Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are considered as a promising energy storage system due to their low cost and high safety merits. However, they suffer from the challenge of uncontrollable dendrite growth due to a non-uniform zinc deposition, which increases internal resistance and causes battery failure. Herein, Ag coating fabricated by a facile surface chemistry route on zinc metal was developed to guide uniform zinc deposition. Ag-coated Zn shows improved electrolyte wettability, a small zinc deposition overpotential, and fast kinetics for zinc deposition/dissolution. Direct optical visualization and scanning electron microscopy images show uniform zinc deposition due to the introduction of Ag coating. As a result, the Ag-coated Zn anode can sustain up to 1450 h of repeated plating/stripping with a low overpotential in symmetric cells at a current density of 0.2 mA cm–2, while an improved performance is realized for full cells paired with a V2O5-based cathode. Uniform Zinc Electrodeposition Directed by Interfacial Cation Reservoir for Stable Zn-I2 Battery

Abstract:Rough interfacial Zn electrodeposition and severe parasitic side reactions in aqueous electrolyte, resulting in increased internal resistance and limited reversibility, have significantly hindered the commercial deployment of Zn metal anode. Interfacial engineering offers a versatile platform for manipulating the zinc-ion flux and suppressing side reactions, via pre-formation of an artificial interlayer. Herein, we demonstrate a zincophile inter phase based on metal-organic framework cation reservoir. The zinc hexacyanoferrate nanocubes with interconnected open cation transfer channels uniformize the interfacial electric field and render the protected electrode with faster zinc redox kinetic and higher exchange current density. The cations within the reservoir served as an ion-transfer mediator could regulate interfacial Zn2+ even distribution and lower zinc-ion nucleation energy barrier, consequently promoting the homogeneous Zn electrodeposition. Additionally, the in situ preformed film also enhances the thermodynamic stability of metal anode and avoids the water-induced side interfacial reaction. The protected anode exhibits an extremely low voltage hysteresis and achieves a high average Coulombic efficiency (similar to 99.6%) for 400 h with dendrite-free behaviors. When coupled with an iodine cathode, the favorable electrochemical performance of full Zn-I-2 cells is realized, representing an advanced practical step toward stable Zn metal anode for real applications.

Abstract:Zinc metal has been naturally considered as the most anticipated anode material for zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), given the benefits of large volume specific capacity, low electrode potential, and inexpensive cost. However, the growth of zinc dendrites and the corrosion of hydrogen evolution during the Zn2+ ion deposition process are the bottlenecks restricting the large-scale application of zinc metal. Herein, we report the modification of zinc anodes by utilizing a ball-milling clay precipitate (designated as BMC, consisting of the unetched MAX phase and the Ti3C2Tx phase) to construct a three-dimensional (3D) framework on the surface of zinc foil (Zn@BMC). Different from the close stacking of conventionally prepared MXene sheets after film formation, the BMC coating firmly adheres to the zinc surface through the binder. The abundant internal space relieves the stress during the volume change of the Zn metal and uniformizes the Zn2+ ion flux. Consequently, Zn@BMC not only achieves a stable long cycle (2000 h, 0.5 mA h cm-2) but also inhibits the side reaction of hydrogen evolution by physically separating the electrolyte and the zinc metal anode. We reckon that our research will aid in clarifying the design principles governing the interface of the zinc metal anode in ZIBs.

Abstract:Understanding zinc (Zn) deposition behavior and improving Zn stripping and plating reversibility are significant in developing practical aqueous Zn ion batteries (AZIBs). Zn metal is abundant, cost-effective, and intrinsically safe compared with Li. However, their similar inhomogeneous growth regime harms their practicality. This work reports a facile, easily scalable, but effective method to develop a textured Zn with unidirectional scratches on the surface that electrochemically achieves a high accumulated areal capacity of 5530 mAh cm-2 with homogenized Zn deposition. In symmetric cells, textured Zn presents a stable cycling performance of 1100 hours (vs 250 h of bare Zn) at 0.5 mA cm-2 for 0.5 mAh cm-2 and lower nucleation and plating overpotentials of 120.5 and 41.8 mV. In situ optical microscopy and COMSOL simulation disclose that the textured surface topography can 1) homogenize the electron field distribution on the Zn surface and regulate Zn nucleation and growth, and 2) provides physical space to accommodate Zn deposits, prevent the detachment of "dead" Zn, and improve the structural sufficiency of Zn anode. Moreover, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry analysis find that the textured Zn with regulated interfacial electron activity also presents a higher resistance toward hydrogen evolution and other parasitic reactions.

