Abstract:The quartz veins with primary fluorapatite, xenotime-(Y), monazite-(Ce) to monazite-(Nd), uraninite, and secondary florencite-(Ce) and goyazite occur in Lower Devonian metavolcano-sedimentary sequence of the Gelnica Group, Gemeric Superunit, the Central Western Carpathians (eastern Slovakia). They represent an example of hydrothermal REE–U mineralization. Fluorapatite forms parallel bands of columnar crystals (≤ 3 cm) in massive quartz. Monazite(Ce) to (Nd) shows a near end-member composition with very small amounts of cheralite and huttonite components. Widespread xenotime-(Y) forms colloform aggregates or irregular aggregates in association with fluorapatite and monazite. Uraninite electron-microprobe U–Pb dating gave the average age of 207 ± 2 Ma (n = 16, 2σ), which is consistent with formation of the U mineralization in the Gemeric Superunit (e.g., Kuriskova uranium deposit) during early Alpine hydrothermal activity.

Abstract:Multi-stage formation of tourmaline occurs in the Hnilec granite-related hydrothermal tin mineralisation system from the Western Carpathians, Slovakia. The tourmalines belong to the schorl–dravite series and have two major stages of formation: the majority crystallized during the first stage (defined as M-stage), forming zoned tourmaline crystals with the cores being generally more Fe, Al, and Mn rich than the rims. During the second stage (defined as L-stage), tourmaline formed as small veins or irregular patches along fractures and cracks in the M-stage tourmaline grains. In the contact metapelites near the granite body, the L-stage tourmalines are more Mg-rich and Fe, Al, Mn depleted than the M-stage tourmalines. In the granites, the L-stage tourmalines have generally similar compositions to those of the M-stage tourmaline rims. The boron isotopic compositions of the M-stage tourmalines vary from −10.3‰ to −15.4‰; with no clear variation between the cores and the rims, however, some of the tourmaline grains from the contact metapelites show a slightly higher δ11B in the cores than in the rims. The L-stage tourmalines have lower δ11B value of −16.0‰ to −17.1‰. We suggest that these trends reflect a changing fluid source from a dominant magmatic–hydrothermal fluid derived from the granites to a late-stage metamorphic fluid derived from the regional metamorphism (chlorite and biotite zone) in the metapelites. The significantly higher Fe3+ in the L-stage than the M-stage tourmalines reflect changing redox conditions towards a more oxidising environment. This redox condition change may have important implications for the hydrothermal tin mineralisation in the area.

Abstract:Abundant tourmaline occurs in the Lavicky leucogranite, Czech Republic as spherical to ovoid quartz-tourmaline orbicules, typically 5 to 7 cm in diameter. The tourmalines also occur as fine-grained quartz-tourmaline veins (< I cm thick) that cut the orbicule-rich granite. Electron microprobe analyses reveal that tourmaline from the quartz-tourmaline orbicules is Fe-rich schorl with a range of Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratio 0.62 to 0.77 and Na/(Na+Ca) ratio 0.82 to 0.95. In contrast, tourmaline from quartz-tourmaline veins is Mg-rich dravite with a range of Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratio 0.23 to 0.45 and Na/(Na+Ca) ratio 0.67 to 0.90. Very low 611 B values of -37.3 to -32.1parts per thousand are found in the tourmalines front the orbicules, whereas tourmalines front the veins display relatively higher delta(11)B values of -28.2 to -21.3parts per thousand. The overall large delta(11)B variation is suggested to reflect mixing of different boron sources and boron isotope fractionation during magmatic degassing and magmatic-hydrothermal evolution at late solidus to early subsolidus stages of granite crystallization. Only non-marine evaporites show very negative delta(11)B values (<-20parts per thousand) in all natural boron reservoirs, hence, the very low delta(11)B values of the quartz-tourmaline orbicules likely indicate a major contribution of boron from non-marine evaporites that probably exist in the magma Source regions or assimilated into the magma during its ascent. Quartz-tourmaline orbicules may have formed during a transition from magmatic to hydrothermal processes, whereas the vein tourmalines formed by mixing of the exsolved magmatic-hydrothermal fluids with an external fluid rich in Ca and Mg and having higher delta(11)B than the exsolved magmatic fluids.
Mineralogy and Origin of Vein Wolframite Mineralization from the Pohled Quarry, Havlíčkův Brod Ore District, Czech Republic: Interaction of Magmatic and Basinal Fluids

