white-light holographic screen to obtain a kind of image that results in a plane in front of the screen. This holographic screen is mainly a diffractive lens and it is constructed by holography. The image plane can be located at any azimuth angle and seen with continuous parallax and without the use of goggles or any special visualization equipment. The image is not volumetric but when the plane is oblique to the observer its appearance looks very close to a real volumetric image.

Abstract:Holographic three-dimensional (3D) displays can reconstruct a whole wavefront of a 3D scene and provide rich depth information for the human eyes. Computer-generated holographic techniques offer an efficient way for reconstructing holograms without complicated interference recording systems. In this work, we present a technique for generating 3D computer-generated holograms (CGHs) with scalable samplings, by using layer-based diffraction calculations. The 3D scene is partitioned into multiple layers according to its depth image. Shifted Fresnel diffraction is used for calculating the wave diffractions from the partitioned layers to the CGH plane with adjustable sampling rates, while maintaining the depth information. The algorithm provides an effective method for scaling 3D CGHs without an optical zoom module in the holographic display system. Experiments have been performed, demonstrating that the proposed method can reconstruct quality 3D images at different scale factors.

Abstract:Electro-holography has the problem of having a narrow visual field angle, because the resolution of a spatial light modulator is insufficient for displaying a fringe pattern. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a projector-type electro-holographic compact display that achieves a wide visual field angle by using the combination of an optical system and calculation algorithms. The results of experiments show that the visual field angle is three times larger than that of a normal electro-holographic display. In addition, it is demonstrated that the system has the ability to display 3D reconstructed images with binocular, full-color, high-resolution, and accurate depth presentation.