Abstract:Zinc (Zn)-metal anodes are promising candidates for large-scale, highly safe energy-storage systems. However, their cycling life is associated with instability issues such as dendritic growth, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution. Introducing an artificial metal interface is expected to help overcome this challenge owing to the optimization of the absorption, nucleation, and growth of Zn2+. In this study, an ultrafast, universal, and cost-effective superfilling approach is developed to construct a metal artificial interface decorated Zn anode in situ. Most zincophilic metals, including Sn, Cu, and Ag, can be used to construct a homogenous interface without any restrictions on the size, morphology, or curvature of the substrates. With Sn as a proof-of-concept demonstration, the as-obtained Sn@Zn anode is conducive for the homogenous Zn nuclei and 2D diffusion of Zn2+ ions. Symmetric cells with Sn@Zn electrodes can be operated for over 900 h at different current densities. This superior performance contributes to the attractive electrochemical characteristics of both coin and scaled-up Sn@Zn//beta-MnO2 cells. Given the facile and cost-effective fabrication and recyclability of the cells, this work enables the efficient design and exploration of Zn anodes for research, industrialization, and commercialization purposes.

Abstract:The ramped-up dendritic deposits, hydrogen evolution reaction, and corrosion of the zinc anode at high current density and high areal capacity constitute enormous obstacles to commercializing of aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). Here, a facile impregnation treatment is reported for the in-situ controllable synthesis of a protective layer composed of ultrafine metallic tin particles on the zinc foil for the first time. Compared with the protection layer with large particles, the surface with ultrafine particles demonstrates an enhanced homogeneous electric field and more active sites to achieve accelerated transport kinetics of zinc ions. Additionally, the nucleation energy barrier is effectively reduced due to the higher surface energy of the ultrafine particles to guarantee the stability of deep electrodeposition at high areal capacity. Therefore, the electrode delivers a durable and steady stripping/plating behaviour over 2000 h at 1 mA cm−2 (1 mAh cm−2) with an extremely reduced voltage hysteresis (≈16 mV). At a high areal capacity of 10 mAh cm−2, it stably cycles for over 300 h with a high depth of discharge (87.8 %). The feasibility of its practical implementation has been validated in coin cells and flexible pouch cells. This work sheds new light on improving the electrochemical deposition behaviour of ZIBs for deep plating/stripping under high current densities, serving as a reference for the design of nanoscale protective layers for ZIBs or other metal batteries.

Abstract:The practical application of Zn anodes for aqueous rechargeable Zn batteries is impeded by an uncontrollable dendritic Zn deposition and the associated interface mechanisms that still remain ambiguous. Herein, we clarify Zn plating behaviors in multi-scale spanning from sub-nanometer to micrometers and disclose a dislocation-rich feature in Zn deposits near the interface for the first time. The refined crystalline diffraction analysis of original Zn foil and deposited Zn also indicates the existence of lattice distortion at the bulk level. Moreover, we construct a (111) plane-oriented Au coating layer on Zn anodes (Au-Zn) guided by DFT calculations and reveal its zincophilicity by in situ optical observations. The zincophilic interlayer integrates the advantages of inducing spacious Zn nucleation and enhancing the wettability of electrodes to aqueous electrolyte, which thus leads to effective control of Zn deposition with suppressed crystalline defects and dendrites. Tested on coin-type cells, Au-Zn electrodes show lower overpotentials and higher stability compared to bare Zn electrodes (490 h vs 68 h). Findings in this work shed light on fundamental understanding of material electrochemistry and are instructive to future interfacial design for aqueous rechargeable Zn batteries.

