Abstract:Complementary electrochromic devices were fabricated by using tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) film as working electrode, Prussian blue (PB) film as counter electrode and 0.1 M lithium perchlorate in propylene carbonate as electrolyte. The XRD result presents that WO 3 and PB films are amorphous, which is favourable for a fast ion intercalation-deintercalation process. The device was tested under potentiostatic control using ±1.3 V steps, and changed its color between blue and colorless. It has a fast-switching respond (about 1.5 s for colouring and 2 s for bleaching) and could withstand 100,000 cycles with little change in its optical contrast.
Fast-switching Quasi-Solid State Electrochromic Full Device Based on Mesoporous WO3 and NiO Thin Films

Abstract:Mesoporous tungsten trioxide (WO3) and nickel oxide (NiO) electrochromic (EC) thin films have been fabricated by sol-gel method with assistant of tri-block copolymer [PEO132PEO50PEO132] (F108). By controlling weight ratio of F108 and calcination temperatures, uniform and transparent mesoporous films are fabricated. Both WO3 and NiO films are comprised by nanoparticles with diameters of ca.10 nm, mesopores with pore size of approximately 6 nm are distributed in the films. The thickness of the films are ca. 400 nm. The as-prepared films have ultra-fast switching time during EC redox reactions. Applied with positive and negative voltages of 40 s respectively, the coloration/bleaching time of WO3 and NiO films are 5.7 s/2.3 s and 0.9 s/3.8 s, which is faster than that of comparative EC films fabricated by sol-gel method without F108 (coloration/bleaching time of WO3 and NiO films are 17.5 s/14.5 s and 13.6 s/4.9 s) and EC films fabricated by magnetron sputtering method (coloration/bleaching time of WO3 and NiO films are 29.4 s/21.3 s and 9.6 s/7.5 s). Quasi-solid state electrochromic device assembled with mesoporous WO3 and NiO thin films has excellent EC performance, such as fast switching speed (3.2/1.1 s for coloration/bleaching time), large optical modulation of about 45% (at 600 nm), high coloration efficiency (130.8 cm(2)/C at the wavelength of 600 nm) and good cycle stability. These excellent properties are derived from mesoporous channels in the films. For the mesoporous channels can shorten the diffusion paths and make it easier for ions to transport in films.
Preparation of Multicolor Electrochromic Polymer Composite Film with Laminated Structure

Abstract:Two electrochromic polymers , poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) ( PEDOT) and poly { 4 , 4' , 4 "-tris [4-(2-bithienyl) pheny ] amine } ( PTBTPA) with different neutral absorption spectra and the complementary colors were synthesized via electrochemical polymerization method , respectively. Then the composite film with the laminated structure was controllably prepared by adjusting the electrochemical polymerization parameters. FTIR spectra and SEM images indicate that the laminated composite film is obtained. UV-Vis spectra and electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the composite film exhibits a noticeable electrochromism with reversible color changes from orange , blue to dark green, and maintains good electrochemical activity and optical contrast compared to those of the pristine PTBTPA film and PEDOT film. This work is to provide a simple and efficient method to build the laminated composite structure for achieving multicolor or even full-color electrochromic materials , which is also suitable for other electrochromic polymer systems.

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) films were prepared on indium–tin oxide (ITO) glass by sol–gel method. The influence of annealing temperature on the structural, morphological, optical, electrochemical, and electrochromic properties has been investigated. The film annealed at 250 °C with an amorphous structure exhibits a noticeable electrochromic performance, such as the highest optical modulation of 58.5 % at 550 nm, high electrochemical stability, and excellent reversibility (Q b/Q c = 96.3 %). An electrochromic (EC) device based on WO3/NiO complementary structure shows improved performance. It exhibits high optical transmittance modulation of 62 % at 550 nm, excellent cycling stability, and relatively fast electrochromic response time (10 s for coloration and 19 s for bleaching).

Abstract:A novel electrochromic device (ECD) was constructed with two same-material electrochromic layers deposited on indium-tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrates, a double-sided ITO-coated glass substrate, and a gel electrolyte. The device exhibited fast coloration/bleaching response and significantly enhanced optical modulation and coloration efficiency compared to traditional ECDs.