Abstract:Mineralogy and formation conditions were studied in a newly found vein wolframite mineralization, cutting migmatitized paragneisses in the exocontact of a small Carboniferous granite body in the Pohled quarry, Moldanubian Zone of the Bohemian Massif, Czech Republic. The early stage of the rich mineral assemblage (36 mineral species) involves wolframite, columbite-group minerals, molybdenite, and scheelite hosted by quartz–muscovite–chlorite gangue, which was followed by base-metal sulfides in a quartz gangue, whereas the last stage included calcite gangue with fluorite and minor sulfides. The mineral assemblage points to the mobility of usually hardly soluble elements, including W, Sn, Zr, Nb, Th, Ti, Sc, Y, and REEs. A fluid inclusion study indicates a significant decrease in homogenization temperatures from 350–370 °C to less than 100 °C during vein formation. Fluids were aqueous, with a low salinity (0–12 wt. % NaCl eq.) and traces of CO2, N2, CH4, H2, and C2H6. The δ18O values of the fluids giving rise to quartz and scheelite are positive (min. 4‰–6‰ V-SMOW). The Eh and pH of the fluid also changed during evolution of the vein. Both wolframite and columbite-group minerals are anomalously enriched in Mg. We suggest that the origin of this distinct mineralization was related to the mixing of Mo,W-bearing granite-derived magmatic fluids with external basinal waters derived from contemporaneous freshwater (but episodically evaporated) piedmont basins. The basinal waters infiltrated into the subsurface along fractures formed in the extensional tectonic regime, and their circulation continued even after the ending of the activity of magmatic fluids. The studied wolframite mineralization represents the most complete record of the 'hydrothermal' history of a site adjacent to a cooling granite body in the study area. Moreover, there are broad similarities in the mineral assemblages, textures, and chemical compositions of individual minerals from other occurrences of wolframite mineralization around the Central Moldanubian Plutonic Complex, pointing to the genetic similarities of the Variscan wolframite-bearing veins in this area.

Abstract:Agate veins and nodules occur in the Lece Volcanic Complex (Oligocene-Miocene) situated in the south of Serbia and occupying an area of 700 km2. This volcanic complex is composed predominantly of andesites, with sporadic occurrences of andesite-basalts, dacites and latites, and features agate formations that have been very little investigated. This study focuses on five selected agate occurrences within the Lece Volcanic Complex, employing optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In three localities (Rasovača, Mehane, and Ždraljevići), agate mineralization is directly related to distinct fault zones with strong local brecciation. In the other two localities (Vlasovo and Sokolov Vis), the agate is found in nodular form and does not show any connection with fracture zones. The silica phases of the Lece volcanic agates consist of cristobalite and tridymite, length-fast chalcedony, quartzine (length-slow chalcedony), and macrocrystalline quartz. Vein agates show a frequent alternation between length-fast chalcedony and quartz bands. Nodular agates consist primarily of length-fast chalcedony, occasionally containing notable quantities of opal-CT, absent in vein agates. Microtextures present in vein agates include crustiform, colloform, comb, mosaic, flamboyant, and pseudo-bladed. Jigsaw puzzle quartz microtexture supports the recrystallization of previously deposited silica in the form of opal or chalcedony from hydrothermal fluids. Growth lines in euhedral quartz (Bambauer quartz) point to agate formations in varying physicochemical conditions. These features indicate epithermal conditions during the formation of hydrothermal vein agates. Due to intense hydrothermal activity, vein agate host rocks are intensively silicified. Vein agates are also enriched with typical ore metallic elements (especially Pb, Co, As, Sb, and W), indicating genetic relation with the formation of polymetallic ore deposits of the Lece Volcanic Complex. In contrast, nodular agates have a higher content of major elements of host rocks (Al2O3, MgO, CaO, Na2O, and K2O), most probably mobilized from volcanic host rocks. Organic matter, present in both vein and nodular agate with filamentous forms found only in nodular agate, suggests formation in near-surface conditions.

