Abstract:Spontaneous vesicle formation was observed in aqueous mixtures of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide and single-tailed cationic surfactants. The influences of pH, addition of long-chain alcohols, variation of hydrocarbon chain length, and head group size of the cationic surfactants were investigated systematically. It was found that 30-50% hydrolyzed degree of polyacrylamide and cationic surfactants with 10 or 12 methylene groups are suitable for vesicle formation in the mixed aqueous systems at pH 9.2. Addition of long-chain alcohols was found to be helpful for vesicle formation in some cases. The vesicle stability was also investigated at various temperatures and amounts of ethanol addition. Abstract:The gradual transition from cylindrical micelles to vesicles on increasing the temperature is demonstrated in the cationic–anionic surfactant system of sodium dodecylsulfate/dodecyltriethylammonium bromide. The transition has been studied by dynamic light scattering studies (see graph), a freeze-fracture technique with observation by electron microscopy, and rheology measurements.

Abstract:For a hydrogel based on a zwitterionic dendritic surfactant, we report an apparently unprecedented reversible temperature-induced gel-to-gel phase transition below the melting point of its alkyl chains, where the supramolecular self-assembly of surfactant molecules underwent a dramatic transformation from low-temperature surfactant bilayers to high-temperature entangled surfactant worm-like micelles.

Abstract:Using ammonium persulfate (APS) and N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMED) as a pair of redox initiator, the spherical polyacrylamide gels were prepared by aqueous solution polymerization. By recording the diameter change of the gel particles in the water with time, the swelling processes of the polyacrylamide gel particles were investigated through using a microscope with calibrated scale, and then via mathematical treatment based on the swelling kinetic theory of the nonionic hydrogel presented by Tanaka and Fillmore (T-F swelling kinetic model), the diffusion coefficients in the gel network were obtained. Furthermore, the effects of the concentrations of the crosslinker, initiator and monomer and the temperature on the diffusion coefficient in gel network were studied. The experimental results show that the diffusion coefficient in gel network decreases with the increase of the concentration of the crosslinker when the concentration of crosslinker is small, while it increases with increasing the concentration of crosslinker when the concentration of crosslinker is above its critical value (1.5%(mol)). The diffusion coefficient in gel network increases with the increase of the concentration of initiator or monomer too. Based on considering the contribution of the linear dimension of the randomly coiled polymer chain to the friction coefficient, the Tanaka, et al. proposed model for the relationship between the diffusion coefficient in gel network and temperature was modified, and using this modified model, the predicting results fit the experimental observations with more accuracy.

Abstract:Intermediate structures of the aggregates in the aqueous solution of all ABA-type silicone surfactant and in the process of all SDS-induced vesicle-micelle transition are reported. In single ABA silicone surfactant aqueous Solutions, large multilamellar vesicles (MLV), small single lamellar vesicles (SLV), threadlike micelles (TLM), and spheroidal micelles were observed. Interestingly, a large amount of TLMs were found entrapped into the large MLVs, but not in SLVs. Disintegration of the small vesicles inside the MLVs indicates that the entrapped TLM are from the disintegrated membrane of the entrapped small vesicles. Addition of SDS induced a transition from vesicles or threadlike micelles to spheroidal micelles. The intermediate structures, such as the appearance of small holes in the vesicle membrane, the budding of threadlike micelles from the membrane fracture, and the clusters of spheroidal micelles, were observed with increase of the SDS concentration. The electrical conductivity measurements indicated that complex micelles of SDS and silicone surfactant were formed in the solution due to the interaction between the SDS and PEO part of the silicone surfactant.

Abstract:We have characterized the structure and phase behavior of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) aqueous dispersions by using conventional and high-sensitivity nano-differential scanning calorimetry, microscopy, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and electric conductivity measurements. Special attention has been paid to the formation and transformation of the subgel phase. An almost pure subgel can be obtained in the dilute region (below 7.5 mM), while an almost pure coagel phase can be obtained in the concentrated region (above 6.7 wt %). We found that unilamellar vesicles were spontaneously formed in the subgel phase of a 5 mM DODAB dispersion. Infrared spectroscopic data reveal that the only significant change during the gel to subgel phase transition is the ordering in the lipid alkyl chain packing. That is, the head and tail parts of the DODAB molecules change nonsynchronously upon the gel to subgel transition, and the subgel phase is triggered only by the change of the lipid tail part. We propose that the morphological change (from curled membranes in the gel phase to unilamellar vesicles with faceted surface in the subgel phase) is coupled to the change of alkyl chain packing state during the gel to subgel transition. Finally, a full picture of the phase transition sequences for the dilute and concentrated DODAB dispersions is given.