Abstract:Abstract The optical properties of electrochromic materials can change reversibly under an applied voltage. Tungsten oxide has been widely used in various fields because of its excellent electrochromic efficiency. The electrochromic films produced by W 18 O 49 nanowires and WO 3 have excellent performance. Compared with WO 3 film, the porous structure of the nanowires can make ions rapidly diffuse, provide a larger surface area for the charge transfer reaction, promote electrolyte penetration, and effectively improve the electrochromic efficiency. In this paper, a kind of electrochromic tungsten oxide thin film combining W 18 O 49 nanowires and WO 3 was prepared by combining a hydrothermal method and a tungstic acid method. The electrochromic performance of the film was improved considerably by combining the two kinds of thin films. The results show that the optical modulation amplitude is close to ideal (92.5%) and has a fast colour fading (colour 1.7 s and colour fading 1.3 s) effect, a good cycle stability, which is much better than those of the WO 3 and W 18 O 49 films. Using lithium perchlorate and PC as raw materials and polyurethane as a photocuring agent, a solid-state electrochromic device based on a tungsten oxide composite film was fabricated by capillarity. The colouring time of the device is 2 s, the fading time is 1 s, and the optical modulation amplitude is 85%.

Abstract:By using electrochemical activated FTO glass as both a substrate and catalyst, we developed a facile and fast method to fabricate a WO3 center dot 2H(2)O thin film with a thickness of similar to 100 nm. Due to the specific layered crystal structure of the dihydrated phase and the good contact with the transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) layer, the as- prepared WO3 center dot 2H(2)O thin film achieved a fast coloration/bleaching response speed (t(c, 90%) = 3.2 s, t(b, 90%) = 1.2 s), excellent cyclic stability, wide optical modulation range up to 53.8% and a high coloration efficiency of 107.8 cm(2) C-1. A solid-state electrochromic device with a size of 5 cm x 5 cm was also fabricated, exhibiting high transparency contrast and good reversibility between the bleached and colored states.
Enhanced Coloration Time of Electrochromic Device Using Integrated WO3@PEO Electrodes for Wearable Devices

Abstract:Electrochromic technologies that exhibit low power consumption have been spotlighted recently. In particular, with the recent increase in demand for paper-like panel displays, faster coloration time has been focused on in researching electrochromic devices. Tungsten trioxide (WO3) has been widely used as an electrochromic material that exhibits excellent electrochromic performance with high thermal and mechanical stability. However, in a solid film-type WO3 layer, the coloration time was long due to its limited surface area and long diffusion paths of lithium ions (Li-ions). In this study, we attempted to fabricate a fibrous structure of WO3@poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) composites through electrospinning. The fibrous and porous layer showed a faster coloration time due to a short Li-ion diffusion path. Additionally, PEO in fibers supports Li-ions being quickly transported into the WO3 particles through their high ionic conductivity. The optimized WO3@PEO fibrous structure showed 61.3 cm2/C of high coloration efficiency, 1.6s fast coloration time, and good cycle stability. Lastly, the electrochromic device was successfully fabricated on fabric using gel electrolytes and a conductive knitted fabric as a substrate and showed a comparable color change through a voltage change from -2.5 V to 1.5 V.

Abstract:An all-solid-state electrochromic window (ECW) based on an electrodeposited PProDOT-Me2 and V2O5-TiO2 film with PMMA gel electrolyte that has high conductivity has been fabricated. The ECW has been found to have high contrast, rapid switching speed, long-term electrochemical stability and open-circuit memory. Reversible color change between blue and colorless was observed when an appropriate small potential was repeatedly applied to the ECW. Reversible color change between blue and colorless with 150,000 cycling was also observed.

Abstract:Inorganic electrochromic materials have attracted wide attention due to excellent safety and simple preparation process. However, its applications are limited by slow response time, monotonous color change, low coloring efficiency and poor stability. Although people have made great contributions to improve its performance, there is still a big challenge to get comprehensive improvement in the mentioned aspects. Here, we use Prussian blue (PB) with special crack structure as support, and composite manganese dioxide material (MnO2) on its surface to prepare a new electrochromic nanocomposite material PB/MnO2. PB/MnO2 materials can realize the superposition of different colors under the synergistic effect of the two materials. Meanwhile, MnO2 porous structure and PB crack structure provide the reaction of ion channels, and as a result of the existence of PB nanoparticles, enlarges the area of effective contact materials and the electrolyte, so as to shorten the response time of the reaction. Usually, the materials with porous and crack structures are poor in stability. Fortunately, the compactness of MnO2 pores makes up for this defect and even gives PB/MnO2 ma-terials excellent cycle stability (99.62 % of the original surface capacitance after 1500 cycles). In addition, with PB/MnO2 material as an electrode, an electrochromic energy storage device can be prepared. The results show that the device can provide an open-circuit voltage up to 1.10 V, and can achieve obvious color change in a short time (response time is 2.98 s/3.62 s) under the action of applied voltage, and the coloring efficiency is as high as 2019.57 cm2/C, which is unprecedented in current research. This work provides a new opportunity to design next-generation safe and intelligent hybrid energy storage system for consumer electronics.

