Abstract:This paper investigates the effect of suffusion on the undrained behavior of an internally unstable soil using the coupled computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (CFD-DEM). A series of eroded specimens are prepared by exerting an upward flow through the granular assembly under a range of hydraulic gradients and suffusion durations. Both the eroded and non-eroded specimens are then subjected to undrained triaxial compression (or equivalently constant volume tests). The results indicate that the erosion rate and volumetric response of the soil skeleton are closely related to the hydraulic conditions. The eroded specimens exhibit a non-uniform distribution of fine particles, higher coordination numbers, higher global void ratio, and lower equivalent intergranular void ratio. The undrained behavior of the specimen changes from a strain hardening behavior before suffusion to a softening behavior with limited flow deformation after suffusion. The undrained shear strength of eroded specimen is enhanced at small axial strain due to the enhanced connectivity of particles, but can increase or decrease at larger strain levels depending on the degree of erosion. It is also observed that both suffusion and shearing can induce some degree of fabric anisotropy by inspecting the directional distribution of contact unit normals and contact normal forces.

Abstract:Seriousness of the problems caused by sediment deposits in urban sewer pipe has been widely recog-nized.Using circulating water tank,scouring tests on the sewer sediment with biological activities were carried out, and the influence of biological activities on erosion characteristics of real in-sewer sediment with different volatile solid (VS)contents under open channel flow by controlling the conditions of dissolved oxygen concentrations and incubation time was also investigated.The results indicate that the biological activities exhibited both positive and negative influ-ences on the erosion law of sewer sediment.It improved the anti-erosion capability by enhancing the binding strength between particles,and the erosion resistance was weakened due to the increase of the porosity of the internal structure of the sediment.Meanwhile,the weak biological activities in the sediment with lower organic content can strengthen the erosion resistance with the incubation time.On the contrary,strong biological activities of sediment with high VS content leaded to the weakening of the erosion resistance.The effect of biological activities on erosion characteristic was also related to the shear force of the flow for the sediment with appropriate VS content.

Abstract:The consolidation behaviors of self-weight dredger-fill were studied by settling column test.The influences of initial density of soil-water mixture,concentration of electrolyte and type of cation in water on consolidation behaviors were investigated.The results showed that the duration for settling of sediment in the 50cm height column was about 3h,and the consolidation process lasted approximately 1-2 d.At the end of consolidation process,the void ratio was in the range of 2-3.The decrease of mixture initial density resulted in the increase both in settling speed and final void ratio.The higher concentration of electrolyte or higher valence of cation in water resulted in higher settling speed of sediment,and the final void ratio will be lower.The influence of cation valence on consolidation was stronger than that of electrolyte concentration.Consequently,the addition of high valence cation such as Ca~(2+) into soil-water mixture can improve the self-weight consolidation speed and density of consolidated dredger fill.The test result also showed that the compressive curve of consolidated dredger fill was linear within the stress range from 0 to 2 kPa.
Laboratory Flume Experiments on Cohesive Sediment Erosion by Oscillating Wall Jet

Abstract:Jet scour, a common method of dredging clay, must be accurately estimated. Cohesive sediment is aggregated by adhesion and is sensitive to erosion when the flow shear is appended with oscillation, as indicated by sediment rheology. On the basis of sediment rheology, this study experimentally investigates the timescale of the erosion of cohesive sediment under an oscillating wall jet in a laboratory flume. The oscillating wall jet is induced by a swinging oblique impingement jet. The erosion of the cohesive sediment was performed under an oscillating wall jet with a fixed flow rate but different oscillating intensities. The morphological properties, scouring depths, and rheological characteristics of the sediment were observed. The results show that when the oscillating frequency is zero or low, the sediment particles scatter similarly to aggregates, forming ridges at the intersection of the scouring slope and bed surface. However, these aggregates and ridges disappear when the oscillating frequency increases. Further, evaluations of the cohesive sediment under different oscillating frequencies indicate that the yield stress decreases with an increase in the scouring frequency. Submerged cohesive sediments tend to fluidize under oscillating shear, which indicates shear thinning behavior. Under the conditions of the oscillating wall jet, the scouring depth of the cohesive sediment increases exponentially with the oscillating intensity.