Abstract:The uneven Zn deposition severely hinders the commercial application of zinc anode and rechargeable aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs). In this work, the underpotential deposition (UPD) behavior of zinc is unveiled and a stable zinc anode host with underpotential deposition nucleation site of copper (3DH-Cu) is fabricated to guide homogeneous zinc deposition and enable long cycling stable rechargeable AZMBs. The uniformly distributed Cu UPD nucleation sites can avoid the electron concentration, reduce the nucleation barrier, and accelerate the deposition kinetics, which is attributed to the narrow band gap of Cu UPD nucleation sites, thus achieving a low nucleation overpotential of ~20 mV and a low activation energy (E a ) of 24.3 kJ mol −1 . The 3DH-Cu@Zn anode exhibited an extremely stable overpotential (37 mV), and a high average Coulombic Efficiency of 99.4 % in 1000 cycling under 10 mA cm −2 /1mAh cm −2 condition. A full cell with 3DH-Cu@Zn anode and NaV 3 O 8 -1.5H 2 O cathode (NVO) provides long cycle life and a low capacity degradation at 1Ag −1 (above 150mAh g −1 capacity after 1000 cycles). Hopefully, anode design based on UPD can be considered to improve the electrochemical performance of AZMBs.

Abstract:The severe dendrites have been considered longstanding plaguing to the high energy density batteries using Zn metal anode. Here, the Zn foil treated by rapid cooling in water after annealing can promote uniform Zn nucleation on its surface which can alleviate the formation of Zn dendrites is discovered. Especially, the point that microscopic morphology and defect cluster caused by the quenching in the Zn metal anode can restrain the surface diffusion of the adsorbed-state Zn atoms which is beneficial to uniform Zn nucleation is proposed. Therefore, the resultant Zn anode achieves sustained ultra-stability in cycling performance (over 1700 h) at 2 mA cm −2 for 1 mAh cm −2 in the symmetric cell and the long-term cycling performance with a discharge capacity of 126.2 mAh g −1 after 1100 cycles at 1 A g −1 in the MnO 2 full cell. Our work merges the traditional preparation technology of metal to provide a general pathway toward energy-dense metal batteries.

Abstract:Zn deposition with a surface-preferred (002) crystal plane has attracted extensive attention due to its inhibited dendrite growth and side reactions. However, the nucleation and growth of the Zn(002) crystal plane are closely related to the interfacial properties. Herein, oriented growth of Zn(002) crystal plane is realized on Ag-modified surface that is directly visualized by in situ atomic force microscopy. A solid solution HCP-Zn (~1.10 at.% solubility of Ag, 30 °C) is formed on the Ag coated Zn foil (Zn@Ag) and possesses the same crystal structure as Zn to reduce its nucleation barrier caused by their lattice mismatch. It merits oriented Zn deposition and corrosion-resistant surface, and presents long cycling stability in symmetric cells and full cells coupled with V2O5 cathode. This work provides insights into interfacial regulation of Zn anodes for high-performance aqueous zinc metal batteries.

