Abstract:Users of tele-information services are demanding instant access, everywhere and anytime. Wireless communication systems offers mobility and flexibility while optical fiber based systems offer large bandwidth, secure and lower power consumption for transport of tele-communication signals. None of the two technologies separately can satisfy the demands of user for ubiquitous and affordable access to information services. Converged optical and wireless systems offer a solution that combines the best of both technologies. This article review the trends in converged optical-wireless communication systems and outline the role that photonic technologies is playing in making the vision of a converged network a reality.

Abstract:The rapid growth in network capacity and traffic rates raises the significance of high-speed optical transmission and processing. Recent progress in optical communication systems in relation to multiplexing technologies in different degrees of freedom, advanced multi-level modulation formats, coherent detection and digital signal processing has facilitated dramatic increases in transmission capacity. To be compatible with high-speed optical transmission, high- speed optical processing has gained increased interest to enable fast data manipulation in the optical domain and avoid cumbersome optical-electrical-optical conversions at network nodes. Recent progress in nonlinear-optical devices has led to enhanced efficiency, flexibility and functionality of ultrafast nonlinear-optical signal processing. It is expected that these advances in high-speed optical transmission and processing will pave the way to achieve superior performance of high-speed optical networks. It is our intention to bring the research community＇s attention to these hot topics in optical communication systems and networks. In this ＂Special Issue on High-Speed Optical Transmission and Processing＂, 8 review articles and 2 research articles focusing on relevant subjects by internationally active groups in the field are specially presented.

Abstract:The articles in this special section focus on advancements in optical communications and networking technologies (OCNS). OCNS has been playing an increasingly important role in interconnecting a large variety of IT resources over globally distributed autonomous network systems, to facilitate cost-effective information exchange and data processing. In 2018, with the emergence of fifth generation (5G)-oriented optical transmission and access networks, we witnessed optical communication networks becoming more adaptive and reconfigurable to support dynamic optical service provisioning, protection, and restoration, and to deliver short time to market and cost-effective services and solutions. Following this trend, we expect to observe continued expansion of optical transmission and access networks and faster convergence of optical and wireless infrastructures in 2019.

Abstract:The optical fiber communication network is the important infrastructure for the modern information society. Thanks to the reduction of fiber loss, the improvement of transceiver devices by electro-optical-electrical conversion, the development of modulation technology and the introduction of digital signal processing, the capacity of optical fiber transmission has been greatly improved. In recent years, due to the large capacity demand of data-centers and the next-generation wireless communication, metro and short-range transmission scenarios below 100 km have attracted lots of attention based on direct detection. The historical evolution of optical fiber communication systems was firstly reviewed, then the limiting factors in the direct detection system were analyzed. Furthermore, the principle and system configuration of one-dimensional to four-dimensional self-coherent technology were introduced, and finally, the low-cost evolution trend of the optical coherent transmission system was prospected.

Abstract:In the nearest decades, the rapidly increasing demand of wireless connectivity has resulted in the ubiquitous deployment of wireless systems as well as heavily congested wireless spectrum. Owing to the various inherent advantages, such as spectral and bandwidth relief, no healthy concern, high security, low cost, and low interference with Radio Frequency (RF) waves, visible light communication (VLC) has been an emerging optical wireless data transmission approach that can act as a good complement to and substitute for Radio Frequency. How to achieve a high-speed data transmission is a key problem to be solved in the VLC system. This review mainly focuses on the enabling technologies for high-speed VLC systems, including novel transmitter architectures, blue filters and advanced modulation, and equalization technologies. And the inherent advantages, potential applications, and some issues of VLC that need further study are presented as well. Finally, a comprehensive survey on the recent developments and the key contributions by research groups involved in the field of high-speed VLC is provided.

Abstract:With the rapid growth in the number of both Internet users and applications, bandwidth requirement keeps on increasing in recent years in China. To provide adequate and various services for users, both research and industry have made great progress in optical communications with the support of Government and the contribution of enterprises, universities and Institutes. This paper presents the current R&D situations and prospects of optical communication and optical access network in China. Some national programs, such as O-Time and 3T-net, are introduced. Then, the status of broadband optical access development in China is provided.