Abstract:In this study, the erodibility of fluidized cohesive sediments from the seabed of Hangzhou Bay, China, was experimentally investigated in unidirectional open flows. The results indicated that the yield stress is a major factor influencing the erodibility of cohesive sediments. As the yield stress increases, the critical Shields parameter, critical velocity, and critical shear stress increase, but the scour rate decreases. However, a lower yield stress of sediment indicates higher potential of being eroded. Furthermore, the equation for the critical condition of sediment motion, as well as the equation for the scour rate, without considering the degree of fluidization of sediments, may have limited application ranges. Hence, the bed shear stress, critical shear stress, and yield stress should be considered to predict the scour rate. Finally, a modified empirical equation based on the Partheniades (1962) equation is proposed by introducing the yield stress, which is a rheological parameter, in order to calculate the scour rate of cohesive sediments.

The experimental investigation demonstrated clearly that the vibrations applied on the sludge would lead to weakening or broken particle bonding forces. The sediment would deflocculate rapidly and slurry of high fluidity would be formed. The resultant transport of such slurry in pipe would incur less headloss and hence lower energy requirement for the pumping system. Finally, two example applications of the proposed innovation technique of sediment liquefaction are introduced.

Abstract:Using an advanced environmental scanning microscope, the microstructures of underwater sedimentation samples pre/post action of mechanical vibrations were observed and analyzed respectively, and micro?structural changes of the sediment samples by vibrations described. The results show that particle size distribution and the mean particle size decreased, and the clay content and porosity increased duo to the vibrations. The aggregate of sedimentation is significantly and efficiently broken down by the mechanical vibration and more physical and mechanical properties are affected.

Abstract:Friction reduction of sediment-transporting pipeline is very important in dredging engineering. Because of the two rheological behaviors of cohesive sediments, shear-thinning and thixotropy, cohesive sediments can usually be fluidized by the shear load which enables easier transportation of cohesive sediments and produces greater mobility of the sedimentary bed. This paper investigated the effect of the application of sediment fluidization by high frequent mechanical vibrations on the viscosity and transportation property of sludge and slurry using the method of settling ball and capillary rheometer respectively. The experimental results indicate that the high frequent mechanical vibrations can greatly influence the viscosity and the transport velocity of slurry. The vibrations applied on the sludge induce the mutual collision of the sediment particles which can break the bond between particles, so that the fine sediment bulk or sludge of high viscosity becomes a kind of slurry fluid which has quite low viscosity and good flow ability. Moreover, the effect of the vibration on the sediments decreases with the increasing distance to the vibration source, i.e., the closer the sediments to the vibration source, the lower the viscosity are. Meanwhile, the slurry velocity increases with the vibration duration until it reaches a stable value. Finally, two applications of the technique of sediment liquefaction are introduced in shortly.

Abstract:To improve the consolidation of dredged slurry, a combined method of vacuum preloading and electro-osmosis consolidation was applied to a dredged slurry pre-treated with flocculants. In this study, the optimal mixing ratio of two conventional inorganic flocculants was determined by conducting a settling column test. A vacuum preloading and electro-osmosis test was then carried out on the dredged soil after flocculating the soil particles. During the test, the drainage mass and surface settlement were monitored. After the test, the soil moisture content, shear strength, and soil particle size were measured. The test results show that the inorganic flocculant FeCl3 has a better flocculation effect than Al2(SO4)3, and its optimum value is 0.75% in terms of the soil dry weight. The addition of flocculants effectively increased the soil particle size, alleviated the clogging of drainage channels and PVDs (plastic vertical drains), and accelerated the drainage rate. Moreover, the electrical conductivity and electro-kinetic dewatering were improved, thereby increasing the shear strength and soil uniformity.

