Abstract:The fiberization and integration of electronic devices into textiles represent an important strategy to design wearable and comfortable intelligent systems. However, the function realization of existing intelligent textiles often depends on complex and rigid silicon-based computation components, which have posed significant challenges in terms of integration, energy consumption and user comfort. This has spurred the need for a paradigm shift towards more seamless and efficient solutions. The advent of chipless interactive textile electronics presents a promising pathway for overcoming these challenges and unlocking new possibilities in wearable technology.

Abstract:Multimodal, multipoint sensing and wearability are the impending pursuits of next‐generation flexible electronics. Electronic textiles (e‐textile), known as the convergence of traditional textile technology and burgeoning electrical engineering, have been rapidly exploited evolving fields in electronics, light‐emitting diodes, energy harvesting, and storage devices. Benefiting from their mechanical compliance, comfortable, lightweight, and economically viable features, e‐textiles are attractive for wearing on the soft and curved human body. This study fabricates a textile‐based stretchable sensor by using an electronic dyeing method and the sensor is used for human motion monitoring and analysis. With specific precursor selection and texture regulation, the conductive textile shows good flexibility and adaptable strain–electric response. Combined with the commendable mechanical performance and high durability, the electronic textile sensor can capture and monitor various human activities and distinguish similar motions, which have great potential in biomonitoring, soft co‐robotics, and human–machine interaction.

Abstract:Smart textiles, which integrate different electronic devices in yarns, fabrics, or garments, have the ability to perceive and respond to environmental stimuli. With the features of mechanical flexibility, knittable integration, and wearable comfort, smart textiles have great potential in wearable electronics. Here, a naturally integrated force sensing textile based on knittable composite coaxial fibers is proposed. A flexible commercial nylon fiber works as a substrate, an evaporated Au layer serves as an inner electrode, and carbon nanotubes and polyaniline act as piezoresistive sensing materials in the coaxial fibers. The assembled sensor retains both high detection performance and outstanding integration properties. A high detection limit, fast response, reversible recovery, mechanical stability, and good repeatability are realized in this sensor. Subsequently, the potential of using a coaxial fiber to achieve naturally knitted structures by an embroidery method is explored. A sensing array can be integrated into designed patterns and can achieve multiple site force measurements. Furthermore, with the flexibility and porosity of textiles, these smart textiles provide breathability in wearable applications, which is valuable in long-term detection. It is anticipated that the naturally knitted smart textile will be practical in wearable healthcare and long-term force perception.

Abstract:Skin‐inspired wearable devices hold great potentials in the next generation of smart portable electronics owing to their intriguing applications in healthcare monitoring, soft robotics, artificial intelligence, and human–machine interfaces. Despite tremendous research efforts dedicated to judiciously tailoring wearable devices in terms of their thickness, portability, flexibility, bendability as well as stretchability, the emerging Internet of Things demand the skin‐interfaced flexible systems to be endowed with additional functionalities with the capability of mimicking skin‐like perception and beyond. This review covers and highlights the latest advances of burgeoning multifunctional wearable electronics, primarily including versatile multimodal sensor systems, self‐healing material‐based devices, and self‐powered flexible sensors. To render the penetration of human‐interactive devices into global markets and households, economical manufacturing techniques are crucial to achieve large‐scale flexible systems with high‐throughput capability. The booming innovations in this research field will push the scientific community forward and benefit human beings in the near future.

Abstract:Fiber electronics discretely integrated into daily life is taking center stage for its enormous potentials for healthcare, physiological monitoring, and human-machine interfaces. However, the state-of-the-art fiber electronics are remarkably distinguished from generic fibers in diameter, stiffness, smoothness, and productivity. Here, we developed a universal scalable manufacturing process and generic fiber-like fine and soft self-powered interactive electronics with a diameter of only dozens of μm and a continuous length of hundreds of kilometers. These fiber electronics are prepared with a large-scale manufacturing speed (>20 m/min), and adapt to modern textile technology including weaving, knitting, sewing and embroidering. Moreover, Kawabata evaluation system for fabrics was systematically employed to analyze the fiber electronics enabled e-textile's sensorial comfort, suggesting that adding the fiber electronics to fabric benefits its tactile sensations (e.g., softness, fluffy and fullness). Based on tribotronics, the interactive fiber electronics-based smart clothing demonstrates versatile applications including biomechanical energy harvesting, vital signal detecting, human motion recognizing and tactile sensing.

