Abstract:Satellite-Terrestrial integrated Networks (STNs) have been advocated by both academia and industry as a promising network paradigm to achieve service continuity and ubiquity. However, STNs suffer from problems including poor flexibility of network architecture, low adaptability to dynamic environments, the lack of network intelligence, and low resource utilization. To handle these challenges, a Software defined Intelligent STN (SISTN) architecture is introduced. Specifically, the hierarchical architecture of the proposal is described and a distributed deployment scheme for SISTNs controllers is proposed to realize agile and effective network management and control. Moreover, three use cases in SISTNs are discussed. Meanwhile, key techniques and their corresponding solutions are presented, followed by the identification of several open issues in SISTNs including compatibility with existing networks, the tradeoff between network flexibility and performance, and so on.

Abstract:Due to the unprecedented advances in satellite fabrication and deployment, innovative communications and networking technologies, ambitious space projects and programs, and the resurgence of interest in satellite networks, there is a need to redefine space networks (SpaceNets) to incorporate all of these evolutions. This paper introduces a vision for future SpaceNets that considers advances in several related domains. First, we present a reference architecture that captures the various network entities and terminals in a holistic manner. Based on this, space, air, and ground use cases are studied. Then, the architectures and technologies that enable the envisaged SpaceNets are investigated. In so doing, we highlight the activities and projects of different standardization bodies, satellite operators, and national organizations towards the envisioned SpaceNets. Finally, the challenges, potential solutions, and open issues from communications and networking perspectives are discussed.

The heterogeneous nature of diverse WET techniques should be exploited for realising the future Internet of Energy (IoE) Internet of Energy (IOE) . The performance limit of the WET should be explored from the information theoretical perspective. The interference imposed by the WET signal on the WITWireless Information Transfer (WIT) signal should be properly cancelled in the multi-user DEIN. The DEINData and Energy Integrated Communication Network (DEIN) aided mobile cloud computing is another promising application, which is worth intensive efforts.

Abstract:The satellite tracking, telemetry, and command system, or TT&C, is utilized to transmit the telemetry and telecommand data, as well as to determine the satellite orbit. It is the lifeline of a satellite, and thus its safety and reliability are of fundamental importance to the satellite. After years of development, the traditional satellite TT&C technologies are relatively mature, while there are still many open problems to be solved for long distance deep space explorers and satellite mega-constellation. In this article, we start with a brief review regarding the evolution of the TT&C system applied in space missions. Then we raise the challenges and potential solutions for the TT&C system in solar system explorations and suggest a new networked TT&C system that is suitable for large-scale satellite constellation management tasks. In the end, some potential TT&C technologies are indicated considering the future technology. In general, the goal of this article is to provide an overview to understand the motivation, challenges, methodology, and solutions of the satellite TT&C system.

Abstract:As a promising paradigm toward the sixth generation mobile communication, integrated satellite-terrestrial networks (ISTNs) can greatly extend network coverage and reduce the dependence on terrestrial infrastructure. Despite the charming potentials of ISTN, many challenges are still unsolved in terms of architectures, air interface protocol enhancement, mobility management, experimental validation, and so on. Therefore, in this article, we first clarify the four stages of ISTN architecture development and then discuss protocol enhancements as well as key techniques for ISTN. In addition, one of our previous experiments is reported in detail, where low Earth orbit satellite communication is used as the backbone connecting two private 5G networks that are 400 km away from each other. During the experiment, a remote immersive robot control service is realized with average end-to-end latency and uplink peak data rate being 30 ms and 50 Mb/s, respectively, which shows the feasibility of ISTN in supporting emerging industrial Internet applications. Meanwhile, other experimental progress is also presented, focusing on air interface protocol enhancement, transmission control protocol transmission, and network management. Finally, we point out future trends in ISTN, including programmable satellites and artificial-intelligence-based networking.

Abstract:Traditional satellite networks depend on the closed and planned architecture. Thus, there are many challenges such as configuration update, new communication and networking technologies introduction, truly-differentiated services provision, satellite network device interoperability, and the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks. Software-defined networking (SDN) has the features of flexibility, programmability, and logical centralization, which increases network resource utilization, simplifies network management, reduces operating cost, and promotes the evolution and innovation. In this paper, a new software-defined architecture for next-generation satellite networks, called SoftSpace, is presented. The concepts of network function virtualization, network virtualization, and software-defined radio are exploited in the SoftSpace to facilitate the incorporation of new applications, services, and satellite communication technologies. This can not only reduce the capital expenditures and operational expenditures but also integrate satellite networks with terrestrial networks seamlessly, as well as can improve the interoperability of satellite network devices. In addition, we discuss the challenges and solutions for network management. The necessary network management instruments including multi-layer controller architecture, cooperative traffic classification, and utility-optimal network virtualization are presented. Finally, we discuss the challenges and solutions for space networking. The software-defined space networking solutions including quality of experience-aware space routing, SDN-enabled hybrid fault recovery mechanism, and software-defined space mobility management are developed.