Abstract:Vacuum-electroosmosis is a common method of foundation treatment; however, it is disadvantaged by fine soil particles clogging the drainage plate. To overcome this issue, this study treated the dredged fill from vacuum-electroosmosis with different additives. The parameters of discharged water, current, water content, and shear strength of soils treated with different amounts of Ca(OH)2, FeCl3, and NaCl were analyzed. The results showed that different additives have different effects on the vacuum-electroosmosis method for reinforcing dredger filling. Excessive additive contents were found to have an adverse effect on vacuum-electroosmosis, and hence, optimum amounts are required for the three additives. On comparing the optimum dosage of these additives, FeCl3 was observed to be the most energy-saving. From the aspect of anode corrosion and the costs involved, Ca(OH)2 was the most economical. For practical engineering applications, Ca(OH)2 was the most preferable additive. The results of this study provide guidance and scientific criteria for similar dredging foundation treatments.
Effect of Sand on the Vacuum Consolidation of Dredged Slurry

Abstract:Vacuum preloading is often used to improve the geotechnical properties of dredged slurry. Although the performance of this method has improved with rapidly developing technology, soil columns usually formed on the drainage boundary induce the decrease of permeability around the boundary, thereby limiting the further development of this method. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method for pretreating the slurry combined with sand prior to vacuum consolidation. This method partially replaces the fine particles with sand to reduce the formation of soil columns. Two groups of vacuum preloading tests were performed to investigate the effect of sand content and sand grain size on the vacuum consolidation of dredged slurry. The test results revealed that for a given sand grain size, increasing the sand content of the sand-slurry mixture increased the pore water drainage and accelerated the dissipation of pore water pressure, thereby increasing the vane shear strength. In contrast, for a constant sand content, the samples containing coarse sand exhibited increased pore water drainage and accelerated dissipation of pore water pressure, thereby increasing the vane shear strength of the soil.

Abstract:The soil arching effect and properties of the flow field have been recognised as key factors for controlling soil erosion behaviour at the opening of underground facilities. However, little attention has been paid to the influence of fine particles on gap-graded soil erosion at the opening. For this reason, a series of simulations that consider different fines content (Fc) and stress condition (p ' v) was performed using the coupled CFD-DEM. Soil erodibility at the opening was found to decrease when the fine particles under-fill the voids (e.g., Fc = 10% and 20%). Conversely, the fine particles start to facilitate soil erosion at the opening when over-filling the voids (e.g., Fc = 30%). The micromechanical analyses, including the evolution of the contact force chain and the coordination number, reveal that when the fine particles under-fill the voids, the increase in soil dilatancy and the supporting effect of the fine particles help stabilise the soil arch at the opening. When the fine particles start to over-fill the voids, the small number of coarse-coarse contacts and the large opening-to-particle size weakens the stability of the soil arch at the opening, increasing soil erodibility compared with Fc = 10% and 20%.
Theoretical Analysis and Experimental Verification of Large Deformation Electro-Osmosis Consolidation Treatment of Dredged Slurry

Abstract:Electro-osmosis (EO) can be used to rapidly treat large areas of dredged slurry. At present, the theory of electro-osmosis consolidation (EOC) needs to be further developed to fit actual dredged slurry treatment scenarios. In this study, governing equations of EOC considering the large deformation constitutive relationship were derived with excess pore water pressure (EPWP) as a variable, and a concise EOC model was established for dredged slurry. Together with boundary conditions and initial conditions, the numerical method was adopted to obtain the finite difference solution for the EOC model. Then, EO experiments with different voltage stages were conducted using a self-designed and large-diameter EOC device, where the variations in current, drainage volume, EPWP, water content and vane shear strength were measured. Moreover, the phenomena of soil cracks, heat release, and electrode corrosion as well as the formation of Fe(OH)3 were recorded during the EO process. Additionally, nonlinear variation laws for effective stress, hydraulic permeability coefficient (HPC) and electro-osmosis permeability coefficient (EOPC) with void ratio of dredged slurry were obtained through indoor tests, in which a self-designed device for testing EOPC was used. Finally, the correctness of the proposed EOC model was verified by comparison with the results of the experiments and Esrig's analytical solution considering the small-strain constitutive relationship, where the consolidation characteristics were analyzed. In conclusion, the large deformation EOC model deduced in this paper could provide a more accurate prediction of the consolidation behavior of dredged slurry.