Abstract:AbstractEndowing textiles with perceptual function, similar to human skin, is crucial for the development of next-generation smart wearables. To date, the creation of perceptual textiles capable of sensing potential dangers and accurately pinpointing finger touch remains elusive. In this study, we present the design and fabrication of intelligent perceptual textiles capable of electrically responding to external dangers and precisely detecting human touch, based on conductive silk fibroin-based ionic hydrogel (SIH) fibers. These fibers possess excellent fracture strength (55 MPa), extensibility (530%), stable and good conductivity (0.45 S·m–1) due to oriented structures and ionic incorporation. We fabricated SIH fiber-based protective textiles that can respond to fire, water, and sharp objects, protecting robots from potential injuries. Additionally, we designed perceptual textiles that can specifically pinpoint finger touch, serving as convenient human-machine interfaces. Our work sheds new light on the design of next-generation smart wearables and the reshaping of human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:Wearable electronics are receiving increasing attention with the advances of human society and technologies. Among various types of wearable electronics, electronic fibers/textiles, which integrate the comfort and appearance of conventional fibers/textiles with the functions of electronic devices, are expected to play important roles in remote health monitoring, disease diagnosis/treatment, and human-machine interface. This article aims to review the recent advances in electronic fibers/textiles, thus providing a comprehensive guiding reference for future work. First, we review the selection of functional materials and fabrication strategies of fiber-shaped electronic devices with emphasis on the newly developed functional materials and technologies. Their applications in sensing, light emitting, energy harvest, and energy storage are discussed. Then, the fabrication strategies and applications of electronic textiles are summarized. Furthermore, the integration of multifunctional electronic textiles and their applications are summarized. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges and propose the future development of electronic fibers/textiles.

Abstract:Textile displays are poised to revolutionize current electronic devices, and reshape the future of electronics and related fields such as biomedicine and soft robotics. However, they remain unavailable due to the difficulty of directly constructing electroluminescent devices onto the textile-like substrate to really display desired programmable patterns. Here, a novel textile display is developed from continuous electroluminescent fibers made by a one-step extrusion process. The resulting displaying textile is flexible, stretchable, three-dimensionally twistable, conformable to arbitrarily curved skins, and breathable, and can dynamically display a series of desired patterns, making it useful for bioinspired electronics, soft robotics, and electroluminescent skins, among other applications. It is demonstrated that these displaying textiles can also communicate with a computer and mouse brain for smart display and camouflage applications. This work may open up a new direction for the integration of wearable electroluminescent devices with the human body, providing new and promising communication platforms.
High-performance multimodal smart textile for artificial sensation and health monitoring

Abstract:Textile sensors are a branch of revolutionary electronics that carry tantalizing prospects toward myriad applications. However, their capability of differentiating multiple stimuli still remains a challenge. Here, we develop a multimodal smart textile that can simultaneously measure temperature and pulse/touch in real time, with high performance and no signal interference. The smart textile outputs two independent variables, with the whole textile as a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) to detect touch/pulse and its core thermoresistive micro/nano porous fiber strand (also is the TENG’s working electrode) to detect temperature. The stretchable core thermoresistive micro/nano porous fiber of the smart textile achieves record-high thermal sensitivity (β = 4994.55 K, α=−5.58%/K at 26 °C) and the fastest response/recovery time (97/239 ms) among previously reported fiber/textile-based temperature sensors, to our best knowledge. This fiber based on the growth of Fe2(MoO4)3 on graphene has much higher temperature sensing performance (∼3.2 times higher thermal sensitivity) than that based on directly blending Fe2(MoO4)3 and graphene. Moreover, the fiber has high thermal stability and its temperature sensing performance is insensitive to strain (stretching, bending and pressing). The smart textile is demonstrated for artificial sensation and health monitoring to simultaneously provide accurate profiles of both temperature and touch/pulse. This work provides new insights for wearable sensors.