Abstract:In the next two decades, humans are going to experience a grand age of deep-space exploration,especially in Mars and Lunar spaces. These relatively frequent and long-term activities provide the opportunity, and at the same time, demands the necessity for a true interplanetary network as an essential infrastructure for future deep-space exploration. In this study, we try to provide a picture and a perspective in the current network protocol architectures for future deep-space internetworking. We first investigate the recent technical advances for deep-space internetworking and the challenges to their network protocol architecture. Detailed technical characteristics of three effective network protocol architectures are presented. A special focus is casted on delay tolerant networking(DTN), which is a dedicated network protocol architecture for deep-space internetworking. Finally, several open questions in DTN for future deep-space internetworking are proposed for further study.

Abstract:Satellite-terrestrial integrated networks have been proposed as a promising solution to provide global seamless coverage in next-generation communication networks. Network simulation is a fundamental and economically efficient step to enable the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks, compared with the high cost of field trials and real-world system deployment. Simulation challenges arise with the fast growth of LEO mega-constellations, including frequent re-connection and handover, long satellite transmission delays, high dynamics of satellite network topologies, and the integration of heterogeneous infrastructures. More requirements emerge for satellite-terrestrial integrated simulations, including fidelity, scalability, extensibility, agility, and real-time. However, there is a lack of state-of-the-art reviews of relevant simulators. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the most comprehensive and latest survey that covers network simulators for satellite-terrestrial integrated networks, with all or partial simulation functionalities for satellite orbit simulation, physical layer modeling, and network protocols and algorithms. Compared with existing surveys, this survey contributes to three aspects: (1) an up-to-date collection and a comprehensive taxonomy of simulation tools in the past decade, (2) a summary of the main requirements and challenges, and (3) an inspiring summary of new research opportunities and publicly available simulation tools for follow-up research.

Abstract:Satellite Internet of Things (IoT) is to use satellites as the access points for IoT devices to achieve the global coverage of future IoT systems, and is expected to support burgeoning IoT applications, including communication, sensing, and computing. However, the complex and dynamic satellite environments and limited network resources raise new challenges in the design of satellite IoT systems. In this article, we focus on the joint design of communication, sensing, and computing to improve the performance of satellite IoT, which is quite different from the case of terrestrial IoT systems. We describe how the integration of the three functions can enhance system capabilities, and summarize the state-of-the-art solutions. Furthermore, we discuss the main challenges of integrating communication, sensing, and computing in satellite IoT to be solved with pressing interest.

Networked TT&C for Mega Satellite Constellations: A Security Perspective

Abstract:Satellite constellations are promising in enabling the global Internet. However, the increasing constellation size also complicates tracking, telemetry and command (TT&C) systems. Traditional ground-based and space-based approaches have encountered significant obstacles due to, e.g., the limited satellite visible arc and long transmission delay. Consider-ing the fast development of intersatellite communica-tions, synergy among multiple connected satellites can be exploited to facilitate TT&C system designs. This leads to networked TT&C, which requires much less predeployed infrastructures and even performs better than traditional TT&C systems. In this paper, we elaborate system characteristics of networked TT&C compared with traditional ground-based and space-based TT&C, and propose the unique security chal-lenges and opportunities for networked TT&C, which includes secure routing and trust mechanisms. Fur-thermore, since networked TT&C is a novel scenario with few relevant researches, we first investigate the current researches on secure routing and trust mecha-nisms for traditional terrestrial and satellite networks, and then accordingly deliver our security perspectives considering the system characteristics and security re-quirements of networked TT&C.

Abstract:Satellite Internet of Things (IoT) is a promising way to provide seamless coverage to a massive number of devices all over the world, especially in remote areas not covered by cellular networks, e.g., forests, oceans, mountains, and deserts. In general, satellite IoT networks take low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites as access points, which solves the problem of wide coverage, but leads to many challenging issues. We first give an overview of satellite IoT, with an emphasis on revealing the characteristics of IoT services. Then, the challenging issues of satellite IoT, i.e., massive connectivity, wide coverage, high mobility, low power, and stringent delay, are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the possible solutions to these challenges are provided. In particular, new massive access protocols and techniques are designed according to the characteristics and requirements of satellite IoT. Finally, we discuss several development trends of satellite IoT to stimulate and encourage further research in such a broad area.