Abstract:Gel polymer electrolytes have been acknowledged as a promising candidate within the realm of electrochromic devices (ECDs) for addressing the safety concerns of liquid electrolytes and overcoming the poor ionic conductivity inherent in solid electrolytes. Herein, a novel strategy for the simple fabrication of in-situ UV-curable gel polymer electrolytes has been proposed to enhance ionic conductivity and promote interface interactions, thereby facilitating remarkably fast response times. After rapid photopolymerization, the electrolyte containing 10 wt% trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate exhibits the highest ionic conductivity (1.42 mS cm −1 ), which is raised to a value of 1.79 mS cm −1 by the incorporation of alumina inorganic nanoparticles. Additionally, the polymer electrolyte demonstrates high optical transmittance, relatively notable interface adhesive strength (26 KPa), and outstanding thermal stability, with only a 5 % weight loss observed up to 126 °C. These distinctive characteristics enable the fabrication of all-solid-state WO 3 -NiO ECDs characterized by large optical modulation (50.82 %), super-short switching times (0.8 s for bleaching and 4.0 s for coloration), and exceptional cycling stability (95.7 % after 10,000 cycles, and 77.4 % after 15,000 cycles). This article effectively explores a straightforward method for fabricating high-performance all-solid-state ECDs, simplifying the process flow and enhancing the application prospects for ECDs.

Abstract:Metallo-supramolecular polymer (MEPE)-based thin film electrochromic devices (ECDs) have been considered to be a promising platform for portable electronics as their low cost, excellent redox properties, high optical contrast, and rich colors. However, poor cycle stability and slow response speed are serious bottlenecks for widespread commercial devices. Here, a gel electrolyte functionalized by the anodic active species p -benzoquinone ( p -BQ) (GET-BQ) was reported. It has outstanding conductivity (∼4.62 mS cm −1 ) and transparency. Fe(II)-MEPE-based ECDs incorporating the GET-BQ electrolyte (ECD-BQ) showed lower voltage operation (∼1.1 V), higher optical contrast (ca. ΔT ∼ 35.7%), faster response rate ( t b ∼ 2.5 s, t c ∼ 0.3 s), and superb cycling durability (<1.7% ΔT loss after 1440 cycles) than those without p -BQ. Moreover, the charge transport kinetics of ECD-BQ were explored by the CV curve, in situ infrared spectroelectrochemical analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The charge transfer mechanism of electrochromic material and electrolytes in ECD-BQ offers a novel entry to design superior electrolytes for high-performance ECD.

Abstract:A novel strategy to obtain rapid electrochromic switching response by introducing 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) moiety into polytriphenylamine backbone has been developed. The electrochromic properties of the integrated polymer film are investigated and a possible mechanism is proposed with TEMPO as a counterion-reservoir group to rapidly balance the charges during electrochromic switching, which leads to significantly improved electrochromism performance.

Abstract:N,N,N?,N?-tetraphenylbenzidine (TPB) and N,N,N?,N?-tetra(p-tolyl)benzidine (TPB-4Me), were synthesized. Their optoelectrochemical and electrochromic properties were discussed. Both TPB and TPB-4Me exhibited a reversible color change between colorless and dark-green under applied bias voltages. Furthermore, TPB or TPB-4Me and ethyl viologen (EV) or tungsten trioxide (WO3) were used as anode and cathode electrochromic materials, respectively; a series of color complementary ambipolar gel electrochromic devices (ECDs), ECD-3, ECD-4, ECD5, and ECD-6, were fabricated and investigated. All of ambipolar ECDs displayed reversible color changes between transparent and black under different voltages. In addition, they exhibited high optical contrast in both visible and near-infrared regions; their corresponding optical contrasts were 74.6%, 87.9%, 78.2%, and 78.5% at 750 nm, respectively. In comparison, ECDs based on WO3 exhibited higher optical contrast (in near-infrared region) and shorter bleaching time than ECDs based on EV. The optical contrasts of ECD-5 and ECD-6 based on WO3 were greater than 57.6% and 54.0% in the wavelength range of 420?1000 nm, respectively. Their corresponding coloring/bleaching times were found to be 6.6 s/21.7 s and 6.0 s/24.6 s, respectively. The transparent-to-black attributes of these ambipolar ECDs are promising for electrochromic smart windows.

Abstract:Molybdenum oxide (MoO 3 ) stands out as a predominant electrochromic material, finding extensive applications in sustainable photoelectric devices such as multifunctional smart windows. This study introduces an innovative approach to fabricating electrochromic composite films by doping molybdenum oxide with tungsten atoms through electrochemical deposition on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates. Electrochemical and optical measurements demonstrate the films' superior performance in terms of switching time and coloring efficiency. Analyses using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy suggest the formation of a distinct lamellar structure during the electrodeposition process. Additionally, the incorporation of tungsten atoms appears to facilitate an effective WOMo bonding connection. This introduction of W atoms may create a new doping energy level. The unique lamellar structure enhances the number of electrochemically active sites, while the WOMo coupling acts as a channel for electron migration. Consequently, the switching time decreased from 5.5 s to 3.9 s, and the coloring efficiency increased from 15.47 cm 2 C −1 to 40.43 cm 2 C −1 . Furthermore, the transmittance of the W-doped MoO 3 films surpasses that of the pure MoO 3 films. Overall, tungsten doping improves the electrochromic properties of MoO 3 , indicating promising potential for further applications.

