Abstract:A new kind of 3D measurement system has been developed to achieve the 3D profile of complex object. The principle of measurement system is based on the triangular measurement of digital fringe projection, and the fringes are fully generated from computer. Thus the computer-generated four fringes form the data source of phase-shifting 3D profilometry. The hardware of system includes the computer, video camera, projector, image grabber, and VGA board with two ports (one port links to the screen, another to the projector). The software of system consists of grating projection module, image grabbing module, phase reconstructing module and 3D display module. A software-based synchronizing method between grating projection and image capture is proposed. As for the nonlinear error of captured fringes, a compensating method is introduced based on the pixel-to-pixel gray correction. At the same time, a least square phase unwrapping is used to solve the problem of phase reconstruction by using the combination of Log Modulation Amplitude and Phase Derivative Variance (LMAPDV) as weight. The system adopts an algorithm from Matlab Tool Box for camera calibration. The 3D measurement system has an accuracy of 0.05mm. The execution time of system is 3 similar to 5s for one-time measurement.

Abstract:We propose three-dimensional (3D) profilometry based on a Fourier transform in which a two-dimensional (2D) Dammann grating and a cylindrical lens are used to generate structured light. The Dammann grating splits most of the illumination power into a 2D diffractive spot matrix. The cylindrical lens transforms these 2D diffractive spots into one-dimensional fringe lines that are projected on an object. The produced projection fringes have the advantages of high brightness and high contrast and compression ratios. The experiments have verified the proposed 3D profilometry. The 3D profilometry using Dammann grating should be of high interest for practical applications. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A new three-dimensional (3D) profile measuring method which combines the atomic force microscopic (AFM) probe with the position sensitive detector (PSD) range probe is proposed. This method can obtain both the large size 3D profile and micro morphological character of a point on the sample. A dual-probe 3D profile measuring system is developed. The working principle is elaborated and the three parts of the system, the dual-probe, the step-controlled scanning stage and the computer controlling center are illuminated. The measuring range of the system is demarcated by measuring a known grating of 2000 line/mm. The 3D surface profile images in local morphology and entire profile of an annular gasket with inside and external diameter of 4 mm and 8 mm are given respectively. The experimental results show that this system is expected to be utilized both in large range measurement and local three-dimensional reconstruction with high-precision for samples which are of different sizes and materials.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel three-dimensional (3D) profilometry using a binocular camera and a 64 x 64 Dammann grating for generation of a regular square laser array. A new constraint called a "ray constraint," taking advantage of the splitting characteristic of Dammann grating, is proposed for binocular matching. Binocular matching is realized by using ray constraint and precalibration of a laser array. Point clouds without outliers are obtained with binocular matching results according to triangulation. The experimental apparatus weighs less than 170 g with a width of less than 14 cm. We used this apparatus to scan a statue of Apollo under indoor illumination (at 450 lux). Its 3D model with complex profile was reconstructed by more than 150,000 points. This 3D profilometry has advantages of low cost, low power, and small size and should be useful for practical applications. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:This paper proposes a flexible fast profilometry based on modulation measurement. Two orthogonal gratings through a beam splitter are vertically projected on an object surface, and the measured object is placed between the imaging planes of the two gratings. Then the image of the object surface modulated by the orthogonal gratings can be obtained by a CCD camera in the same direction as the grating projection. This image is processed by the operations consisting of performing the Fourier transform, spatial frequency filtering and inverse Fourier transform. Using the modulation distributions of two grating patterns, we can reconstruct the 3D shape of the object. In the measurement process, we only need to capture one fringe pattern, so it is faster than the MMP and remains the advantages of it. In the article, the principle of this method, the setup of the measurement system, some simulations and primary experiment results are given. The simulative and experimental result proves it can restore the 3D shape of the complex object fast and comparatively accurate. Because only one fringe pattern is needed in the testing, our method has a promising extensive application prospect in real-time acquiring and dynamic measurement of 3D data of complex objects.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3-D) shape measuring techniques, using a combination of grating projection and a most frequently used mathematical tool-Fourier fringe analysis, have been deeply researched and increasing in numbers. Such kind techniques are based on the idea of projecting and superposing a carrier fringe pattern onto the surface of the tested object, and then reconstructing its corresponding 3-D shape from the deformed fringe pattern modulated by the height of the tested object and captured by a camera from other view direction. This paper mainly reviews the basic principles and its typical applications of the combined technology based on grating projection and Fourier fringe analysis that we have developed over past ten years in the research field of dynamic 3-D shape measurement. Meanwhile, the advantages and challenges of this technique and the current development of real-time measurement in this research filed are also described as a discussion and conclusion in this paper.

