Abstract:Vehicular communications have attracted more and more attention recently from both industry and academia due to its strong potential to enhance road safety, improve traffic efficiency, and provide rich on-board information and entertainment services. In this paper, we discuss fundamental physical layer issues that enable efficient vehicular communications and present a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art research. We first introduce vehicular channel characteristics and modeling, which are the key underlying features differentiating vehicular communications from other types of wireless systems. We then present schemes to estimate the time-varying vehicular channels and various modulation techniques to deal with high-mobility channels. After reviewing resource allocation for vehicular communications, we discuss the potential to enable vehicular communications over the millimeter wave bands. Finally, we identify the challenges and opportunities associated with vehicular communications.

Abstract:This book presents the current research on safety message dissemination in vehicular networks, covering medium access control and relay selection for multi-hop safety message broadcast. Along with an overall overview of the architecture, characteristics, and applications of vehicular networks, the authors discuss the challenging issues in the research on performance improvement for safety applications, and provide a comprehensive review of the research literature. A cross layer broadcast protocol is included to support efficient safety message broadcast by jointly considering geographical location, physical-layer channel condition, and moving velocity of vehicles in the highway scenario. To further support multi-hop safety message broadcast in a complex road layout, the authors propose an urban multi-hop broadcast protocol that utilizes a novel forwarding node selection scheme. Additionally, a busy tone based medium access control scheme is designed to provide strict priority to safety applications in vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. This book offers useful insights into protocol design and inspires a new line of thinking in performance improvements for safety applications in vehicular networks. Abstract:Vehicular communications, referring to information exchange among vehicles, pedestrians, and infrastructures, have become very popular and been widely studied recently due to its great potential to support intelligent transportation and various safety applications. Via vehicular communications, manually driving vehicles and autonomous vehicles can collect useful information to improve traffic safety and support infotainment services. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent research on enabling efficient vehicular communications from the network layer perspective. First, we introduce general applications and unique characteristics of vehicular networks and the corresponding classifications. Based on different driving patterns of vehicles, we divide vehicular networks into two categories, i.e., manually driving vehicular networks and automated driving vehicular networks, and then discuss the available communication techniques, network structures, routing protocols, and handoff strategies applied in these vehicular networks. Finally, we identify the challenges confronted by the current vehicular communications and present the corresponding research opportunities.

Abstract:Vehicular networking provides the communication backbone for connecting vehicles with monitoring systems and other vehicles to exchange all types of information for safe and guided driving. Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V21 or v2i) is a bi-communication model that provides vehicles with road information delivered using infrastructure wireless nodes and vehicles over an ad hoc network (VANET). Similarly, vehi-cle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication allows motor vehicles to exchange locations and speeds with each other over wireless links to prevent collisions and traffic congestion. Vehicular networking employs dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) devices that operate in the 5.9 GHz band with bandwidth of 75 MHz and an approximate range of 300 meters. Wi-Fi is also a candidate technology to support data transmissions in vehicular communications. Recently, autonomous cars emerged as unmanned auto-driven vehicles that can connect to the environment and navigate to destinations without human intervention. This model of vehicular networking is referred to as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. Cel-lular-V2X (C-V2X) is one of the next-generation technologies that stream data to vehicles over a cellular band for automated driving solutions. The initial C-V2X standard was completed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as part of Release 14 and 15. However, the emergence of fifth generation (5G) networks that support multiple radio interfaces of various technologies over many bands motivate new scenarios for V2X communications. Autonomous vehicle communications is supported by 5G as part of the Ultra-reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC) service slice. This means that we expect vehicles to be able to connect to 700, 3400–3800 MHz bands to comply with the transmission systems for the URLLC spectrum band. This implies new work that is necessary to define what could be the final architecture for V2X within 5G networks. In addition, the enablers for advanced safety features are higher throughput, higher reliability, multi-ple-bands and precise positioning, and very low latency. Those requirements are undergoing study as part of the incoming 3GPP Release 16.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networking is an emerging technology for future on-the-road communications. Due to the virtue of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are expected to enable a plethora of communication-based automotive applications including diverse in-vehicle infotainment applications and road safety services. Even though vehicles are organized mostly in an ad hoc manner in the network topology, directly applying the existing communication approaches designed for traditional mobile ad hoc networks to large-scale VANETs with fast-moving vehicles can be ineffective and inefficient. To achieve success in a vehicular environment, VANET-specific communication solutions are imperative. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of various radio channel access protocols and resource management approaches, and discuss their suitability for infotainment and safety service support in VANETs. Further, we present recent research activities and related projects on vehicular communications. Potential challenges and open research issues are also discussed.

Abstract:The rapid development of the Intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) industry has stimulated technological innovation in energy and communication while also highlighting the need for effective policies and road safety measures. Understanding and addressing road safety issues in the context of ICVs can contribute to ICV development and safe driving. This paper employs a knowledge mapping approach to scientifically and intuitively demonstrate research on the road safety issues of ICV over the last decade. By utilizing bibliometric tools such as CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and SciMAT, a total of 3661 original articles from the Web of Science are examined to explore three aspects. Firstly, the study investigates the collaborative relationships among authors and institutions within the industry. Secondly, it summarizes major research topics by analyzing and clustering keywords. Lastly, the paper identifies research hotspots and predicts future research directions. The findings reveal a dynamic field characterized by close collaboration among diverse institutions, with China and the United States emerging as the most active countries and mathematics and computer science journals becoming mainstream. According to three bibliometric tools, the research topics primarily revolve around three areas: Vehicular ad hoc Networks (VANET), intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and network security. Machine learning and V2X communication are predicted to be essential research topics in the next stage. Research on traffic accidents still has potential as the number of ICVs increases.

