Abstract:Solid-state electrolytes are actively sought for their potential application in energy storage devices, especially lithium metal rechargeable batteries. However, one of the key challenges toward the solid-state electrolytes is their lower ionic conductivity compared with the liquid electrolytes (10-2 S cm-1 at room temperature), where a large gap still exists. Therefore, the pursuit of high ionic conductivity equal to the liquid electrolyte remains the main objective for the design of the solid-state electrolytes. Here, we show a series of high-charge-density polymerized ionic networks (PINs) as solid-state electrolytes that take inspiration from poly(ionic liquid)s. The obtained quasi-solid electrolyte slice displays astonishingly high ionic conductivity, 5.89×10-3 S cm-1 at 25 oC (the highest conductivity among the state-of-art polymer gel electrolytes and polymer solid electrolytes) and ultra-high decomposition potential, more than 5.2 V vs. Li/Li+, which are attributed to the continuous ion-transport channel formed by ultra-high ion density and enhanced chemical stability endowed by highly cross-linked networks. The Li/LiFePO4 and Li/LiCoO2 batteries (3.0~4.4V) assembled with the solid electrolytes show high stable capacity of around 155 mAh g-1 and 130 mAh g-1. In principle, our work breaks a new path for the design and fabrication of the solid-state electrolytes in various energy conversion devices.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical cells based on alkali metal anodes are receiving intensive scientific interest as potentially transformative technology platforms for electrical energy storage. Chemical, morphological, mechanical and hydrodynamic instabilities at the metal anode produce uneven metal electrodeposition and poor anode reversibility, which, are among the many known challenges that limit progress. Here, we report that solid-state electrolytes based on crosslinked polymer networks can address all of these challenges in cells based on lithium metal anodes. By means of transport and electrochemical analyses, we show that manipulating thermodynamic interactions between polymer segments covalently anchored in the network and “free” segments belonging to an oligomeric electrolyte hosted in the network pores, one can facilely create hybrid electrolytes that simultaneously exhibit liquid-like barriers to ion transport and solid-like resistance to morphological and hydrodynamic instability.

Abstract:Polymerized ionic networks (PINs) with six ion pairs per repeating unit are synthesized by nucleophilic-substitution-mediated polymerization or radical polymerization of monomers bearing six 1-vinylimidazolium cations. PIN-based solid-like electrolytes show good ionic conductivities (up to 5.32 × 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 22°C), wide electrochemical stability windows (up to 5.6 V), and good interfacial compatibility with the electrodes.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries overwhelm the lithium-ion batteries by harvesting high energy from Li metal anode with ultrahigh capacities and gaining excellent safety from solid electrolytes. However, the uncontrollable solvents in solid electrolytes usually aggravate poor interfacial contact with lithium metal anode and deteriorate Li + pathways. Here a copolymeric network-structured ion conductor by rationally integrating cellulose nanofibril as a two-in-one functional material is employed to anchor the solvent. Taking advantages of tightly anchoring of cellulose nanofibril to solvent, the as-constructed quasi-solid polymer-based electrolyte offers rapid Li + transport channels and realizes effective Li-dendrite suppression, which enables high ionic conductivity of 1.93 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at room temperature, long-term Li plating/stripping over 1900 h, and high capacity retention of 99%. This work provides a fresh strategy for creating solid electrolytes that meet both high ionic conductivity and interfacial stability requirements for practical solid-state lithium metal battery.

Abstract:Solid-state polymer electrolyte with high ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability is desirable for lithium metal batteries. A poly(ionic liquid)-polyethylene oxide semi-interpenetrating polymer network composite solid electrolyte for safe lithium metal batteries is designed to satisfy the demand of ionic conductivity, safety and electrochemical stability. This composite solid electrolyte is fabricated via polymerizing 1-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (ionic liquid monomer) in polyethylene oxide matrix by one-step method. Differential scanning calorimetry results reveal that the crystallinity of composite solid electrolyte reduce to 15.5% comparing with polyethylene oxide solid electrolyte owing to the confinement of poly(ionic liquid) interpenetrating network. The semi-interpenetrating polymer network structure simultaneously endow the composite solid electrolyte with high ionic conductivity (6.12 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 55 degrees C) and wide electrochemical window (5.44 V vs. Li/Li+) and thermal decomposition temperature (280 degrees C). In order to verify the favorable electrochemical performance of composite solid electrolyte, we assemble the cells with LiFePO4/Li using the electrolyte. The reversible capacity of LiFePO4 is 147 mAh g(-1) with high Coulombic efficiency (up to 99%) at the 0.2 C rate and 55 degrees C.