Intelligent Textiles Based on MEMS Technology

Abstract:Since the first electrocardiogram (ECG) was recorded on a piece of sensitive paper by Einthoven in 1903, medical doctors had collected much more information of patients and saved many lives. In this paper, a novel prototype of collecting physiological parameters of human body based on silicon flexible skins and the process flow of fabrication by MEMS technology have been proposed. This novel approach enables embedding of the sensors into textiles without compromising the flexibility and wearability of the textiles, and the medical doctor can study the state of an illness continually in door using wireless communication. With the micromachining techniques, a flexible electrode array and a thermoresistive transducer array were designed and fabricated on a silicon wafer. The silicon based sensor array was formed to flexible sensor skin by coating polyimide both two sides after DRIE patterning the backside of the silicon wafer, and then the wearers' electrocardiogram and temperature based intelligent textiles is presented after conductive yarn was used to stitch the flexible sensor skin into textiles. When the micro sensors and transducers integrated on garment were changed, this technology allows for various functions to be implemented. In addition, finite element method has been used to obtain stress level of the flexible sensor array. The results showed that the value of the resistance of the thermo resistive transducer as a function of the bending times has not demonstrated any essential change and the sensor does not lose function or short circuit after the bending tests.

Abstract:Fiber electronics integrated into textiles are ideal for biosensing and personal healthcare. Visual sensing methods enhance user-centric interactive experiences, but current fiber-based optical sensing faces complex integration and fabrication challenges. We propose a body-coupled wireless visual sensing mechanism enabling multi-node sensing on a single fiber without additional electronic components. This fiber can be mass-produced and demonstrates capabilities in visual touch, moisture, and solvent polarity sensing, offering a feasible method for future wearable wireless visual sensing.

Abstract:AbstractIn conjunction with the advancement of digital healthcare, the field of wearable biosensors has experienced rapid growth in recent years and is projected to expand further in the coming years. As wearable biosensors enter their next phase, emphasis is increasingly placed on developing comfortable, breathable, washable, and lightweight intelligent fibers and textiles as key components. This review examines the contributions of both natural and synthetic fibers and textiles to wearable biosensors. The structure and preparation process of intelligent fibers and textiles are systematically elucidated, including the development of the conductive layer. Additionally, key micro–nano technologies that have emerged in this domain are highlighted such as built‐in power supplies, wireless data transmission, precise data analysis driven by artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Furthermore, advanced functionalities integrated into recent biosensing systems, such as heat management, real‐time displays, and human–machine interaction are summarized. Moreover, the applications of fiber‐based wearable biosensors for monitoring biophysical and biochemical signals are presented. Finally, the challenges faced by the community working on wearable sensors based on intelligent fibers and textiles are discussed alongside promising future directions.

Abstract:Smart wearable electronic devices capable of information exchanging (such as human-machine interfaces) have developed into key carriers for the interconnection, intercommunication, and interaction between humans and machines. Multimodal electronic textiles that incorporate multifunctional sensors into daily clothing are an emerging technology to realize smart wearable electronics. This has greatly advanced human-machine interface technology by bridging the gap between wearing comfort and traditional wearable electronic devices, which will facilitate the rapid development and wide application of natural human-machine interfaces. In this article, we provide a comprehensive summary of the latest research progress on multimodal electronic textiles for intelligent human-machine interfaces. Firstly, we introduce the most representative electronic textile manufacturing strategies in terms of functional fiber preparation and multimodal textile forming. Then, we explore the multifunctional sensing capability of multimodal electronic textiles and emphasize their advanced applications in intelligent human-machine interfaces. Finally, we present new insights on the future research directions and the challenges faced in practical applications of multimodal electronic textiles.

Abstract:Intelligent textiles provide an ideal platform for merging technology into daily routines. However, current textile electronic systems often rely on rigid silicon components, which limits seamless integration, energy efficiency, and comfort. Chipless electronic systems still face digital logic challenges owing to the lack of dynamic energy-switching carriers. We propose a chipless body-coupled energy interaction mechanism for ambient electromagnetic energy harvesting and wireless signal transmission through a single fiber. The fiber itself enables wireless visual-digital interactions without the need for extra chips or batteries on textiles. Because all of the electronic assemblies are merged in a miniature fiber, this facilitates scalable fabrication and compatibility with modern weaving techniques, thereby enabling versatile and intelligent clothing. We propose a strategy that may address the problems of silicon-based textile systems.