Abstract:Tourmaline occurs widely within Dayishan ore field, Nanling Range, and is associated with magmatic-hydrothermal rare metal mineralization. Four types of tourmaline are recognized: (1) tourmaline in coarse-grained monzogranite (Tur-G1); (2) tourmaline in medium-fine-grained monzogranite (Tur-G2); (3) tourmaline aggregates associated with muscovite in greisen (Tur-Gr), showing a yellow core (Tur-Gry) and blue rim (Tur-Grb); and (4) quartz-vein-hosted tourmaline (Tur-V). In this study, we performed systematic investigations of in situ boron isotopic and elemental compositions of tourmalines in different granite, greisen, and quartz veins by EPMA and LA-MC-ICP-MS. Results show that almost all tourmalines exhibit schorl compositional affinity with extremely low Ca contents, high Fe/(Fe+Mg), and the calculated X-site occupancies in tourmalines show their affinities to the alkali group. Substitution processes of major element variations are dominantly caused by MgFe-1, FeAl-1, (Ca,Mg)((-1),Al-2), and R(Na,Mg)(-1) exchange vectors. Based on geochemistry and petrology, Tur-G1, Tur-G2, and Tur-Gry precipitated from a boron-rich melt, while Tur-Grb and Tur-V crystallized from hydrothermal fluid. Many trace element concentrations overlap and most are <10 ppm. The significantly higher contents of Sn and Zn and positive Eu anomaly reflect the influence of an external fluid. Magmatic tourmalines fall into a narrow range of delta B-11 values between -15.58 and -14.09 parts per thousand, indicating a single boron source of the granitic magma. Hydrothermal tourmalines display slightly lighter B isotopic compositions (-16.31 to -14.91 parts per thousand), which are consistent with precipitation from externally derived fluids with lighter boron. Based on the isotopic and chemical compositional evidence, Sn and Zn may come from the host rock rather than granite.

Abstract:The Ploučnice River region (polzenite group) is uniquely characterized by its melilite-bearing subvolcanic rocks located in the northern section of the Bohemian Massif. They are the crystallization products of ultracalcic melts during the pre-rift evolution of the Ohře/Eger Rift, which is the easternmost part of the European Cenozoic Rift System. The melt was produced by low-degree partial melting of carbonate-bearing garnet peridotite and pyroxenite at a depth of approximately 100 km (P ~ 3.0 Gpa). The rapid ascent of the ultracalcic melts through the lithosphere was accompanied by fractional crystallization of olivine + spinel ± clinopyroxene mainly within the upper to middle crustal storage zone at depths between 12 and 24 km (0.3–0.6 Gpa). Notably, olivine crystallized generally at higher temperatures (1257–1356 °C) compared to clinopyroxene (1156–1203 °C) and plagioclase (1099–1112 °C). The calculated oxygen fugacity during fractional crystallization (perovskite, −4.8 to +3.9 ΔNNO) decreases at the late-stage of crystallization due to residual magma exsolving oxidizing fluids and decreased fO 2 (oxygen fugacity) of the magmas from which monticellite was crystallized (ΔNNO −6.0 to −3.9). The rounded shapes and chemical composition (Cr/(Cr + Al) 0.52–0.82) of partially resorbed chromite xenocrystic cores in subhedral to euhedral spinel grains indicate that they originated in the mantle. The first stage of magmatic evolution for the studied rocks is related to the Cr-spinel (Cr/(Cr + Al) 0.35–0.50) crystallization, which successively changed to a high-alumina composition (Cr/(Cr + Al) 0.25–0.30). Magnetite (magnetite–ulvöspinel solid solution) forms an atoll texture or small euhedral crystals in the groundmass. Both textural types of magnetite crystallized during the late-stage magmatic evolution of the ultracalcic melt. Carbonate or quartz-rich xenoliths were incorporated during magma emplacement under the upper crust. SrNd isotopic data, mineral composition, and whole-rock chemical composition all verified that the assimilation of the xenoliths only affected the chemical composition of the host magma in the immediate neighborhood of the contract (up to a few millimeters around the xenolith).

Abstract:Tin-dominant polymetallic mineralization in the Dachang district is tempo-spatially related to the Late Cretaceous Longxianggai granitic pluton. Three types of tourmaline in the Longxianggai granitic pluton have been identified in this study : 1 ) subhedral disseminated tourmaline in the granite matrix (DT-type) ; 2) subhedral to anhedral tourmaline in the quartz-tourmaline nodule (NT-type) ; and 3) tourmaline aggregates in the quartz vein (VT-type). We performed major and trace element analysis by electron microprobe (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) on these tourmaline crystals. Compositionally, these tourmalines are characterized by high Fe/(Fe + Mg) and Na/(Na + Ca) ratios, and belong to the alkali group and schorl-dravite solid solution series. The DT-type tourmaline is interstitial between grains of plagioclase, K-feldspar, quartz and biotite, formed during the late stage of granite consolidation. With fractionation of granitic magma, DT-type tourmaline is progressively enriched in Li, F, Fe and Sn. The early-stage NT-1 tourmaline has lower Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios but higher concentrations of V, Co and Sr compared to those of DT-type tourmalin, which could be attributed to tourmaline replacement of early biotite and feldspar. By contrast, the late-stage NT-2 tourmaline is characterized by variable compositions (e. g. , Li, F, Mg, Al, V, Fe and Zn) , consistent with the speculation of hydrothermal origin. The VT-type tourmaline has relatively high Fe/(Fe + Mg) and Na/(Na + Ca) ratios, and similar trace element compositions to those of NT-type tourmaline. Almost all of analyzed tourmalines have comparable Sn concentrations to those of tourmalines from other Sn-bearing granites. However, the absence of further Sn enrichment in VT-type tourmaline in the Dachang district possibly implies the restricted partition of ore-forming elements into early hydrothermal fluids which contribute to tourmaline-quartz veins.
Detrital Tourmalines in the Cretaceous–Eocene Julian and Brkini Flysch Basins (SE Alps, Italy and Slovenia)