Abstract:Lithium‐ion batteries have remained a state‐of‐the‐art electrochemical energy storage technology for decades now, but their energy densities are limited by electrode materials and conventional liquid electrolytes can pose significant safety concerns. Lithium metal batteries featuring Li metal anodes, solid polymer electrolytes, and high‐voltage cathodes represent promising candidates for next‐generation devices exhibiting improved power and safety, but such solid polymer electrolytes generally do not exhibit the required excellent electrochemical properties and thermal stability in tandem. Here, an interpenetrating network polymer with weakly coordinating anion nodes that functions as a high‐performing single‐ion conducting electrolyte in the presence of minimal plasticizer, with a wide electrochemical stability window, a high room‐temperature conductivity of 1.5 × 10−4 S cm−1, and exceptional selectivity for Li‐ion conduction (tLi+ = 0.95) is reported. Importantly, this material is also flame retardant and highly stable in contact with lithium metal. Significantly, a lithium metal battery prototype containing this quasi‐solid electrolyte is shown to outperform a conventional battery featuring a polymer electrolyte.

The ion‐dipole‐reinforced solid electrolyte yields sustainable Li stripping/platting and interfacial stability, thus enabling high cycle stability and capacity retention in NCM811|Li solid‐state cells.

Abstract:It is revealed that the application of commercial liquid organic electrolytes encountered increasing safety hazards to achieve higher energy density. The replace of solid electrolytes could eliminate most safety issues induced by liquid electrolytes. However, both solo polymer electrolyte and inorganic electrolyte have difficulty to simultaneously acquire high ionic conductivity and good interfacial compatibility. At this circumstance, in-situ polymerization is developed to construct a compatible interface with high ionic conductivity and improved safety performances. In this review, recent advances of newly designed electrolyte are summarized and discussed. It is realized that the polymerization conversion of monomer and construction of 3D inorganic structure are the factors deserve consideration for high security and energy density. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are outlined to foresee the development of in-situ polymerized electrolytes.

Abstract:Polycarbonate-based polymer electrolytes possess superior ionic conductivity at room temperature, higher lithium ion transference number and wider electrochemical stability window when compared with conventional poly(ethylene oxide)-based polymer electrolytes. Herein, the poly(diethylene glycol carbonate) dimethacrylate macromonomer (PDEC-DMA) was synthesized and the resultant interpenetrating network IPN-PDEC polymer electrolyte was developed via free radical in situ polymerization for polymer electrolyte Li metal batteries. This IPN-PDEC polymer electrolyte exhibited a decent ionic conductivity of 1.64 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature and a wide electrochemical stability window (up to 4.5 V vs. Li+/Li). The LiFePO4/IPN-PDEC/Li and LiFe0.2Mn0.8PO4/IPN-PDEC/Li cells delivered excellent rate capability and cycling performance at room temperature. An all solid state lithium battery was also demonstrated by applying the as-prepared solid polymer electrolyte (SPE-PDEC) at a temperature of 100 °C, which displayed a superior cycling performance. Therefore, the IPN-PDEC network is a promising polymer electrolyte for solid state lithium batteries.
Enhanced Ionic Conductivity and Interface Stability of Hybrid Solid-State Polymer Electrolyte for Rechargeable Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Compared to conventional organic liquid electrolyte, solid-state polymer electrolytes are extensively considered as an alternative candidate for next generation high-energy batteries because of their high safety, non-leakage and electrochemical stability with the metallic lithium (Li) anode. However, solid-state polymer electrolytes generally show low ionic conductivity and high interfacial impedance to electrodes. Here we report a hybrid solid-state electrolyte, presenting an ultra-high ionic conductivity of 3.27 mS cm(-1) at room temperature, a wide electrochemical stability window of 4.9 V, and non-flammability. This electrolyte consists of a polymer blend matrix (polyethylene oxide and poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)), Li+ conductive ceramic filler (Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)(3)) and a solvate ionic liquid (LiFSI in tetra ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, 1:1 in molar ratio) as plasticizer. The introduction of the solvate ionic liquid to the solid-state electrolyte not only improves its ionic conductivity but also remarkably enhances the stability of the interface with Li anode. When applied in Li metal batteries, a Li vertical bar Li symmetric cell can operate stably over 800 h with a minimal polarization of 25 mV and a full Li vertical bar LiFePO4 cell delivers a high specific capacity of 158 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at room temperature.

