Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:In this paper, the C1 interior of the set of vector fields whose integrated flows are expansive is characterized as the set of vector fields without singularities satisfying both Axiom A and the quasi-transversality condition, and it is proved that the above vector fields possessing the shadowing property must be structurally stable. As a corollary, there exists a non-empty C1 open set of vector fields whose integrated flows do not have the shadowing property.

Abstract:Morales, Pacifico and Pujals proved recently that every robustly transitive singular set for a 3-dimensional flow must be partially hyperbolic. In this paper we generalize the result to higher dimensions. By definition, an isolated invariant set A of a C-1 vector field S is called robustly transitive if there exist an isolating neighborhood U of A in M and a C-1 neighborhood U of S in chi(1) (M) such that for every X is an element of U, the maximal invariant set of X in U is non-trivially transitive. Such a set A is called singular if it contains a singularity. The set A is called strongly homogeneous of index i, if there exist an isolating neighborhood U of A in M and a C-1 neighborhood U of S in chi(1) (M) such that all periodic orbits of all X is an element of U contained in U have the same index i. We prove in this paper that any robustly transitive singular set that is strongly homogeneous must be partially hyperbolic, as long as the indices of singularities and periodic orbits fit in certain way. As corollaries we obtain that every robust singular attractor (or repeller) that is strongly homogeneous must be partially hyperbolic and, if dim M <= 4, every robustly transitive singular set that is strongly homogeneous must be partially hyperbolic. The main novelty of the proofs in this paper is an extension of the usual linear Poincare flow "to singularities".

Abstract:Let X be a C 1 vector field on a compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold M (dim M ≥ 2), and Λ a compact invariant set of X. Suppose that Λ has a hyperbolic splitting, i.e., T Λ M = E s ⊕〈X〉⊕E u with E s uniformly contracting and E u uniformly expanding. We prove that if, in addition, Λ is chain transitive, then the hyperbolic splitting is continuous, i.e., Λ is a hyperbolic set. In general, when Λ is not necessarily chain transitive, the chain recurrent part is a hyperbolic set. Furthermore, we show that if the whole manifold M admits a hyperbolic splitting, then X has no singularity, and the flow is Anosov.

Abstract:We prove that every $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has either infinitely many sinks, or, infinitely many hyperbolic or singular-hyperbolic attractors whose basins form a full Lebesgue measure set. We also prove in the orientable case that the set of accumulation points of the sinks of a $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has no dominated splitting with respect to the linear Poincaré flow. As a corollary we obtain that every three-dimensional flow can be $C^1$ approximated by flows with homoclinic tangencies or by singular-Axiom A flows.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that in a compact manifold of dimension n ≥2, C 1+ α volume-preserving diffeomorphisms that are robustly transitive in the C 1 -topology have a dominated splitting. Also we prove that for three-dimensional compact manifolds, an isolated robustly transitive invariant set for a divergence-free vector field cannot have a singularity. In particular, we prove that robustly transitive divergence-free vector fields in three-dimensional manifolds are Anosov. For this, we prove a ‘pasting’ lemma, which allows us to make perturbations in conservative systems.

Abstract:We consider a closed manifold M with a Riemannian metric g(t) evolving in direction -2S(t) where S(t) is a symmetric two-tensor on (M,g(t)). We prove that if S satisfies a certain tensor inequality, then one can construct a forwards and a backwards reduced volume quantity, the former being non-increasing, the latter being non-decreasing along the flow. In the case where S=Ric is the Ricci curvature of M, the result corresponds to Perelman's well-known reduced volume monotonicity for the Ricci flow. Some other examples are given in the second section of this article, the main examples and motivation for this work being List's extended Ricci flow system, the Ricci flow coupled with harmonic map heat flow and the mean curvature flow in Lorentzian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvatures. With our approach, we find new monotonicity formulas for these flows.

Abstract:Let $f$ and $g$ be two volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on the cube $Q=[0,1]^{\nu}$, $\nu \geq 3$. We show that there is a divergence-free vector field $v \in L^1((0,1);L^p(Q))$ such that $v$ connects $f$ and $g$ through the corresponding flow and $\Vert v \Vert_{L^1_t L^p_x} \leq C_{p,\nu} \Vert f- g \Vert_{L^p_x}$. In particular we show Shnirelman's inequality, cf. [Shnirelman, Generalized fluid flows, their approximation and applications (1994)], for the optimal Hölder exponent $\alpha =1$, thus proving that the metric on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of $Q$ is equivalent to the $L^2$-distance. To achieve this, we discretise our problem, use some results on flows in discrete networks and then construct a flow in non-discrete space-time out of the discrete solution.

Entropy of Singular Suspensions

Abstract:In this work, we investigate diffeomorphisms whose positiveness of topological entropy is destroyed by singular suspensions. We show that this phenomenon is rare in the set of $C^1$-diffeomorphisms. Precisely, we prove that for an open and dense set of $C^1$-diffeomorphism positive topological entropy is preserved by singular suspensions, even for suspensions with infinitely many singularities. We prove a similar result to the conservative diffeomorphisms. We apply our techniques to show that every expansive singular suspension $C^{1+\epsilon}$-flow over a three-dimensional manifold has positive topological entropy. Finally, we explore this phenomenon for Anosov dynamics, showing that to nullify the topological entropy for Anosov suspension flow, the set of singularities must capture the non-wandering set.