Abstract:The composite Fourier transform profilometry (CFTP) has enlarged the measuring range by three times by using of the phase-shifting technique. When it is used to measure the discontinuous object,the single modulation frequency can't satisfy the different frequencies requirement for phase unwrapping and phase calculation accuracy. A dual-frequency composite grating which contains two modulation frequencies is proposed in this paper. Compared with the CFTP, the phase calculation accuracy is improved because the lower frequency is used to guide the unwrapping process of the higher frequency; the overlapping degree of Fourier spectrum between the AC components in the adjacent carrier channels is lowered; the measuring range is enlarged three times as the n shifting technique is used. Both numerical simulation and experiment have verified the feasibility and validity of the proposed method.

A New Method Of 3-D Profiles Connection

Abstract:In order to measure the 360degrees geometry profile of complicated object, a novel method to implement the connection of measured object's 3-D profiles is proposed. In the grating projection profilometry, when the measured object is rotated round X-axis, object's 3-D profiles corresponding with different rotating angle can be gotten. In our method, the above profiles data in the respective single-view coordinate system are firstly transformed into the data in the same coordinate system by transform matrix which is derived from translation matrix and rotation matrix; a new "mask matrix method" is also proposed and employed to connect the transformed profiles data into the 360degrees profile of object. Experiment results show that the present method can get 360degrees profile of the measured object fast and better, in which only four object's 3-D profiles corresponding with four rotating angle, namely 0degrees 90degrees 180degrees 270degrees are proceeded. It can measure the geometry profile not only of the continuous shape but also of the discontinuous shape.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new single-shot three-dimensional (3D) measuring method based on quaternary grating projection. In traditional binary grating phase measuring profilometry (PMP), a multi-step or color fringe pattern are usually used to extract the sinusoidal fringes. In our proposed method, by using the DLP4500’s 2-bit gray coding mode, the grayscale is quaternary. The three non-zero grayscales cyclically arranged in equal width, and the fourth grey value is 0 which is not encoded in the fringe pattern but represents the shadow information in the deformed pattern, where a quaternary grating is encoded. When the DLP4500 projects the quaternary grating onto the measured object, the charge coupled device (CCD) captures the corresponding deformed pattern synchronously. Three frames of binary deformed patterns with 1/3 duty cycle and a relative displacement of 1/3 period can be decomposed by the segmentation algorithm proposed in this paper. Three sinusoidal deformed patterns with a 2π/3 shift-phase can be obtained by extracting the fundamental frequency of the three binary deformed patterns correspondingly, and the 3D shape of the object can be reconstructed by PMP. Experimental results show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method. Because the DLP4500 only needs 2-bit coded grating for projection, the refresh rate of the projected grating is as high as 1428 Hz, which will have a broad application prospect in real time and fast online measurement.