Abstract:The solid-state lithium-ion battery is proposed as the ultimate form of battery and has rapidly become an updated attentive research field due to its high safety and extreme temperature tolerance. However, current solid-state electrolytes hardly meet the requirement in practical applications due to its low ionic conductivity, weak mechanical properties, and poor interfacial contact between the electrolyte and the electrode. In this work, we developed a double-network-supported poly(ionic liquid)-based ionogel electrolyte (DN-Ionogel) via a one-step method. Due to its compact cross-linking structure, the leakage-free DN-Ionogel electrolyte exhibits outstanding flexibility and favorable mechanical properties. In this ionogel electrolyte, the double network favors dissociation of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfony)imide (LiTFSI), further resulting in remarkable ionic conductivity (1.8 x 10(-3) S/cm, room temperature), wide electrochemical window (up to 5.0 V), and high lithium-ion transference number (0.33). Furthermore, the cell (LiFePO4 parallel to DN-Ionogel parallel to Lithium) delivers a discharge capacity as high as 150.5 mAh/g, stable cyclic performance (over 200 cycles), and superior rate behavior.

Abstract:The solid‐state electrolytes are keys to achieve high energy, safety and stability for lithium ion batteries. In this review, core indicators of solid polymer electrolytes are discussed in detail including ionic conductivity, interface compatibility, mechanical integrity and cycling stability. Besides, we have also summarized how above properties can be improved by the design strategy of functional monomers, groups and assembly of batteries. Structures and properties of polymers are investigated here to provide a basis for all‐solid‐state electrolyte design strategies of multi‐component polymers. Meanwhile, adjustment strategies of quasi‐solid‐state polymer electrolytes such as adding functional additives and carrying out structural design have also been investigated, aiming at solving problems caused by simply adding liquids or small molecular plasticizer. We hope that fresh and established researchers can achieve a general perspective of solid polymer electrolytes via this review, and spur more extensive interests for exploration of high‐performance lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:High-voltage electrode materials are beneficial for developing high-power-density lithium-ion batteries. The anodic voltage stability of electrolytes is a major challenge for high-voltage lithium batteries. Herein, a polysiloxane-based solid polymer electrolyte is fabricated by grafting ionic liquid and poly(ethylene oxide) chains onto flexible polysiloxane backbone. An ionic liquid with a strong electron-withdrawing nitrile group and a positively charged imidazole possesses good resistance against anodic oxidation, which endows the solid polymer electrolyte with a wide electrochemical window. The electrolyte integrates advantages of ionic liquid and poly(ethylene oxide) exhibiting a high ionic conductivity (3.56 × 10–4 S cm–1 at room temperature) and excellent resistance to dendrite growth. In addition, both Li/LiFePO4 and high-voltage Li/LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cells with the as-prepared solid polymer electrolyte show excellent cycling performance and superior rate capability at 30 °C. Thus, the modified polysiloxane-based electrolyte is a promising electrolyte candidate for next-generation high-energy-density batteries.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries are promising candidates for improving battery safety and boosting energy density. However, the application of both typical solid-state electrolytes, inorganic ceramic/glass and organic polymer electrolytes, are facing their respective inherent challenges, including large interfacial resistance and unwanted interfacial reactions of inorganic electrolytes, and narrow electrochemical stability windows of polymer electrolytes. The design of multi-layer solid-state electrolytes, such as inorganic/inorganic, inorganic/polymer and polymer/polymer structures, provides a viable solution to these issues by effectively improving the interfacial stability and widening the electrochemical window, which exhibits unparallel advantages in solid-state batteries with the help of non-diffusible characteristic of solid-state electrolytes. Given the extensive research and progress reported, this paper reviews the latest advancements in multi-layer solid-state electrolytes and categorizes them into inorganic-based, polymer-based and composite-based systems. Each is discussed separately, focusing on their design rationales, functional mechanisms, electrochemical performances, and residual challenges. In addition, to meet the requirements of practical applications, the potential strategies for further development of multi-layer solid-state electrolytes are also briefly presented.
A Rational Design of Solid Polymer Electrolyte with High Salt Concentration for Lithium Battery