Abstract:In the SE Alps, two Cretaceous–Eocene flysch basins, Julian and Brkini, filled with turbidite sediments, are present. This study novelly reports heavy mineral assemblage counts and detrital tourmaline characterization for 11 samples. It is possible to define three different groups, characterized by the presence of (1) a clinopyroxene–epidote–low-ZTR (zircon+tourmaline+rutile; 5%) sample association, (2) a high-ZTR (>48%)–garnet–apatite association and (3) a low-ZTR (<40%)–Cr-spinel–garnet association. Detrital tourmalines from both the Julian and Brkini flysch basins are rather similar in composition, associated with metapelites and metapsammites coexisting or not coexisting with an Al-saturating phase, ferric-iron-rich quartz–tourmaline rocks and calc–silicate rocks; however, their number is drastically different. In fact, even if the percentage of heavy minerals is very low and similar in both basins (0.17–1.34% in weight), in the Julian basin, the number of tourmaline crystals is much lower than that in Brkini (1–14 vs. 30–100), suggesting an important change in the provenance area. Interestingly, the presence of a high amount of tourmaline derived from ferric-iron-rich quartz–tourmaline rocks and calc–silicate rocks makes these two basins different from all the Cretaceous flysch basins of Bosnia and the Northern Dinaric zone, where these supplies are missing or very limited.

Abstract:Abundant tourmaline occurs in the Mopanshan pluton in Inner Mongolia of NE China, and can be classified by its occurrence into four types: nodular tourmalines (ND type), pegmatite-pocket tourmalines (PP type), stockwork tourmalines (SW type) and vein tourmalines (VT type). All these tourmalines belong to the alkali group and are dravite-schorl. Petrography and major elements data suggest that the ND- and PP-type tourmalines crystallized during the transition from late-magmatic to early-hydrothermal evolution of granite with all the components derived from the magma. Petrography and trace elements (especially Sr, V, Cr, Ni, Ti) data suggest that the SW- and VT-type tourmalines may form by the mixing of magmatic and country rocks components in the post-magmatic hydrothermal environment. Due to the similar 5116 of the SW-type with the ND- and PP-type tourmalines (variation <2 parts per thousand, and all averaged at -15.8 parts per thousand), the boron source of the SW-type tourmalines is likely the same as the ND- and PP-type ones, i.e., from the granitic magma. The VT-type tourmalines have extremely negative delta B-11 values from -27.0 parts per thousand to 29.8 parts per thousand, indicating a distinct and isotopically lighter boron source. The potential presence of non-marine evaporites (with very light boron isotopes) in the meta-sedimentary strata deep in the region may contribute boron to the VT-type tourmalines. The high Sn contents in the tourmalines, in particular the SW-type (918-2172 ppm) may have prospecting significance to target tin mineralization related to granite in the region. Abstract:This paper reports trace-element, rare-earth element (REE) and boron isotopic compositions of tourmaline in the Asarck granitoid and quartz veins at Sebinkarahisar. Abundant tourmaline occurs in the vein-type Pb-Zn-Cu +/- U deposit, within the northeastern Pontide Metallogenic Belt, both within the Late Cretaceous Asarck granitoid and in associated quartz-tourmaline veins. Tourmaline in the granitoid forms as rosettes up to 1.5cm in diameter, whereas in quartz-tourmaline veins a few centimetres to a few metres wide, it occurs as black needles and masses that cut the pluton. We present a systematic geochemical study of these tourmalines - all of the schorl-dravite series. Tourmalines from the quartz veins contain high concentrations of ore metals such as Ag, Bi and Zn and have higher Sr, Cr and Sn contents than tourmalines in the Asarck granitoid. Tourmalines from intensively altered parts of the pluton are characterized by higher concentrations of trace elements such as Ba, Rb, V, Sc, Th and Zr compared with occurrences in the quartz veins and in the fresh and less-altered granitoid. Chondrite-normalized patterns of REEs in tourmalines from the Asarck granitoid are generally similar to those of tourmalines in the quartz veins. All vein tourmalines, however, are characterized by heavy REE enrichments, in sharp contrast to those in the granitoid. Boron isotopic compositions of tourmalines range from -14.0 to -2.2 parts per thousand and fall within the 11B range of this mineral in granite-related settings. Tourmaline rosettes from the Asarck granitoid show relatively lighter 11B values (-14.0 to -12.2 parts per thousand) in comparison with those in the quartz veins (-10.4 to -2.2 parts per thousand).
Tourmaline Compositions from the Salikvan Porphyry Cu-Mo Deposit and Vicinity, Northeastern Turkey