Abstract:A novel additive, sodium diphenylamine sulfonate (DASS), is proposed to regulate uniform zinc deposition and to suppress side reactions in an aqueous electrolyte. Due to the strong double coordination effect between N, S sites and Zn (Zn–N, Zn–S), promoted Coulombic efficiencies and lifespans of Zn based symmetric/asymmetric batteries can be achieved. The long‐term reversible plating/stripping of Zn metal anode is a critical aspect within aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs). However, it is limited by uncontrolled electrodeposition and side reactions occurring at the anode/electrolyte interface. Guided by the metal‐coordination chemistry, a novel additive, sodium diphenylamine sulfonate (DASS), is added into ZnSO4 electrolyte to guide stably invertible zinc deposition. Theoretical calculations and experimental results reveal that the DASS can adsorbed on the Zn anode surface due to the strong double coordination effect between N, S sites and Zn (Zn─N, Zn─S), and this adsorbed DASS layer can not only prevent the intimate contact between H2O and anode to inhibit interfacial side reactions, but also guide the 3D Zn2+ion diffusion and uniform electrodeposition to inhibit zinc dendrites. Consequently, the DASS additive enables an ultra‐long stable cycling up to 2400 h at 1 mA cm−2 (1 mAh cm−2), even at an ultra‐high current density of 20 mA cm−2, a stable cycling of 250 h is demonstrated, highlighting the reliable coordination effect at the anode/electrolyte interface. This study offers a new perspective on the interfacial double‐coordination effect for achieving highly reversible Zn metal anodes in aqueous rechargeable zinc‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Periodic 3D hemispherical structured Cu foil with preferential exposure of the Cu (100) crystal plane are designed and obtained using a sequential photolithography‐wet chemistry method. The 3D Cu foil lowers the Zn nucleation barriers, reduces the local current density and buffers the volume expansion during the cycling process, which induces homogeneous Zn deposition and achieves prolonged cycle life. The unsatisfactory electrochemical performance of Zn metal batteries (ZMBs) caused by uncontrollable Zn dendrite growth and detrimental parasitic reactions has significantly hindered their large‐scale applications. Herein, periodic hemispherical structures with a preferential exposure of Cu (100) crystal plane are designed and obtained using facile photolithography, which is followed by wet etching treatment. An exposed zincophilic Cu (100) crystal plane with low nucleation barriers acts as the preferred deposition site to induce homogeneous Zn deposition. Additionally, the periodic hemispherical structure with an enlarged surface area not only suppresses the Zn dendrite growth by reducing the local current density, but also synergistically buffers the volume expansion during the cycling process. As a result, the as‐prepared faceted Cu hemispherical electrodes achieve ultra‐stable Coulombic efficiency of over 99.9% for 1500 cycles at a current density of 5 mA cm−2. This work has significant potential for the rational design of dendrite‐free Zn anodes to boost their potential for practical applications.

Abstract:A porous amorphous silicon nitride protective layer with high zincophobicity is constructed on the zinc anode surface, and its isotropic zinc affinity guides the uniform stripping/plating of zinc ions underneath the protective layer to obtain a stable zinc anode. It reveals the key role of uniform metal affinity induced by the amorphous materials in the interface modification of metal anodes. Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) have drawn the attention of numerous researchers owing to their high safety and cost‐effectiveness. However, the dendrite growth and side reactions of the zinc (Zn) anodes limit their further practical applications. Herein, a porous amorphous silicon nitride protective layer with high zincophobicity is constructed on the Zn anode surface, which can guide the uniform stripping/plating of Zn2+ underneath the protective layer through its isotropic Zn affinity to alleviate the growth of dendrites and by‐products. As a result, the amorphous silicon nitride‐protected Zn anode can maintain a stable Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.8% and low voltage hysteresis for 710 cycles in the half cell. The full cell with the as‐prepared Zn anode can deliver excellent electrochemical performances (89.0% capacity retention and 144.4 mAh g−1 discharge capacity after 1000 cycles at 4 A g−1). This work reveals the key role of uniform metal affinity induced by the amorphous materials in the interface modification of metal anodes, which is instructive for the design of stable metal anodes.

Ultrafast Super‐filling Construction of Metal Artificial Interface for Long‐term Stable Zinc Anode