Abstract:With the development of electrical energy storage and electrical vehicle, high safety is indispensable for lithium ion battery, therefore, high performance solid polymer electrolytes are the relentless pursuit of numerous researches. However, low ionic conductivity restricts the polymer electrolyte usage in commercialized lithium ion batteries. Among the candidates of polymer electrolytes, poly (ethylene carbonate) is promising due to its ability of high lithium salt dissociation. Nonetheless, these polymer electrolytes with high concentration salt always accompanies with an obvious deterioration of mechanical properties. Herein, via controlling the ratio of poly (ethylene carbonate) and poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene), a biphasic solid polymer electrolyte possessing high concentration lithium salt phase and good mechanical strength is prepared. Specifically, considering the role of polymer groups in lithium ion transport, it is speculated that dual-path of Li+ transport forms in the polymer electrolyte, which improves the conductivity remarkably. The prepared electrolyte realizes sufficient ionic conductivity (1.08 x 10(-4) S/cm) at 30 degrees C, with a wide electrochemical window about 4.5 V (vs. Li+/Li), meanwhile exhibits the capacity of 'suppression to lithium dendrite growth. Notably, with the polymer electrolyte, Li/LiFePO4 cell exhibits superior rate capacity and excellent cycling stability. This study proves new insights for polymer electrolyte design with high conductivity.
Accelerated ion transportation in liquid crystalline polymer networks for superior solid-state lithium metal batteries

Abstract:The application of solid polymer electrolyte in high energy density lithium metal batteries is limited by low Li + mobility, low ionic conductivity and poor cycle stability at room temperature. In the study, the free-standing flexible polymeric electrolytes (PCREs) with semi-interpenetrating-network in the topological nanostructures were fabricated through the in-situ UV-photopolymerization of the liquid crystalline monomers and poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether. Remarkably, by optimizing the relative proportion of the two liquid crystalline monomers with different methylene chains as connected bridge band between rigid center and terminal acrylate functional groups, the electrochemical properties of the prepared PCREs were successfully improved, which might contributed to the suitable ion transport channels in the porous polymer network structures. The prepared PCRE exhibited increased ion migration number, excellent ionic conductivity and a wide electrochemical window. Through the calculation of density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation, the difference in the molecular orbital of liquid crystalline polymers and the mechanism of PCREs enhancement t Li+ were well understood. The study may provide new perspectives for the design and fabrication of high-performance polymer electrolyte materials, which will promote the development and practical application of the all-solid lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The development of the solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) can effectively address the hidden safety issues of commercially used liquid electrolytes. Nevertheless, the unsatisfactory room temperature ion conductivity and inferior mechanical strength for linear PEO-based SPEs are still the immense obstacles impeding the further applications of SPEs for large-scale commercialization. Herein, we fabricate a series of semi-interpenetrating-network (semi-IPN) polymer electrolytes based on a novel liquid crystal (C6M LC) and poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) via UV-irradiation at the first time. The LCs not only highly improve the mechanical properties of electrolyte membranes via the construction of network structure with PEGDE, but also create stable ion transport channels for ion conduction. As a result, a free-standing flexible SPE shows outstanding ionic conductivity (5.93 × 10−5 S cm−1 at 30 °C), a very wide electrochemical stability window of 5.5 V, and excellent thermal stability at thermal decomposition temperatures above 360 °C as well as the capacity of suppressing lithium dendrite growth. Moreover, the LiFePO4/Li battery assembled with the semi-IPN electrolyte membranes exhibits good cycle performance and admirable reversible specific capacity. This work highlights the obvious advantages of LCs applied to the electrolyte for the advanced solid lithium battery.