Abstract:The optical and electrochromic properties of tungsten oxide films deposited by e-beam evaporation were investigated. A laminated structure device was prepared. The as-deposited tungsten oxide film was used as the electrochromic film. A solid polymer electrolyte PPG- PMMA-LiClO4 was used as an ionic conductor. Spectrophotometric measurements show that the luminous transmittance of the device can be modulated between about 60% and 15%.
Colorless to Multicolored, Fast Switching, and Highly Stable Electrochromic Devices Based on Thermally Cross-Linking Copolymer

Abstract:Transparent-to-colored electrochromic devices exhibit promising application prospects and have gained popularity. Herein, two triphenylamine derivatives TPA-OCH3 and TPA-CN with styryl moieties and different donor or acceptor units were designed and synthesized to further prepare solvent-resistant thermally cross-linking polymer P(TPA-OCH3) and P(TPA-CN) without any additional initiator. P(TPA-OCH3) and P(TPA-CN) possess two pairs of redox peaks, and P(TPA-OCH3) shows a lower onset oxidation potential compared to P(TPA-CN) because of the pendent donor unit. Correspondingly, both polymers exhibit multicolored changes from the neutral colorless state to noticeable oxidized colors under different potentials. Furthermore, the thermally cross-linking copolymer P(TPA-OCH3-co-TPA-CN) was obtained by TPA-OCH3 and TPA-CN (the molar ratio is 2:1) and presents outstanding electrochromism with four color changes (colorless-orange-blue-purple) due to the multistep redox process of TPA-OCH3 and TPA-CN units. It is more intriguing that the electrochromic device based on the copolymer films possesses a high optical contrast of 57.8% at 680 nm, fast switching time (0.52 and 0.66 s), and robust cyclic stability over 30 000 cycles with very little decay. Therefore, the thermally cross-linking copolymer is a promising candidate material for high-performance transmittive electrochromic devices, such as smart windows, sunglasses, and E-papers.

Abstract:Under optical and electrical control, a multifunctional electro-optical dual-control color-changing and energy storage device not only realizes fast color conversion but also achieves good energy storage performance. In this work, Mo-doped WO3 (Mo-WO3) films were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method, among which the 2 at. % Mo-doped WO3 film has the best electrochromic and energy storage performance. Meanwhile, TiO2/NiO composite films were prepared by the hydrothermal method and electrodeposition method. The TiO2/NiO/N719 photoanode was prepared by the dip-dyeing method on the TiO2/NiO composite film. The results show that the TiO2/NiO-10s/N719 composite film has excellent photoelectric conversion and energy storage properties. Finally, choosing Mo-WO3 as the cathode and the TiO2/NiO/N719 film as the anode, a multifunctional electro-optical dual-control Mo-WO3@TiO2/NiO/N719 color-changing and energy storage device was constructed. Under electrical control, it shows a fast color switching rate (the coloring/bleaching time is 4.1/2.9 s), excellent coloration efficiency (62.1 cm2/C), obviously improved area capacitance (90.4 mF/cm2), and excellent cycle stability. Under optical control, it shows a shortened optical response time (the coloring/bleaching is 70.3/158.9 s), excellent coloration efficiency (58.2 cm2/C), better area capacitance (51.1 mF/cm2), and excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency.

Abstract:A novel complementary electrochromic device (ECD) with full spectrum absorption, based on surface-confined tungsten oxide (WO3), and solution-phase N-methyl-phenothiazine (NMP) was described and constructed. Cathodically colored inorganic material WO3 is near-infrared active, and anodicallly colored organic material NMP is visible active. These two electrochromic materials possessed the matching redox potential value and complementary spectra absorption in the full spectrum region. The fabricated ECD combined the electrochromic properties of blue colored WO3 and red colored NMP, and exhibited vivid color change from transparent to dark publish-red with superior optical modulation (ΔT %) both in the visible region (81 % at 535 nm) and near-infrared region (70 % at 1000 nm). It took 10 s to color the device under the application of −1.1 V and 18 s to bleach the device completely with the potential of 0 V. Furthermore, the assembled ECD realized a high coloration efficiency of 110 cm2 C−1 at 535 nm and also achieved excellent long-term cycling stability and maintains 95 % of the initial ΔT % value after 60,000 continuous switchings.