Abstract:This paper summarized our work on three-dimensional optical technologies using Dammann gratings, e. g., three-dimnensional Dammann gratings, three dimensional imaging using a Dammann grating, etc.. We developed three-dimensional Dammann grating which can produce three-dimensional array with equal distance and equal intensity with a high-numerical-aperture lens. As we know, a lens usually has a single focal point. Fresnel zone plate can generate several axial focal points, but the intensity between them is unequal. By introducing the concept of Dammann grating into the circular phase plate, we invented Dammann zone plate(DZP) which can produce a series of axial focal points with equal intensity. Combining DZP with a Dammann grating, three-dimensional Dammann array will be generated, which is highly interesting for various applications.We also built a three-dimensional measuring system using a Dammann grating, with two cameras as the right eye and right eye, respectively. We used a 64x64 Dammann grating for generation of a square array of light spots for parallel capturing the three-dimensional profile of an object. The two cameras and the illuminating part are packaged together. After scanning the object, its three-dimensional profile will be obtained. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of this technique.

Abstract:A new method for improving the measuring precision in real-time three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement by optimizing structural parameters of composite grating is proposed. By analyzing the formation mechanism of composite grating, in which three phase-shifting sinusoidal gratings with equal phase-shifts 2π/3 are modulated by three carrier gratings with different carrier frequencies along the orthogonal direction respectively, it is found that the measuring precision can be improved by optimizing the period of phase-shifting sinusoidal gratings inside the composite grating when the frequencies of carrier gratings are selected properly. Three typical surfaces (cone, peaks-function, saddle) are selected according to the complexity of the measured object to design optimized composite gratings. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the measuring precision in real-time 3D shape measurement.

Abstract:As an important means to obtain three-dimensional depth information of target, optical measurement has been widely used in face recognition, machine manufacturing, aerospace and other related fields in the past decades. Optical three-dimensional imaging and depth measurement is a fast and non-contact method for reconstructing three-dimensional imaging and depth measurement of objects based on optical means and digital image processing analysis. In this paper, a three-dimensional measurement module of transversely rotating combined Dammann grating is proposed, which generates interleaved high-density dot-matrix structured light for three-dimensional imaging and measurement. The measurement module consists of integrated components of laser and beam expander, collimating lens, four transversely rotating combined Dammann gratings with different beam splitting ratios, and objective lens. The laser emits a laser beam which is collimated by a collimating lens. Four Dammann gratings are used to generate four non-staggered dot-matrix by splitting them, and then the high-density staggered projection dot-matrix for three-dimensional measurement and imaging are projected by the objective lens. The measurement module has the advantages of simple structure, high output dot-matrix density, staggered projection dot-matrix edges, and easy integration into mobile devices. This technology may reduce the complexity, number of optical elements, power consumption and cost of structured light projectors in mobile and fixed 3D sensors.

Abstract:The present study proposes a new method for measuring the surface shape of an object using elliptically pattern grating projection. Based on phase measuring profilometry (PMP), elliptically pattern grating is projected on the surface of the object to measure its shape in 3D. The computing formula for solving the phase by the phase-shifting fringe method is derived, and the 3D shape formula for the altitude is reestablished. The error-contrastive analysis of the object's surface shape is re-established based on the proposed method and traditional PMP. The proposed method was shown to have a strong anti-noise ability and able to measure objects under high noise. More accurate measurement results were obtained by computer simulation and experiment to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:3-D profilometry is one of the most important branches of measurement science and technology. In this paper, a new colorful 3-D imaging method using near-infrared (NIR) laser (850 nm) dot array generated by a Dammann grating is proposed. Two NIR cameras mounted with narrowband passed filters are adopted to capture laser patterns on objects. A color camera mounted with an infrared cutoff filter is adopted to capture color information. A simplified multiviews' matching method for dot array, which is the key of this 3-D imaging system, is proposed. A new geometric constraint named ray constraint is applied to multiview matching with the help of precalibration of laser dot array. Point clouds with color information are obtained according to triangulation. We used the experimental apparatus to scan a colorful plane with colorful attachments on it, and its colorful point clouds (about 56 000 sample points) were obtained. Experiments demonstrate that this apparatus achieves a depth accuracy of 0.21 mm at the measuring distance of 300 mm. This new colorful 3-D imaging has advantages of low cost, low power consumption, flexible structure, and portability, which should be highly interesting for practical applications.
