Abstract:In this chapter, we focus on motion compensation in bistatic SAR. Motion compensation is an important and challenging issue for obtaining focused imagery from monostatic and bistatic SAR data. Due to fluctuations in the linear motion of the airborne SAR platform, the trace always deviates from an ideal straight line, which alters the regular phase history and causes defocusing in the resulting images. To clarify the motion error problem in bistatic SAR, we first consider the monostatic case, which is usually less complicated owing to a fewer number of error sources than in bistatic SAR, and because the effects deriving from the transmitter and the receiver can be separated directly. In this chapter, we consider the constant-offset mode as an example to study motion error in bistatic SAR. We present an attitude error model and a motion error model for both monostatic and bistatic SAR systems. A compensation strategy based on a single dominant scattering point in conjunction with inertial measurement units and the global positioning system is given in detail.