Abstract:We study the C stability conjecture of Palis and Smale [PS] for flows in this paper. Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. For each r 1, let X(M) denote the set of C vector fields of M, endowed with the C topology. Every S # X(M) generates a C r flow ,=, : M_R R. We say S is C structurally stable if S has a C neighborhood U in X(M) such that every X # U generates a flow , that is topologically equivalent to ,. As usual, two flows are topologically equivalent if there is a homeomorphism h : M M that maps the orbits of one flow onto those of the other flow while preserving the orientation. Thus C structural stability implies C structural stability, when both make sense. In [PS] Palis and Smale conjectured that S is C structurally stable if and only if S satisfies Axiom A plus the strong transversality condition (see below for definitions). The ``if '' part was proved first for r 2 by Robbin [R], and then for r=1 by Robinson [Rs1]. The ``only if '' part was reduced by Robinson [Rs2] to proving that C structural stability implies Axiom A, which has been known as the C stability conjecture. Unlike the ``if '' part, the first target for studying the C stability conjecture is the case of r=1, i.e., the C stability conjecture. The case of r 2 is beyond our knowledge as discussed in [M2], and will not be considered in the present paper. The C stability conjecture has attracted attention for a long time. Abstract:We show that a simply-connected closed four-dimensional Ricci flow whose Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded below and whose volume does not approach zero must converge to a orbifold at any finite-time singularity, so has an extension through the singularity via orbifold Ricci flow. Moreover, a Type-I blowup of the flow based at any orbifold point converges to a flat cone in the Gromov–Hausdorff sense, without passing to a subsequence. In addition, we prove bounds for the curvature tensor on time-slices for any . In higher dimensions, we show that every singular point of the flow is a Type-II point, and that any tangent flow at a singular point is a static flow corresponding to a Ricci flat cone.

Convergence of the volume preserving fractional mean curvature flow for convex sets

Abstract:We prove that the volume preserving fractional mean curvature flow starting from a convex set does not develop singularities along the flow. By the recent result of Cesaroni-Novaga \cite{CN} this then implies that the flow converges to a ball exponentially fast. In the proof we show that the apriori estimates due to Cinti-Sinestrari-Valdinoci \cite{CSV2} imply the $C^{1+\alpha}$-regularity of the flow and then provide a regularity argument which improves this into $C^{2+\alpha}$-regularity of the flow. The regularity step from $C^{1+\alpha}$ into $C^{2+\alpha}$ does not rely on convexity and can probably be adopted to more general setting.

Abstract:In this work we study the existence of singular flows satisfying shadowing-like properties. More precisely, we prove that if C1 -vector field on a closed manifold induces a chain-recurrent flow containing an attached hyperbolic singularity of stable or unstable index-one, then this flow cannot satisfy the shadowing property. If the manifold is non-compact, the vector field is complete and non-wandering, we prove that we prove that the existence of index-one hyperbolic singularities prevents the induced flow to satisfy the rescaled-shadowing property introduced in [6].

Abstract:By a gradient-like flow on a closed orientable surface $M$, we mean a closed 1-form $\beta$ defined on $M$ punctured at a finite set of points (sources and sinks of $\beta$) such that there exists a Morse function $f$ on $M$, called an energy function of $\beta$, whose critical points coincide with equilibria of $\beta$, and the pair $(f,\beta)$ has a canonical form near each critical point of $f$. Let $\mathcal{B}=\mathcal{B}(\beta_0)$ be the space of all gradient-like flows on $M$ having the same types of local singularities as a flow $\beta_0$, and $\mathcal{F}=\mathcal{F}(f_0)$ the space of all Morse functions on $M$ having the same types of local singularities as an energy function $f_0$ of $\beta_0$. We prove that the spaces $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, equipped with $C^\infty$ topologies, are homotopy equivalent to some manifold $\mathcal{M}_s$, moreover their decompositions into $\mathrm{Diff}^0(M)$-orbits are given by two transversal fibrations on $\mathcal{M}_s$. Similar results are proved for topological equivalence classes on $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, and for non-Morse singularities.

Abstract:This note provides a detailed proof of the fact that a linear vector field on a vector bundle has a flow by vector bundle isomorphisms. It implies then easily the existence of global solutions to linear non-autonomous ODE's, with a standard time-dependent flow construction. As a further application, a simple proof of the smooth triviality of vector bundles over contractible bases is given. Finally, a detailed elementary proof of the isomorphy (as Lie algebras) of all fibers of the kernel of a transitive Lie algebroid is given.

Abstract:We show that every volume preserving codimension one Anosov flow on a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension greater than three admits a global cross section and is therefore topologically conjugate to a suspension of a linear toral automorphism. This proves a conjecture of Verjovsky from the 1970's in the volume preserving case.

Abstract:We apply conformal flows of metrics restricted to the orthogonal distribution $D$ of a foliation to study the question: Which foliations admit a metric such that the leaves are totally geodesic and the mixed scalar curvature is positive? Our evolution operator includes the integrability tensor of $D$, and for the case of integrable orthogonal distribution the flow velocity is proportional to the mixed scalar curvature. We observe that the mean curvature vector $H$ of $D$ satisfies along the leaves the forced Burgers equation, this reduces to the linear Schrödinger equation, whose potential function is a certain "non-umbilicity" measure of $D$. On order to show convergence of the solution metrics $g_t$ as $t\to\infty$, we normalize the flow, and instead of a foliation consider a fiber bundle $\pi: M\to B$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g_0)$. In this case, if the "non-umbilicity" of $D$ is smaller in a sense then the "non-integrability", then the limit mixed scalar curvature function is positive. For integrable $D$, we give examples with foliated surfaces and twisted products.