Abstract:Tourmaline-bearing rocks occur in the Pontide volcanic island are of northeastern Turkey, which hosts numerous small- to medium-sized Cu-Pb-Zn and Cu-Mo deposits. Weakly developed porphyry-style Cu-Mo mineralization accompanies the calcalkaline volcano-plutonic rocks of Salikvan, in southwestern Artvin. Various types of tourmaline have been analyzed chemically, of which three main environments of formation are identified: (1) quartz-tourmaline veins, (2) tonalite porphyry and, to a lesser extent, coarse granodiorite, and (3) tourmaline-rich rocks at the contacts of coarse granodiorite and basic volcanic rocks. Electron-microprobe data indicate that the tourmaline is relatively ferrous and calcic, and shows a general trend from dravite to uvite end-members; the tourmaline at Salikvan formed by the reaction of Fe-rich hydrothermal fluids with Ca-rich amphibole and plagioclase in tonalite porphyry and granodiorite. The dominant variability in composition seems controlled by the exchange vector CaMgO rectangle(-1)AL(1)(OH)(-1). Tourmaline in quartz-tourmaline veins has moderate Fe/(Fe + Mg) values (0.37-0.51; mean 0.43), whereas that in tonalite porphyry is rich in iron, with a Fel(Fe + Mg) of 0.45-0.53 (mean 0.48). Tourmaline in tourmaline-rich rocks is relatively rich in magnesium, with a Fe/(Fe + Mg) of 0.30-0.46 (mean 0.39). Trace-element contents of the tourmalines are low relative to those in tourmaline from massive sulfide deposits. Tourmaline has a tendency to scavenge trace elements during crystallization, yielding correlations among Ag -(Au, Li, Mo, P, Pb, Sb, V, W), Au - (P, Pb, Sb, V, W), Li -(P, Pb, Sb, v, W), Mo -(Pb, Sb, V), P -(Sb, V, W), Sb - (V, W), Co -(Cr, Mn), Pb -(Sb, V), Ba-Sr, Zn-Cu, V-W, and Cr-Mn. Chondrite normalized patterns of the rare-earth elements point out the possible contribution of hydrothermal processes to tourmaline formation. Boron isotope analyses of tourmaline from quartz-tourmaline veins and tourmaline from tourmaline-rich rocks have delta(11)B values of -9.4 and -9.0 parts per thousand, respectively, consistent with late-magmatic hydrothermal fluids.
Tourmaline As a Recorder of Magmatic–hydrothermal Evolution: an in Situ Major and Trace Element Analysis of Tourmaline from the Qitianling Batholith, South China

Abstract:Four types of tourmaline in the Qitianling granitic batholith, South China, were identified in this study: euhedral disseminated tourmaline (DT type) in the early stage of granite consolidation; typical interstitial nodular tourmaline (NT type) formed late in the crystallization history; radial tourmaline veinlet (RT type) and vein tourmaline (VT type) of hydrothermal origin. We performed major and trace element analysis by in situ electron microprobe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on these four tourmaline types. Compositionally, these tourmalines fall into the alkali group and schorl–dravite solid solution series. There is clear correlation between trace and major elements in VT-type tourmalines, likely related to co-variations of these elements in the hydrothermal fluid from which the tourmaline precipitated. Tourmaline from granites displays low REE abundances and negative LREE trends, positive Eu anomalies, and HREE below or close to their detection limits. The DT-type tourmalines show a positive Eu anomaly, which is probably due to a preferential incorporation of Eu2+ over Eu3+. REE depletion in NT-type tourmalines may reflect co-crystallization of REE-rich minerals. The positive Eu anomaly in NT-type tourmalines is due to late-stage release of Eu2+ caused by tourmaline replacement of early feldspar. Vein tourmalines (RT and VT type) display similar slopes from La to Nd, without an Eu anomaly. The chondrite-normalized REE patterns in tourmalines from veins display a concave upward-shaped, MREE-depleted pattern, with minimum values at Ho increasing steadily to Lu, and may reflect the REE characteristics of the precipitated medium. HREE enrichment in hydrothermal fluid can be attributed to the formation of REE-fluoride complexes during the internal fluid evolution.