Abstract:Alkaline-urea aqueous solvent system provides a novel and important approach for the utilization of polysaccharide. As one of the most important polysaccharide, chitosan can be well dissolved in this solvent system, and the resultant hydrogel material possesses unique and excellent properties. Thus the sound understanding of the gelation process is fundamentally important. However, current study of the gelation process is still limited due to the absence of direct observation and the lack of attention on the entire process. Here we show the entire gelation process of chitosan LiOH-urea aqueous system by aggregation-induced emission fluorescent imaging. Accompanied by other pseudo in situ investigations, we propose the mechanism of gelation process, focusing on the formation of junction points including hydrogen bonds and crystalline.

Abstract:Dialkyldimethylammonium hydroxide surfactants are highly soluble in water and form spontaneous stable vesicles. These vesicles can be grown to size with added acid, and appear to provide an ideal membrane mimetic system for the study of fusion and ion transport. These phenomena are a consequence of strong hydration forces that are not necessarily limited to the hydroxide ions. The forces can be used to design a variety of model systems whose behavior differs from that of systems in which double-chained surfactants form insoluble liquid crystalline phases in water and unstable vesicle suspensions on prolonged sonication.

Abstract:A type of thermosensitive ionic microgel was successfully prepared via the simultaneous quaternized cross-linking reaction during the surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) as the main monomer and 1-vinylimidazole or 4-vinylpyridine as the comonomer. 1,4-Dibromobutane and 1,6-dibromohexane were used as the halogenated compounds to quaternize the tertiary amine in the comonomer, leading to the formation of a cross-linking network and thermosensitive ionic microgels. The sizes, morphologies, and properties of the obtained ionic microgels were systematically investigated by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic and static light scattering (DLS and SLS), electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), and UV-visible spectroscopy. The obtained ionic microgels were spherical in shape with narrow size distribution. These ionic microgels exhibited thermosensitive behavior and a unique feature of poly(ionic liquid) in aqueous solutions, of which the counteranions of the microgels could be changed by anion exchange reaction with BF4K or lithium trifluoromethyl sulfonate (PFM-Li). After the anion exchange reaction, the ionic microgels were stable in aqueous solution and could be well dispersed in the solvents with different polarities, depending on the type of counteranion. The sizes and thermosensitive behavior of the ionic microgels could be well tuned by controlling the quaternization extent, the type of comonomer, halogenated compounds, and counteranions. The ionic microgels showed superior swelling properties in aqueous solution. Furthermore, these ionic microgels also showed capabilities to encapsulate and release the anionic dyes, like methyl orange, in aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The investigation of the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules and the formation of micelles/vesicles has attracted significant attention. However, in situ and real-time methods for such studies are rare. Here, a surface-sensitive second harmonic generation (SHG) technique was applied to study the formation of vesicles in solutions of an anti-cancer drug, doxorubicin (DOX), and a generally used surfactant (sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate, AOT). With the aid of two-photon fluorescence (TPF), Rayleigh scattering and TEM, we revealed the structural evolution of the aggregated micelles/vesicles. It was found that AOT and DOX molecules rapidly aggregated and formed micelles in the solution. The residual DOX then acted as a "glue" that induced the aggregating/growing of the micelles and the transformation from aggregates to vesicles. The existence of lipid films, which was considered as the necessary intermediate state for vesicle formation, was excluded via the SHG observations, indicating that hollow shells may be directly transformed from solid aggregated micelles in the self-assembly formation of complex vesicles. The combined spectroscopic methods were also used to investigate the formation of vesicles from a commonly used lipid ( i.e. , 1,2-dioleoyl- sn-glycero -3-phospho-rac-(1-glycerol) sodium salt, DOPG) from its stacked bilayers. The swelling, curving and sealing of the DOPG bilayers for vesicle formation was monitored and clear dynamics were revealed. This work shows that the vesicle formation mechanism varies with the initial state of the surfactant/lipid molecules. It not only demonstrates the capability of the combined spectroscopic methods in investigating the aggregated systems but also provides new insight for understanding the formation of vesicles.

Morphological Transformation of SDS Aggregates in a Deep Eutectic Solvent Above the Fracto-eutectogel to Fluid Transition Temperature

Abstract:Understanding surfactant self-assembly in deep eutectic solvents (DES) is important to their potential use in industrial formulations. We have recently reported the formation of a fracto-eutectogel comprising SDS fractal aggregates at a concentration as low as 1.6 wt% in glyceline (a DES comprising glycerol and choline chloride) at room temperature. The building units of the fractals consisted of multilayers of self-assembled SDS lamellae arranged in a dendritic pattern. Here we report that this fractal phase transitions into a fluid phase above a critical gelation temperature, TCG ~ 45 oC, evident from polarized light microscopy (PLM) observations. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) reveals that this phase transition is underpinned by the nanoscopic morphological transformation of the SDS lamellae into cylindrical micelles at T &gt; TGC. Fitting SANS profiles confirms that the morphology of the micelles is SDS-concentration (cSDS) dependent at T &gt; TGC: cylindrical at cSDS &gt; 0.6 wt% and spherical at cSDS = 0.6 wt%. At cSDS &lt; 0.6 wt%, only isotropic scattering was observed in the SANS profiles. Such SDS self-assembly behaviors contrast with those we have previously observed in glycerol, which we attribute to the presence of ions (i.e. choline chloride) in glyceline. Our findings have general implications to surfactant self-assembly in DES, solvents that are rich in hydrogen bonding and ions.

