Abstract:In recent years, increasing attention has been devoted to nanoparticles with both fluorescence and magnetic resonance modes. However, the high toxicity and low modal efficiency of such nanoparticles provide many opportunities for improvement. Considering that water molecules weaken fluorescence and strengthen magnetic resonance, a laponite nanocomposite chelated via dopamine (Eu(DPA)n-Lap@DA-Gd) was designed and easily prepared using a dopamine coating to localize materials according to their functions. Gd3+ ions on the exterior of the composite are fully exposed to water molecules, while the internal Eu3+ ions are protected from water by dopamine. Compared with other dual-mode nanoparticles, the obtained materials exhibit significant MRI signal enhancement (r(1) = 23.4 mM(-1) s(-1)) and strong luminescence intensity. Notably, the excellent biocompatibility of Eu(DPA)(n)-Lap@DA-Gd was confirmed by an appropriate MTT assay. In addition, coordination polymer gels were synthesized. This work provides an example for exploiting the advantages of localized assembly structures within dual-mode materials and improving their application in biological fields.