Abstract:Fibers and textiles play key roles in the development and day-to-day activities of human society. Innovations related to flexible electronics—smart fibers and textiles with sensing, thermal regulation, and energy management capabilities—have drawn great interest from both academic and industrial communities. Smart fibers and textiles are anticipated to revolutionize personal health management due to their manifold features and capabilities, providing the foundation for many intelligent wearables. In this Perspective, we provide a brief overview of recent advances in the design and fabrication of smart fibers and textiles for health management applications, focusing primarily on those with sensing, thermal regulation, and energy management functions. Abstract:Smart textiles with high sensitivity and rapid response for various external stimuli have gained tremendous attentions in human healthcare monitoring, personal heat management, and wearable electronics. However, the current smart textiles only acquire desired signal passively, regularly lacking subsequent on-demand therapy actively. Herein, a robust, breathable, and flexible smart textiles as multi-function sensor and wearable heater for human health monitoring and gentle thermotherapy in real time is constructed. The composite fiber as strain sensor (CFY@PU) was fabricated via warping carbon fiber yarns (CFY) onto polyurethane fibers (PU), which endowed composite fiber with high conductivity, excellent sensitivity (GF = 76.2), and fantastic dynamic durability (7500 cycles) in strain sensing. In addition, CFY@PU can detect various degrees of human movements such as elbow bending, swallowing and pulse, which can provide effective information for disease diagnosis. More surprisingly, weaving CFY@PU into a fabric can assemble highly sensitive pressure sensor for remote communication and information encryption. Warping CFY onto Kevlar would obtain temperature-sensitive composite fiber (CFY@Kevlar) as temperature sensor and wearable heater for on-demand thermotherapy, which provided unique opportunities in designing smart textiles with ultrahigh sensitivity, rapid response, and great dynamic durability.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Textile electronics refer to the fibers or fiber assemblies (yarn, fabric, or clothing) possessing electronic functions, including generation, transmittance, evaluation, and modulation of electrons. It includes devices and systems. Since textile electronics are light, flexible, breathable, and functional, it exhibits great potentials in a wide range of applications. However, the noticeable progress of textile electronics has been focused on large-area, flexible devices with several functions, such as sensation, actuation, display, antenna, and energy harvesting and storage. The current textile electronic system is achieved by hybrids of microelectronic chips and textile electronic devices. They corporate together to provide complicated functions of sensation, actuation, communication, analysis, control, learning, memory, and adaption. The textile electronic system is an important branch of wearable electronics. This article provides a comprehensive review and analysis of textile electronic devices, electronic system integration, and applications. Firstly, it focuses on the development and technology of a number of textile electronic devices, which include sensors, actuators, displays, antennas, energy storage, and generators. This section introduces the functions, classification, performance, and limitations of textile electronic devices. In the textile electronic system, the signal module, microprocessor, data storage, and communication module now cannot be realized on textile due to the technology limitation. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate the relevant microelectronic chips and micro-electro-mechanic devices into the textile to achieve system-on-fabric. The next section of this review describes and analyzes the research gaps of textile electronics in wearable applications. The key requirement is that textile electronics should deliver advanced electronic functions without deteriorating the textile properties. In addition, textile electronics also need to face strict requirements on biocompatibility, laundering, and comfortability. We then elaborate on the major scientific issues in several dimensions, covering design, synthesis, characterization of flexible electronic materials, multi-physics and multi-scale modeling of textile electronics devices and systems, test standardization of textile electronic devices and systems, and safety issues of textile electronics. Then, we discuss the present core technologies of textile electronics in various aspects. The electronic materials include intrinsic conductive materials that include metal in different dimensions, conductive and semiconducting polymer, and carbon derivatives. The additive fabrication technology covers printing techniques, coating, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, in situ polymerization, carbonization, and others. At the device level, the fabrication technology can be separated into single multicomponent fiber electronics, or fiber assemblies, or heterogeneous assembly of microelectronic chips in the textile structure, elaborated with examples. In addition, we discuss different connection integration methods, such as embroidery, weaving, and knitting. We also discuss the software development for textile electronics, optical fiber system requirements, and test standards for textile electronics. The last section elaborates on potential applications of textile electronics. In online healthcare and individualized medical treatments, textile electronics provide real-time monitoring and wireless feedback of human physiological and physical signals, such as temperature, electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyography (EMG), respiration, gait, posture, etc. or provide intervention and treatments. It breaks down the geographic limitation and increases the effectiveness of treatment. In sports, based on the obtained real-time data of individuals and AI models of a large population, wearable textile electronic systems may offer advice on training so that efficiency can be enhanced, and injury is avoided. The textile electronics can detect potential environmental hazards, such as toxic substances and impact by falling objects or vehicles. In addition, the intimate contact characteristics of textile electronics render more immersion in virtual and augmented reality experiments to users by real-time feedback on physiological parameters, and by additional stimulation, such as haptic, olfactory, and microclimate. It broadens the scope of applications of augmented reality and virtual reality in online education, online design, online gaming.