Abstract:The stability of vesicles in a 0.01 mol/L, 2:1 mixtures of anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate) and cationic surfactant (dodecyl triethylammonium bromide) was investigated. Vesicles in this system still exist after 5 months and keep the stability after salt (0.15 mol/L NaBr) addition, variation of pH (2-12) and temperature (from 80 °C to - 22 °C). The vesicle of sodium dodecyl sulfate and dodecyl triethylammonium bromide also formed in 100% ethanol solvent.

Abstract:A novel low weight molecular gelator was designed and synthesized which can gelate several polar solvents with different morphologies. It is interesting that it exchanges morphology between a three-dimensional gel network and vesicles in ethanol via treatment with ultrasound and a heating-cooling process, through supramolecular self-assembly in a certain concentration range. The mechanism of the self-assembly process was investigated by IR, X-ray diffraction and rheological experiments. The results show that the gelator molecules self-assemble in a parallel manner into a lamella structure and the lamellas further aggregate into a gel network or vesicles at room temperature with or without the ultrasonic stimulation.

Abstract:The vesicle formations of 1:1 cationic-anionic surfactants in various nonaqueous polar solvents and their aqueous mixtures were investigated. Outstanding vesicle-forming capability and stability of cationic and anionic surfactants were found in nonaqueous polar solvents and their aqueous mixtures except for in formamide. A small amount of formamide destroys the vesicles formed by cationic-anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions. These results could be very well explained based on the effect of the medium dielectric constant.

Abstract:The transition from vesicles to tubelike structures has been studied in mixed systems of cationic bolaamphiphile BPHTAB [biphenyl-4,4'-bis(oxyhexamethylenetrimetliylammonium bromide)] and its oppositely charged conventional surfactants with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). This transition can be attributed to the fact that tubelike structures are more stable aggregates than vesicles because of the special molecular packing in the aggregates of the mixed systems. The effects of temperature and salt addition on this transition have also been investigated, and the rate of the transition was found to be strongly dependent on temperature. Addition of the appropriate amount of NaBr will accelerate the transition from vesicles to tubelike structures. but the vesicles will transform into micelles at higher salt concentration. Moreover, the micelle-vesicle transition can be realized by addition of n-octanol in the mixed system of BPHTAB/sodium caprate (SC) at higher salt concentrations.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation method was used to study the aggregation of Na and Ca salts in different concentrations of Naphthalene-dipeptide (2NapFF) solutions. The results show that high-valence Ca 2+ triggers the formation of a gel at a certain dipeptide concentration, and the low-valence Na + system follows the aggregation law of general surfactants. The results also show that hydrophobic and electrostatic forces are the main driving forces for the formation of dipeptide aggregates, and that hydrogen bonds do not play a major role in the formation of dipeptide solution aggregates. Hydrophobic and electrostatic effects are the main driving forces for the formation of gels in dipeptide solutions triggered by Ca 2+ . Electrostatic attraction drives Ca 2+ to form a weak coordination with four oxygen atoms on two carboxyl groups, which causes the dipeptide molecules to form a gel with a branched network structure.

Abstract:Two new peptide-based isomers containing cholesterol and naphthalic groups have been designed and synthesized. We found that the position of L-alanine in the linker could tune the gelation properties and morphologies. The molecule with the L-alanine residue positioned in the middle of the linker (1b) shows better gelation behavior than that with L-alanine directly linked to the naphthalimido moiety (1a). As a result, a highly thermostable organogel of 1b with a unique core- shell structure was obtained at high temperature and pressure in acetonitrile. Moreover, the gels of 1a and 1b could undergo an instantaneous gel-to-gel transition triggered by sonication. Ultrasound could break the core shell microsphere of 1b and the micelle structure of 1a into entangled fibers. By studying the mechanism of the sonication-triggered gel-to-gel transition process of these compounds, it can be concluded that ultrasound has a variety of effects on the morphology, such as cutting, knitting, unfolding, homogenizing, and even cross-linking. Typically, ultrasound can cleave and homogenize pi-stacking and hydrophobic interactions among the gel molecules and then reshape the morphologies to form a new gel. This mechanism of morphology transformation triggered by sonication might be attractive in the field of material storage and controlled release.