Abstract:The Jiajika rare metal deposit contains the largest area of granitic pegmatite-type rare metal deposits in China. The X03 vein is an immense rare metal deposit dominated by lithium, which was found in the deposit in recent years. The contact metamorphic belt of tourmalinization and petrochemistry is widely developed in its wall rocks, and the altered rocks formed contain Li and other rare metal mineralization. In this paper, the tourmaline found in the different rocks of the Jiajika X03 vein is divided into four types: two-mica quartz schist (Tur-I), tourmaline hornfels (Tur-II), tourmaline-bearing granite pegmatite (Tur-III) and spodumene-bearing granite pegmatite (Tur-IV); their in situ major element, trace element and boron isotope data are systematically studied. The results show that all tourmalines in the Jiajika X03 vein deposit belong to the alkali group, and are schorl–Oxy/Fluor–schorl, dravite–Hydroxy-dravite and foitite–Oxy foitite solid solutions, among which Tur-I are dravite, Tur-II are foitite of hydrothermal origin and Tur-III and Tur-IV are schorl of magmatic origin. The boron isotope values show that the boron involved the formation process of tourmaline mainly originates from the Majingzi S-type granite, and the boron isotope variations in tourmaline are controlled by melt fluid and Rayleigh fractionation. Moreover, there is a clear correlation between the B isotope value of tourmaline and the Li, Mn, Zn, Mg, and V contents, showing that these contents in tourmaline are good indicators of the mineralization type of pegmatite.

Abstract:<p>This study examines five rock units related to the Tashisayi chrysoberyl-bearing granitic batholith, Altyn Tagh, NW China: biotite granite, two-mica granite, muscovite granite, granitic pegmatite, and the surrounding biotite plagiogneiss. Three types of tourmalines and quartz are described, occur in the biotite plagiogneiss (Tur-1, Qtz-1), granitic rocks (two-mica granite [Tur-2a, Qtz-2a] and muscovite granite [Tur-2b, Qtz-2b]), and granitic pegmatite (Tur-3 and Qtz-3; tourmaline and quartz coexisting with chrysoberyl). Zircon UPb dating of the muscovite granite and granitic pegmatite yielded ages of 490–486 Ma for the Tashisayi batholith.</p><p>The major-(by EPMA) and trace-element contents (by LA-ICP-MS) of the tourmaline and trace-elements (by LA-ICP-MS) and O-isotope (SIMS) of quartz indicates that: 1) The tourmalines are alkali schorl (Fe-rich tourmaline) and foitite; 2) tourmalines and quartz from the pegmatite have similar elemental concentrations and substitution mechanisms as tourmalines and quartz in granitic units of the Tashisayi batholith, but different from those of tourmalines and quartz in the biotite plagiogneiss, especially for Li, Be; 3) LA-ICP-MS analyses show that Qtz-1 in the biotite plagiogneiss has lower Ge/Ti values, lower Li, Be, Rb concentrations than Qtz-2a, Qtz-2b, and Qtz-3. Moreover, Qtz-2a, Qtz-2b, and Qtz-3 have a good positive correlation, consistent with whole-rock compositions, indicating crystal fractionation process in the formation of pegmatite, the chrysoberyl-bearing pegmatite is derived from a more evolved fluid than granitic rocks, thus, Li, Be are enriched by magmatism; 4) The O-isotopic compositions of Qtz-1 (+0.03 to +1.90‰) are consistent with a metamorphic water source, whereas the quartz in the two-mica granite (Qtz-2a; +8.85 to +9.58‰), in the muscovite granite (Qtz-2b; +9.27 to +9.93‰), and in the granitic pegmatite (Qtz-3; +14.8 to +17.8‰) are derived from the magmatic water or fluids from granite.</p>