Abstract:E-textiles are of great significance for next-generation wearable electronics. However, the current smart textiles generally have shortcomings such as intricate preparation processes and redundant structure. Here, we have developed a 3D printing method to prepare stretchable elastic fibers with a coaxial core-sheath structure, which consists of conductive core and insulative sheath. The addition of graphene and PTFE particles successfully manipulates the rheological behavior of the PDMS prepolymer and makes it suitable for 3D printing of core-sheath coaxial stretchable fibers. Furthermore, the large-scale and customized manufacturing of stretchable smart textiles has been achieved. Based on triboelectric effect, the core-sheath elastic fiber can perform the function of wearble tactile sensing as e-skin and the smart textile demonstrates the ability of matrix tactile sensing through the interlaced structure of warp and weft. Moreover, the smart textile has many advantages such as washability, breathability, super stretchability and robustness, making it promising for wearable electronics.
Flexible Optical Fiber-Based Smart Textile Sensor for Human–Machine Interaction

Abstract:Flexible sensors are the main components of wearable devices. Compared with flexible substrate-based skin-like sensors, flexible textile sensors have the intrinsic advantages of excellent breathability, compliance with the human body and comfort to human skin. In this article, a flexible optical fiber-based smart textile (FOFT) sensor has been proposed for the application of intelligent human–machine interaction (HMI) and healthcare. The FOFT sensor integrated fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with yarns in the way of the plain weave. A double-layer flexible optical fiber crossover structure is proposed to improve the measurement accuracy of the sensor for human body signals. Such a structure leads to a highly flexible textile and wearing comfort. The weak characteristic information of the human body can be extracted by the sensor based on the wavelength demodulation of double FBGs. Combined with the backpropagation (BP) neural network, an FOFT sensor-based gesture recognition application with an off-line accuracy of 97.02% has been developed. Furthermore, the FOFT sensor is used to monitor the human respiratory signals under different postures and obtain the respiratory rate. A series of experiments demonstrate that the FOFT sensor has a huge potential in HMI and healthcare.

Abstract:Textile-based electronics (e-textiles) have attracted huge attention in wearable sensors recently. Even though highly sensitive textile-based pressure sensors and highly stretchable textile-based strain sensors are widely researched and reported in recent years, it is still full of challenges to develop high stretchable textile-based sensors simultaneously and satisfy strain and pressure sensing, which is necessary for full-range detection of human motions. On the other hand, compared to traditional planar e-textiles, fiber-shaped e-textiles have plenty of advantages due to their fibrous architecture with lightweight, portable, skin compliant, and easily weave properties. In this work, a fiber-shaped textile, knitted with hierarchical polyurethane (PU) fibers, is used to fabricate a multifunctional e-textile by coating of silver nanowires (AgNWs) and styrene–butadiene–styrene. Due to the AgNWs conductive networks, the inherent stretchability of PU fibers, and the hierarchical structure, the as-prepared e-textile exhibits high conductivity, high stretchability, high sensitivity, and multi-detection of strain and pressure. What is more, the fabricated multifunctional e-textiles are also successfully weaved into electronic fabric for 2D force mapping. The simple, scalable strategy endows the multifunctional e-textiles great potentials in full-range detection and health care areas.