Abstract:Zinc (Zn) metal anodes are promising candidates for large‐scale, highly safe energy storage systems. However, their cycling life is associated with instability issues such as dendritic growth, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution. Introducing an artificial metal interface is expected to help overcome this challenge owing to the optimisation of the absorption, nucleation, and growth of Zn2+. In this study, w e developed an ultrafast, universal, and cost‐effective super‐filling approach to construct a metal–artificial interface–decorated Zn anode in situ. Most zincophilic metals, including Sn, Cu, and Ag, can be used to construct a homogenous interface without any restrictions on the size, morphology, or curvature of the substrates. With Sn as a proof‐of‐concept demonstration, the as‐obtained Sn@Zn anode is conducive for the homogenous Zn nuclei and two‐dimensional (2D) diffusion of Zn2+ ions. Symmetric cells with Sn@Zn electrodes could be operated for over 900 h at different current densities. This superior performance contributed to the attractive electrochemical characteristics of both coin and scaled‐up Sn@Zn//β‐MnO2 cells. Given the facile and cost‐effective fabrication and recyclability of the cells, o ur work enables the efficient design and exploration of Zn anodes for research, industrialisation, and commercialisation purposes. Abstract:Routine electrolyte additives are not effective enough for uniform zinc (Zn) deposition, because they are hard to proactively guide atomic-level Zn deposition. Here, based on underpotential deposition (UPD), we propose an "escort effect" of electrolyte additives for uniform Zn deposition at the atomic level. With nickel ion (Ni2+) additives, we found that metallic Ni deposits preferentially and triggers the UPD of Zn on Ni. This facilitates firm nucleation and uniform growth of Zn while suppressing side reactions. Besides, Ni dissolves back into the electrolyte after Zn stripping with no influence on interfacial charge transfer resistance. Consequently, the optimized cell operates for over 900 h at 1 mA cm-2 (more than 4 times longer than the blank one). Moreover, the universality of "escort effect" is identified by using Cr3+ and Co2+ additives. This work would inspire a wide range of atomic-level principles by controlling interfacial electrochemistry for various metal batteries.

Abstract:The heterostructured interface composed of ZnO rod array and CuZn5 layer is directly grown on Zn foil. The CuZn5 layer with abundant nucleation sites and the electrostatic attraction effect of ZnO rod array synergistically enable the reversible deposition of Zn. This heterostructured interface with specific functional layers provides a feasible strategy for the design of high‐performance metal anodes. Zinc metal has considerable potential as a high‐energy anode material for aqueous batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and environmental friendliness. However, dendrite growth and parasitic reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface remain two serious problems for the Zn metal anode. Here, the heterostructured interface of ZnO rod array and CuZn5 layer is fabricated on the Zn substrate (ZnCu@Zn) to address these two issues. The zincophilic CuZn5 layer with abundant nucleation sites ensures the initial uniform Zn nucleation process during cycling. Meanwhile, the ZnO rod array grown on the surface of the CuZn5 layer can guide the subsequent homogeneous Zn deposition via spatial confinement and electrostatic attraction effects, leading to the dendrite‐free Zn electrodeposition process. Consequently, the derived ZnCu@Zn anode exhibits an ultra‐long lifespan of up to 2500 h with symmetric cells at the current density and capacity of 0.5 mA cm−2/0.5 mA h cm−2. Besides, a remarkable cyclability (75% retention for 2500 cycles at 2 A g−1) is achieved in the ZnCu@Zn||MnO2 full cell with a capacity of 139.7 mA h g−1. This heterostructured interface with specific functional layers provides a feasible strategy for the design of high‐performance metal anodes.

Abstract:Zinc metal has a severe dendrite issue caused by the uneven Zn plating/stripping during continual cycles, which hinders the practical application of ZIBs. The surficial atomic structure of zinc anode plays a decisive role in solving dendrites and improving the electrochemical performance. According to the density functional theory results, Zn (100) plane possesses a much stronger adsorption energy of zinc atom compared with the (002), thus zinc atom preferentially nucleates on the (100) surface. It subsequently continues to grow vertically on (100). Herein, the zinc anode is designed with hexagonal-hole patterns (h-Zn) through a phosphoric acid etching reaction. An abundance of Zn (100) crystal planes are exposed perpendicularly to the anode surface, while the (002) surfaces are at the bottom of these hexagonal holes. Zinc prefers to deposit in hexagonal holes at the (100) surfaces, favoring the restraining of the surficial dendrite growth and accelerating the Zn deposition kinetics. Thus, the symmetric cell using h-Zn exhibits a long cycling lifespan for over 1200 h and extremely low polarization voltage of ≈80 mV at 5 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2 . This work provides an insight into the surficial structure design and crystal plane regulation to fabricate brilliant zinc metal anodes.
