Abstract:Land coverage is finite in all countries, whereas, land resource per capita is shrinking due to the population increase on the daily basis and the soaring urbanization. As a result of the land resource shrinkage, there may be some challenges and threats in food security. So this study focuses on the agricultural land use efficiency for the 20 Asian agricultural developing countries. DEA model was employed to measure the land use efficiency in the financial year 2005-2006, 2007-2008, 2009-2010, 2011-2012, and 2013-2014. We consider arable land, agrarian machinery, agricultural labor, fertilizer and population as the inputs. Apart from that, cereal production is viewed as the desirable output and carbon emission as undesirable output. In order to benchmark, we measure the DMUs efficiency by BCC and CCR model for the selected countries, and the results of BCC and CCR indicate CN, NEP, ROM, SAUD, VIET, KAZ and QTR are efficient almost in every year. According to technical efficiency some are non-significant variables which connote no effect on production; conversely, significant variables indicate positive effects on production. Therefore, this study recommended to reduce the inputs that are not significant DMU`s and apply proper quantity of inputs for sustainable production. To keep pace with population growth, food production in selected countries and the Pacific will need to increase mainly through improved land and labor productivity. Measures are needed to increase agricultural investments and put in place supporting national and international policies.