Abstract:The polymer electrolyte based solid-state lithium metal batteries are the promising candidate for the high-energy electrochemical energy storage with high safety and stability. Moreover, the intrinsic properties of polymer electrolytes and interface contact between electrolyte and electrodes have played critical roles for determining the comprehensive performances of solid-state lithium metal batteries. In this review, the development of polymer electrolytes with the design strategies by functional units adjustments are firstly discussed. Then the interfaces between polymer electrolyte and cathode/anode, including the interface issues, remedy strategies for stabilizing the interface contact and reducing resistances, and the in-situ polymerization method for enhancing the compatibilities and assembling the batteries with favorable performances, have been introduced. Lastly, the perspectives on developing polymer electrolytes by functional units adjustment, and improving interface contact and stability by effective strategies for solid-state lithium metal batteries have been provided.

Simultaneous High Ionic Conductivity and Lithium‐Ion Transference Number in Single‐Ion Conductor Network Polymer Enabling Fast‐Charging Solid‐State Lithium Battery

Abstract:A network‐structured polymer electrolyte with simultaneous enhancement of ionic conductivity and lithium‐ion transference number is proposed as a positive strategy to boost fast ion transport and limit anion migration for kinetically propelling its lithium‐ion transport. These structural advantages with a synergistic effect obviously ameliorate the high‐rate cycling performance and fast‐charging capability of solid‐state lithium batteries. Developing solid‐state electrolyte with sufficient ionic conduction and flexible‐intimate interface is vital to advance fast‐charging solid‐state lithium batteries. Solid polymer electrolyte yields the promise of interfacial compatibility, yet its critical bottleneck is how to simultaneously achieve high ionic conductivity and lithium‐ion transference number. Herein, single‐ion conducting network polymer electrolyte (SICNP) enabling fast charging is proposed to positively realize fast lithium‐ion locomotion with both high ionic conductivity of 1.1 × 10−3 S cm−1 and lithium‐ion transference number of 0.92 at room temperature. Experimental characterization and theoretical simulations demonstrate that the construction of polymer network structure for single‐ion conductor not only facilitates fast hopping of lithium ions for boosting ionic kinetics, but also enables a high dissociation level of the negative charge for lithium‐ion transference number close to unity. As a result, the solid‐state lithium batteries constructed by coupling SICNP with lithium anodes and various cathodes (e.g., LiFePO4, sulfur, and LiCoO2) display impressive high‐rate cycling performance (e.g., 95% capacity retention at 5 C for 1000 cycles in LiFePO4|SICNP|lithium cell) and fast‐charging capability (e.g., being charged within 6 min and discharged over than 180 min in LiCoO2|SICNP|lithium cell). Our study provides a prospective direction for solid‐state electrolyte that meets the lithium‐ion dynamics for practical fast‐charging solid‐state lithium batteries.

Abstract:As the state-of-the-art energy storage technology, lithium-ion batteries have been attracting lots of attention, but their finite energy densities cannot satisfy the overwhelming demand for large energy storage and commercial flammable liquid electrolytes are also plagued by safety concerns. Solvent-free single-ion polymer electrolytes with excellent electrochemical properties are expected to solve these issues and enhance the energy density of the next-generation batteries technology. Here, we engineered the networking of a series of solvent-free anionic network polymer electrolytes to improve ionic transport for Li-metal battery applications. The anionic network polymers formed as a diamondoid structure consisting of borate anions bridged by branched ethylene glycol linkers of differing stoichiometric ratios, enabling the controlled segmental mobility of network polymers. The increasing segmental mobility offered an elevated ionic conductivity, revealing ionic transport was mostly controlled by engineering the segmental mobilities of polymers, especially at the given interanionic distance. However, there was a restricted ionic transport in fast segmental dynamics of the network polymers featuring free branches, implying that the branching would less contribute to ionic transport compared to the interanionic distance likely due to the frustration in changing the coordination site. Standout network polymer exhibited notable ion selectivity in Li+ cation transport and high oxidative stability. Galvanostatic cycling reveals outstanding resistance to dendrite growth, suggesting that the solvent-free network polymer can serve as a powerful electrolyte for Li-metal batteries.