A two-layered architecture constructed by integrating geostationary orbit (GEO) and low earth orbit (LEO) satel ite constel ations is proposed for the space-based transmission network, and related issues such as the onboard processing ability, air interface, protocol stack, routing and switching, and systematic verification are discussed.

Abstract:With the development of deep space exploration technologies, main space agencies all over the world are working hard to develop the solar system interplanetary communication networks(SSICN). SSICN is a perspective communication networking system characterized by high data rate, high intelligent and perfect interconnection, which could provide the deep-space mission control and scientific application with the convenient, reliable and secure data transmission services. Following the introduction of future deep space exploration prospect, this paper analyzes the similarities and differences for three networks, terrestrial internet, near Earth space networks and SSICN, then discusses the key technologies and research trends of SSICN in details, and finally proposes the suggestions for the construction of future Chinese SSICN.

Abstract:Satellite communications (SatComs) have recently entered a period of renewed interest motivated by technological advances and nurtured through private investment and ventures. The present survey aims at capturing the state of the art in SatComs, while highlighting the most promising open research topics. Firstly, the main innovation drivers are motivated, such as new constellation types, on-board processing capabilities, non-terrestrial networks and space-based data collection/processing. Secondly, the most promising applications are described, i.e., 5G integration, space communications, Earth observation, aeronautical and maritime tracking and communication. Subsequently, an in-depth literature review is provided across five axes: i) system aspects, ii) air interface, iii) medium access, iv) networking, v) testbeds & prototyping. Finally, a number of future challenges and the respective open research topics are described.

Abstract:Considering the overarching trend in mobile communication development, the extensive coverage and seamless connectivity offered by non-terrestrial networks (NTN) are becoming increasingly essential. NTN communications, characterized by extensive data volumes, hyper-connectivity, and large-scale fading, present notable challenges to traditional communication methods. This paper proposes a semantic communication-based NTN (SC-based NTN) architecture, highlighting its potential applications. However, the integration of semantic communication within NTN faces three key challenges, including multimodality, security, and resource allocation. This paper explores the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence, physical layer security, and intelligent resource management technologies, which promote multimodal, secure, and efficient communications for NTN. Finally, the paper outlines a visionary outlook for SC-based NTN, highlighting its potential impact on the future of mobile networks.

Abstract:With the increasing global communication demands and the development of Internet of Things (IoT), extending the connectivity to rural and remote areas has become imperative for future networks. The sixth-generation (6G) network is expected to provide heterogeneous services and seamless network coverage for everyone and everything. Combining the advantages of both satellite and terrestrial networks, the integrated satellite-terrestrial network architecture is promising to provide global broadband access for all types of users, which has drawn much attention from both the academia and industry. In this article, we present a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art of integrated satellite-terrestrial networks toward 6G. First, an executive classification and summary of the integration architecture is presented from network design to performance optimization. Then, typical applications of the integrated satellite-terrestrial network are discussed based on the architecture. By considering the unique characteristics of the two networks, main challenges are pointed out when performing integration, such as the long propagation delay, complex link conditions, and high dynamics of the network topology. Finally, some promising future techniques are explored from the perspective of the integrated architecture. A detailed survey of the potential integration architectures is of great importance to enable more flexible network design and construction in future 6G networks. This article will provide a valuable guideline on future research and development of integrated satellite-terrestrial networks.

Abstract:Future wireless networks will be required to provide more wireless services at higher data rates and with global coverage. However, existing homogeneous wireless networks, such as cellular and satellite networks, may not be able to meet such requirements individually, especially in remote terrain, including seas and mountains. One possible solution is to use diversified wireless networks that can exploit the inter-connectivity between satellites, aerial base stations (BSs), and terrestrial BSs over inter-connected space, ground, and aerial networks. Hence, enabling wireless communication in one integrated network has attracted both the industry and the research fraternities. In this work, we provide a comprehensive survey of the most recent work on hybrid satellite-terrestrial networks (HSTNs), focusing on system architecture, performance analysis, design optimization, and secure communication schemes for different cooperative and cognitive HSTN network architectures. Different key technologies are compared. Based on this comparison, several open issues for future research are discussed.

Abstract:Mobile communication standards have been developed into a new era of B5G and 6G. In recent years, low earth orbit (LEO) satellites and space Internet have become hot topics. The integrated satellite and terrestrial systems have been widely discussed by industries and academics, and even are expected to be applied in those huge constellations in construction. This paper points out the trends of two stages towards system integration of the terrestrial mobile communication and the satellite communications: to be compatible with 5G, and to be integrated within 6G. Based on analysis of the challenges of both stages, key technologies are thereafter analyzed in detail, covering both air interface currently discussed in 3GPP for B5G and also novel network architecture and related transmission technologies toward future 6G.