Abstract:The Lingshan granite batholith (Jiangxi province, southeast China) is a rather unique example of Nb-Ta-rich rare-metal granite, and three different types of tourmalines have been identified in the marginal granite zone, including (i) quartz-tourmaline nodules (Tur-N type) in the fine-grained biotite granite, (ii) tourmaline segregations and/or tourmaline-filled cavities (Tur-P type) and (iii) tourmaline veins (Tur-PV type) in pegmatite dykes. The extensive fractional crystallization process from the fine-grained biotite granite to pegmatite has been revealed by the geochemical and boron isotope compositions from the Tur-N to the Tur-P and/or Tur-PV type tourmalines, such as increasing Fe contents, decreasing Nb/Ta and Zr/Hf ratios, as well as restricted boron isotopes (δ11B, −12.0 to −9.0‰). Particularly, the Nb and Ta contents increase from the Tur-N to the core of the Tur-P type tourmaline, and then decrease towards the rim of the Tur-P type tourmaline. It is, therefore, possible that the decreasing variations of Nb and Ta from the core to the rim within the Tur-P type tourmaline more likely record the compositional and environmental evolution from the late boron-rich magma to the exsolved hydrothermal fluids. The late-stage Tur-PV type tourmaline as the hydrothermal product contains the lowest F contents. Thus, we suggest that the NbTa mineralization in the Lingshan granite batholith dominantly occurs in the highly-evolved granitic melt rather than during the post-magmatic aqueous fluid. Furthermore, the Nb and Ta contents of Lingshan tourmaline overlap with previous reported tourmaline data from WSn rare-metal deposits instead of Au deposit. This signature is comparable to the fact that small volumes of WSn mineralization occur in the Songshugang Ta-Nb-(WSn) deposit. Hence, the Nb and Ta contents in tourmaline can be used as potential parameter to explore the Nb-Ta-(WSn) mineralization not only in the Lingshan granite and pegmatite but also in similar granite batholith elsewhere in the world.

Abstract:Beryllium mineralization was studied by EPMA and XRD techniques in the beryl-columbite pegmatite D6e from the Maršíkov District, Bohemian Massif, Czech Republic. A detailed study of microtextures in BSE images revealed a complex formation of fine-grained secondary Be-silicates at the expense of primary beryl and earlier secondary Be-minerals in the following proximal and distal assemblages: (A) primary magmatic beryl; (B) proximal secondary beryl; (C) proximal bertrandite + K-feldspar and minor muscovite, chamosite, gismondine-Ca and quartz; (D1) proximal assemblages of milarite + gismondine-Ca and bavenite-bohseite + epidote; (D2) distal assemblages on brittle tectonic cracks including milarite, bavenite-bohseite, albite, K-feldspar, quartz and rare phenakite, and (D3) epidote, bavenite-bohseite, quartz, albite, K-feldspar and minor milarite. A formation of secondary Mg,Fe,V,Na-enriched beryl (B) is connected with a mixing of residual (pegmatite) and external Ca,Mg,Fe,V-enriched fluids from the host amphibole gneiss at T ~ 300–400 °C and P ~ 200–400 MPa. The assemblage (C) formed due to an income of K,Mg,Ca-enriched fluids (residual + external) at T ~ 150–300 °C. The subsequent proximal (D1) and distal (D2, D3) assemblages formed during an moderate to strong income of Ca-rich external fluids from the host rocks related to retrograde hydrothermal-metamorphic overprint manifested by the Alpine-type hydrothermal veins. A common presence of epidote in the assemblages with bavenite-bohseite suggests crystallization at T < ~200–300 °C. Detailed textural and paragenetic study of primary and secondary Be-minerals is a useful tool to recognize and study various processes proceeded during subsolidus evolution of granitic pegmatites.

