Abstract:Driven by industrial application, two X-shaped slot antennas carved on a metal box have been designed and implemented using characteristic mode theory. The antennas are designed at 2.4 GHz ZigBee band using X-shaped slot. Both antennas could work in two different resonant modes simultaneously which extends their operational bandwidth. These two antennas were excited in different ways. Antenna I was directly excited on the slot by a coaxial line. The excitation position is obtained by analyzing the characteristic current on the metal surface. By investigating the characteristic electric field distribution inside the metal box, a PIFA-like branch is used to excite the slot for antenna II. Antenna I has a fractional bandwidth of 4% (2.4-2.5 GHz) which covers ZigBee/Bluetooth bands. Antenna II has a fractional bandwidth of 9.7% (2.36-2.6 GHz). The measured results for the prototype are in good agreement with the simulated data. These antennas are designed to track the state of machines working in high temperature environments.
