Abstract:The first report of the in situ capture of the SO2 fragment of the trifluoromethylsulfonyl radical is described here. With cyclobutanone oximes as representative alkyl radical precursors, vinyl triflates and allyl trifluoromethylsulfones were employed as radical acceptors and SO2 sources to provide various β-ketosulfones and allylsulfones, known to be significant building blocks. Without the use of any additives including external SO2 gas, the reaction was performed under mild photoredox- or metal-catalytic conditions while tolerating various functional groups.

Abstract:Herein, we present a new desulfurative method for generating primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl radicals through visible-light photoredox catalysis. A process that involves the generation of N-centered radicals from sulfinamide intermediates, followed by subsequent fragmentation, is critical to forming the corresponding alkyl radical species. This strategy has been successfully applied to conjugate addition reactions that features mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope (>60 examples), and good functional-group tolerance.

Abstract:Katritzky salts are used as the alkyl radical precursors with the insertion of sulfur dioxide under photoredox catalysis. This transformation first enables direct generation of various alkylsulfonyl radicals by photoinduced single electron reduction, leading to diverse dialkyl sulfones in good to excellent yields. A radical pathway is proposed under visible-light induced conditions with the insertion of sulfur dioxide.

Abstract:Sulfones are widely found in natural products and drug molecules. Here, we disclose a strategy for direct synthesis of sulfone compounds with diverse structures by visible-light-catalyzed radical-radical cross-coupling of sulfonyl chlorides and trifluoroborate salts. Allyl, benzyl, vinyl, and aryl trifluoroborates can be successfully cross-coupled with (hetero)aryl and alkyl sulfonyl chlorides, respectively. This strategy features redox neutrality, good substrate generality, simple operation, and benign reaction conditions.

Abstract:A photoredox-catalyzed sulfonylation of alkyl iodides, sulfur dioxide, and electron-deficient alkenes under mild conditions is achieved. This reaction proceeds through alkyl radicals formed in situ from alkyl iodides under visible light irradiation in the presence of a photoredox catalyst. The alkyl radical intermediates would react with sulfur dioxide leading to alkylsulfonyl radicals, which would be trapped by electron-deficient alkenes giving rise to alkyl sulfones. Various functional groups including nitro, halo, acetyl, sufonyl, and pyridinyl are all tolerated under the photoredox conditions.

Abstract:A novel kind of S-alkynylthio sulfonate, which can be directly activated under visible-light irradiation, has been developed for the radical addition of multiple bond systems and radical coupling with diazonium salts under photocatalyst-free conditions. Abstract:Conventional visible-light-induced Smiles rearrangements generate C, N, or O radicals and release SO2. Herein, we describe a perfectly atom-economical protocol for Smiles rearrangements without release of SO2. The protocol not only afforded alkyl sulfinic acid salts via photocatalyzed radical addition, aryl migration, and sulfone radical reduction but also permitted efficient functionalization of butenyl heteroaryl sulfone derivatives under mild conditions.

Abstract:Photoredox alkene or alkyne alkylsulfonylation has been achieved with phthalimide esters and sulfinates providing unexpected α-sulfones. Mechanistic studies disclose that the preferential alkyl radical addition to the alkene or the Markovnikov hydrosulfonation of the alkyne should contribute to the formation of the β-alkylated α-sulfones. Moreover, the reaction is easy to operate covering quite large substrate scales including primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl groups and all sorts of terminal aryl alkenes or alkynes. Besides, the reaction was also suitable for the sulfonylation of several drug molecules.

Abstract:Radical formation is an initial step for conventional radical chemistry. Reported herein is a unified strategy to generate radicals in situ from aromatic β -ketoester only by a photocatalyst. Under visible light irradiation, a small amount of photocatalyst fac -Ir(ppy) 3 succeeds in the generation of transient α -carbonyl radical and persistent ketyl radical in situ , for the first time. In contrast to the well-established approaches, neither stoichiometric external oxidant nor reductant is required for this reaction. The synthetic utility is demonstrated by pinacol-coupling of ketyl radicals and benzannulation of α -carbonyl radicals with alkynes to give a series of highly substituted 1-naphthols in good to excellent yields. Provided the readily available photocatalyst, extremely mild reaction condition, broad substrate scope and functionality tolerance offer a unique perspective in synthetic planning and implementation.

Abstract:An unprecedented in situ SO2-capture cascade triggered by alkyl radicals has been documented herein. Mechanistic investigations suggest that, triggered by alkyl radicals, SO2 was released in situ and subsequently fixed into polycyclic small molecules. A wide range of alkylsulfonyl substituted polycyclic compounds were easily prepared with high yields and good functional group tolerability.

Abstract:The emergence of radical chemistry as well as green chemistry in organic synthesis has initiated an interest in photochemistry over the past decade. With catalytic amounts of photoredox catalysts under light irradiation, high active radical species are produced, which could trigger the subsequent organic transformations smoothly. Among the various photoredox reactions, photo‐catalytic C–S bond formation continues to thrive, as the C–S bond is indispensable in many important biological and pharmaceutical compounds. Great attention has been devoted to this area as illustrated by the series of papers on sulfone and sulfoxide skeleton synthesis under irradiation published in the past years. This review summarizing the recent advances in photo‐catalyzed sulfones and sulfoxide formation is arranged by reaction type together with the sulfur source covering sulfonylation and sulfinylation reactions. It is intended to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of photo‐catalytic C‐S bond formation and offer help for future research.

Abstract:A visible light-driven photoredox-catalyzed and copper(II)-assisted three-component radical addition/hydroxylation reaction of alkenes, sulfur ylides, and water is reported. This process shows broad substrate scope and high functional group tolerance, with respect to both readily available sulfur ylides and alkenes, providing high-yielding and practical access to valuable γ-hydroxy carbonyl compounds. Key to the success of the reaction is the controlled generation of α-carbonyl carbon radicals from sulfur ylides via sulfonium salts by a visible-light-driven proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) strategy in a mixture of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol/CH2Cl2. Addition of Cu(TFA)2·H2O helps to accelerate the radical-cation crossover to improve the reaction efficiency. Mechanistic studies suggest that the hydroxy moiety in the products stems from water. This study also builds up a platform for further investigation into the radical synthetic chemistry of sulfur ylides.

Abstract:The recent development of photoredox and energy transfer catalysis has led to a significant expansion of visible light-driven chemical transformations. These methods have demonstrated exceptional efficiency in converting a wide range of substrates into radical intermediates and generating open-shell catalytic species. However, the simplification of catalytic systems and the direct generation of highly reactive radical organocatalysts through direct visible light irradiation from stable precatalysts remains largely an unrealized goal. This challenge is mainly due to the limited availability of precatalysts that are responsive to visible light. Herein, we introduce a new class of bench-stable dicationic disulfuranes, which release highly reactive thiyl radicals upon blue light excitation. Spectroscopic and computational studies reveal that this reactivity arises from a combination of structural features and intermolecular interactions. This family of molecules has been employed to catalyze radical cascades previously incompatible with photoredox conditions, enabling the efficient formation of 1,2-dioxolanes and 1,3-hydroxyketones in excellent yields and short reaction times.