Abstract:The petrogenesis of regionally zoned granitic pegmatite veins remains debated. Because of the economic significance, we carried out a study on the Chakabeishan (CKBS) pegmatite-type Li-Be deposit, eastern North Qaidam Tectonic Belt, Northern Tibetan Plateau, by means of in-situ major element and B isotope compositions of tourmalines in the beryl-bearing and spodumene-bearing pegmatite veins. Tourmalines (Tur-Be) from the beryl-bearing pegmatite are homogeneous schorl with low Mg/(Mg + Fe), high Na/ (Na + Ca) and YAl, suggesting that they are of magmatic origin. Two generations of tourmalines (TurLi) from the spodumene-bearing pegmatite are identified: (i) the crystal cores (mostly elbaite and Lirich schorl with subordinate schorl) are consistent with being of magmatic origin crystallized at the magmatic stage; (ii) the crystal rims (schorl) are best understood as the overgrowth at the later hydrothermal stage. Tur-Be and Tur-Li show an obvious difference in core-to-rim B isotopic variation trend with d11B decrease in Tur-Be and increase in Tur-Li. The core-to-rim d11B decrease in Tur-Be results from degassing during its host pegmatitic melt evolution, whereas the core-to-rim d11B increase in Tur-Li is related to fluid exsolution. The estimated d11B values for the initial melts of the beryl-bearing and spodumenebearing pegmatites are -10.46% and -10.78%, respectively, indicating that they most likely originate from protracted fractional crystallization/differentiation of granitic intrusions rather than partial melting of metapelite. Both Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratios and Li abundances in the cores of Tur-Be are lower than those of Tur-Li, suggesting that Tur-Li crystallizes from chemically more evolved melts. Abstract:The geological map of the Klenov Pluton (Moldanubian Batholith), and its 3D visualization, brings the new findings in the context of granite emplacement within late-Variscan settings. The Klenov Pluton has a peraluminous composition resulting from partial melting of metasedimentary sources and subsequent differentiation. The new ages 327.14 ± 0.21 Ma and 327.80 ± 0.37 Ma, reflect the narrow time-span of magma emplacement and cooling. The 327 Ma Klenov Pluton was emplaced syntectonically as a 'sheet-like' granite intrusion at depth ca. 10 kilometers during the later stages of the Pelhřimov Core Complex exhumation (at ca. 329 to 327 Ma) associated with ∼N–S oriented compression. Gravity modelling suggests that the Klenov Pluton has an asymmetric shape where its western flank is parallel to the ∼NW moderately dipping Pelhřimov Core Complex. The eastern margin of the Pluton is shallower and has been later modified by ∼SE-side-up normal faulting (Lodhéřov Fault Zone).

Abstract:Tourmaline often occurs in boron-rich granites and its genesis is still in dispute either formed from residual boron-rich silicate melt or from magmatic hydrothermal fluids with or without external fluid involvement. Here, we present a systematic investigation of in-situ major, trace elemental and boron isotopic variations of tourmaline from the Sanfang granite in Guangxi Province of South China, which demonstrate both the magmatic and hydrothermal origin for the formation of the tourmalines. The tourmaline occurs mainly in quartz-tourmaline nodules and tourmaline pegmatitic segregations within the Sanfang granite. Four types of tourmaline are identified: (1) isolated and disseminated tourmaline (Tur-D type) distributed in granite; (2) euhedral and subhedral tourmaline in quartz-tourmaline nodules (Tur-N type); (3) the earlier stage tourmaline (Tur-PE type) in pegmatitic segregations and (4) the later stage tourmaline (Tur-PL type) which replaced the Tur-PE type tourmaline in pegmatitic segregations. All the tourmalines belong to the alkali group representing dravite-schorl solid solution series with the former three types being schorl and the Tur-PL type being dravite. Petrography, chemical discrimination diagrams and Al occupations in the Y-site suggest that the Tur-D, Tur-N and Tur-PE type tourmalines are of magmatic origin and the Tur-PL type tourmalines are of hydrothermal fluid origin. Elemental and boron isotopic composition variations of tourmalines reflect the compositional and environmental evolution from late boron-rich magma to exsolved hydrothermal fluids. Chemical variations from the Tur-D to the Tur-N tourmalines are controlled by magma differentiation. The increase of Mg/(Mg + Fe) and Ca/(Ca + Na) ratios from the Tur-N to the Tur-PE tourmalines suggests the contamination of surrounding strata (e.g. the Sibao Group). Hydrothermal tourmalines have higher Mg/(Mg + Fe) and lower Na/(Na + Ca) ratios than the magmatic tourmalines. There is clear correlation at least in some trace elements (e.g. Sr, Pb) with major elements for all tourmalines, indicating the potential crystal chemical effects on their incorporation. Other trace element incorporation in tourmaline is largely controlled by melt and fluid composition. Hydrothermal tourmalines have high and stable V, Co and Ni contents, indicating relatively constant partition coefficient between hydrothermal tourmalines and the fluid. Hydrothermal tourmalines exhibit lower total REE contents but more pronounced positive Eu anomalies than the magmatic tourmalines. The delta B-11 values of all tourmalines from the Sanfang granite vary from -14.4 parts per thousand to -9.3 parts per thousand, which indicate the boron in the Sanfang granite was mainly derived from partial melting of the metasedimentary source rocks. Boron isotopic variations of tourmaline are controlled by fractionation between melt-fluid and Rayleigh fractionation.