This study presents an analytical solution for soil consolidation considering the increasing radius of the soil column and time-dependent discharge capacity. Based on the solution, the influence of the radius' increase on the consolidation behavior is found significant when the soil column has low permeability and large final radius, and the increase of formation time can lead to the increase of consolidation speed and final consolidation degree.

Abstract:Silty sand is a kind of typical marine sediment that is widely distributed in the offshore areas of East China. It has been found that under continuous actions of wave pressure, a mass of fine particles will gradually rise up to the surface of silty sand seabeds, i.e., the phenomenon called wave-induced soil erosion. This is thought to be due to the seepage flow caused by the pore-pressure accumulation within the seabed. In this paper, a kind of three-phase soil model (soil skeleton, pore fluid, and fluidized soil particles) is established to simulate the process of wave-induced soil erosion. In the simulations, the analytical solution for wave-induced pore-pressure accumulation was used, and Darcy flow law, mass conservation, and generation equations were coupled. Then, the time characteristics of wave-induced soil erosion in the seabed were studied, especially for the effects of wave height, wave period, and critical concentration of fluidized particles. It can be concluded that the most significant soil erosion under wave actions appears at the shallow seabed. With the increases of wave height and critical concentration of fluidized particles, the soil erosion rate and erosion degree increase obviously, and there exists a particular wave period that will lead to the most severe and the fastest rate of soil erosion in the seabed.

Abstract:Sediment erosion frequently occurs in areas with high incidences of cavitation. The collaborative impact of abrasion and cavitation presents a host of challenges, threats, and damages to hydraulic engineering. However, little is known about the synergistic wear mechanism, and research conclusions remain inconsistent. In this work, relevant studies on synergistic erosion have been collected, classified, and analyzed. Presently, research on synergistic wear primarily operates at the macro and micro levels. The microscopic level enables the visualization and quantification of the process by which particles gain momentum from bubbles, the trajectory of particle acceleration, and the mechanism that triggers strong interactions between bubble-particle. At the macro level, erosion is understood as the summation of damage effects on the wall that is caused by the interaction between a plethora of bubbles of varying scales and numerous particles. The synergistic bubble-particle effect is reflected in the dual inhibiting or promoting mechanism. Furthermore, while numerical simulations could be realized by coupling cavitation, multiphase flow, and erosion models, their accuracy is not infallible. In the future, the dual role of particles, and particles driven by micro-jets or shock waves should be fully considered when establishing a combined erosion model. In addition, enhancing the influence of flow field and boundary parameters around bubbles and utilizing FSI would improve the predictive accuracy of erosion location and erosion rate. This work helps to elucidate the combined wear mechanism of hydraulic machinery components in sediment-laden flow environments and provides a theoretical basis for the design, manufacture, processing, and maintenance of hydraulic machinery.

