Abstract:Generally, the power grid covers a vast area, making transportation inconvenient. Patrolling the lines requires a significant amount of manpower and time. Manual ground patrols are limited in terms of viewing angles, leading to high workloads and risks for inspectors, while the traditional inspection methods struggle to provide structured and standardized data. On the contrary, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) inspections are not constrained by geographical obstacles, operate at high speeds, and when integrated with SLAM algorithms, they can efficiently accomplish inspection tasks. This article aims to enhance UAV inspection in complex environments by optimizing SLAM. To address the scale information deficiency in the original single-sensor SLAM, Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) was employed in this study. However, in environments with weak textures and low lighting, like during rain and snow, VIO exhibits subpar mapping performance and consumes excessive computing power. To address this issue, the system introduces an enhanced bag-of-words loopback module that iteratively optimizes front-end feature recognition screening rules to conserve computing power. It also enhances the visual feature extraction and maintenance scheme and develops a robust VIO algorithm based on the clustered feature point set of each frame. Ultimately, the system effectively utilizes the EuRoc UAV sensing sequence as input to achieve a smaller absolute trajectory error compared to the OKVIS algorithm. The results of this study have important reference value for the inspection UAV to perceive the real physical environment and build a digital model in a complex environment.