Abstract:In the vacuum treatment of dredged slurries via prefabricated vertical drains ( PVDs), both filtration and consolidation may happen to dredged slurries when subjected to the vacuum gradient. Similar to the consolidation, the filtration may provide equally useful information on interpreting the constitutive behavior of the slurry. In this paper, a new approach utilizing the filtration process is devised to evaluate the constitutive behaviors of dredged slurries. The approach is composed of a vacuum filtration device and an iterative curve fitting algorithm. Two types of tests, namely step-vacuum filtration and constant-vacuum filtration followed by compression test, must be conducted on the slurry specimens, and only the time variations of the filtrate discharge should be recorded. On the basis of the recorded data, the curve fitting algorithm is adopted for determining the parameters of the constitutive equations. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified through comparing the obtained compressibility and permeability of the slurries with the data provided by the oedometer test and with the empirical relationships from different sources. The comparisons demonstrate that the constitutive relationships determined by the present approach can predict the compressibility and permeability characteristics of dredged slurries with an acceptable degree of accuracy.

Abstract:Offshore structures are subject to environmental loads such as waves, currents, or wind, which may induce cyclic lateral vibration at the foundations. These cyclic vibration loadings may affect the rheological property of the sediments adjacent to the foundation and the stability of the structures. This is especially true when the structures are founded on cohesive sedimentary bed. In this study, the viscosity of soft cohesive sediments adjacent to a vibrating pillar was considered, and as a primary index of the rheological characteristics of the sediments. The investigation was performed using the sinking ball method. The experimental findings indicated that the viscosity of cohesive sediments decrease with increase of the liquidity index and vibration intensity. A simple semi-empirical formula was proposed. The structures of the cohesive sediments were destroyed due to the mechanical vibration, and the sediments were fluidized during vibration loads. The shear strength of the cohesive sediments decreased with increased vibration intensity, not only because of the increased pore water pressure but also the decreased viscosity of cohesive sediments following sediment fluidization.

Abstract:This study improved the vibratory probe compaction (VPC) technique by combining it with well-point dewatering to address the challenges of treating newly dredged silt ground. Specific methods were presented to determine the operating frequency based on multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) results, as well as the spacing between compaction points derived from vertical vibration velocity measurements. The effects of well-point dewatering were analyzed through field monitoring of groundwater level, pore water pressure, and ground settlement. A comparative evaluation of the reinforcement of the improved and conventional VPC techniques was conducted through in-situ tests. The results indicate that continuous dewatering suppresses the excessive rise of excess pore water pressure during compaction, effectively eliminating equipment tilting and settlement due to sandblasting water, and enhancing construction efficiency by over 40%. The average standard penetration blow count ( N 63.5 ) increases from 4.3 to 11.4, the ground bearing capacity reaches 140.8 kPa and the average ground settlement is 42.5 cm. The cone resistance and sleeve resistance also exhibit higher values, and the risk of soil liquefaction is effectively eliminated. The experiments and practices provide some successful experiences for the wider application of this technique in similar newly reclamation grounds.

Abstract:Ultrasonic cavitation erosion of reservoir rocks in distilled water with and without SiO2 micro-abrasives (mean diameter 0.5 μm, mass concentration 1–7 wt%) are conducted. The erosion characteristics of eroded rocks are measured and analyzed. Both the area of cavitation damage zones and the surface roughness are increased when rocks are eroded in water-abrasive mixture. Compared with distilled water, the mass loss in 3 wt% water-abrasive mixture has improved by 69.66–104.23% (average 81.41%) for sandstone, 495.05–665.15% (average 557.38%) for shale, and 158.49–211.92% (average 188.16%) for granite during an erosion time of 5 ∼ 60 min. The promoted erosion can be explained by the synergistic effect of cavitation and micro-abrasives. The failure mechanisms are elucidated for different types of rocks. The erosion of reservoir rocks results from the peeling-off of mineral grains and the breakdown of large mineral crystals. Numerous micro-fractures and pores are produced in the surface of the eroded rocks, creating additional permeable channels for fluid flow. The results demonstrate that the presence of micro-abrasives can increase the ultrasonic cavitation erosion of reservoir rocks, indicating that the addition of micro-abrasives is feasible to enhance the performance of ultrasonic treatment for oil wells in petroleum industry.