Abstract:Embedded with advanced sensors, cameras and processors, the emerging automated driving vehicles are capable of sensing the environment and conducting automobile operation, paving the way to modern intelligent transportation systems (ITS) with high safety and efficiency. On the other hand, vehicular communication networks (VCNs) connect vehicles, infrastructures, clouds, and all other devices with communication modules, whereby vehicles can obtain local and global information to make intelligent operation decisions. Although the sensing-based automated driving technologies and VCNs have been investigated independently, their interactions and mutual benefits are still underdeveloped. In this article, we argue that VCNs have attractive potentials to enhance the on-board sensing-based automated vehicles from different perspectives, such as driving safety, transportation efficiency, as well as customer experiences. A case study is conducted to demonstrate that the traffic jam can be relieved at intersections with automated driving vehicles coordinated with each other through VCNs. Furthermore, we highlight the critical yet interesting issues for future research, based on the specific requirements posed by automated driving on VCNs.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networks ( VANETs ) and the services they support are an essential part of intelligent transportation. Through physical technologies, applications, protocols, and standards, they help to ensure traffic moves efficiently and vehicles operate safely. This article surveys the current state of play in VANETs development. The summarized and classified include the key technologies critical to the field, the resource-management and safety applications needed for smooth operations, the communications and data transmission protocols that support networking, and the theoretical and environmental constructs underpinning research and development, such as graph neural networks and the Internet of Things. Additionally, we identify and discuss several challenges facing VANETs, including poor safety, poor reliability, non-uniform standards, and low intelligence levels. Finally, we touch on hot technologies and techniques, such as reinforcement learning and 5G communications, to provide an outlook for the future of intelligent transportation systems.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) play an essential role in road safety through Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communications. In this paper, we offer a survey of the state-of-the-art literature about VEINS tool set which is an extraordinary vehicle and network simulation framework for VANET researchers. This paper identifies and classifies the existing research into a comprehensive taxonomy that we called Applications, Solutions and Networks so as to provide an organized survey of safety-related VEINS-based literature. This review can be used by the research community to understand where gaps exist in the literature of particular real-world applicability or integration with emerging technologies, as well as socio-economic factors associated with deployment of VEINS-based safety applications. In addition, we evaluate the VEINS framework including what it provides (e.g., better simulation accuracy), safety testing is more comprehensive as well as other technologies that are used may have like in our case 5G and AI. We also refer to its affordability, growth-ability and adaptiveness along with real-time data analytics commented the author. The constraints of VEINS are also discussed, for instance the bridge from simulation to reality, computational complexity and problems with regard to emerging technologies integration. We discuss future research directions to further enrich the potential of VEINS by incorporating Beyond-5G technologies, cutting-edge AI algorithms, blockchain (BC) for communication security and reliability, semi-virtual/hybrid simulation environments and a wider range of V2X communications. It includes case studies and applications which illustrate how general safety scenarios (e.g., collision avoidance, emergency vehicle prioritization), road hazard detection can be simulated using VEINS highlighting the importance of this approach for practicing engineers. In all, the wide-ranging review would be useful to researchers and practitioners working toward ensuring a secure and efficient vehicular network design.

Abstract:VANETs enable information exchange among vehicles, other end devices and public networks, which plays a key role in road safety/infotainment, intelligent transportation systems, and self-driving systems. As vehicular connectivity soars, and new on-road mobile applications and technologies emerge, VANETs are generating an ever-increasing amount of data, requiring fast and reliable transmissions through VANETs. On the other hand, a variety of VANETs related data can be analyzed and utilized to improve the performance of VANETs. In this article, we first review VANETs technologies to efficiently and reliably transmit big data. Then, the methods employing big data for studying VANETs characteristics and improving VANETs performance are discussed. Furthermore, we present a case study where machine learning schemes are applied to analyze VANETs measurement data for efficiently detecting negative communication conditions.

Abstract:Recent technical innovation has driven the evolution of autonomous vehicles. To improve safety as well as on-road vehicular experience, vehicles should be connected with each other or to vehicular networks. Some specification groups, e.g., IEEE and 3GPP, have studied and released vehicular communication requirements and architecture. IEEE’s Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment focuses on dedicated and short-range communication, while 3GPP’s New Radio V2X supports not only sidelink but also uplink communication. The 3GPP Release 16, which supports 5G New Radio, offers evolved functionalities such as network slice, Network Function Virtualization, and Software-Defined Networking. In this paper, we define and design a vehicular network architecture compliant with 5G core networks to enable and support autonomous driving. As a validation example, a high-definition map needs to contain the context of trajectory for localization and planning of autonomous driving vehicles. We also propose new methods by which autonomous vehicles can push and pull map content efficiently, without causing bottlenecks on the network core. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method via network simulations and our autonomous driving vehicle on the road. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method improves the performance of vehicular content delivery in real-world road environments.

Abstract:Nowadays, inter-vehicle networks are a viable communication scenario that greatly contributes to daily work, and its issues are gaining more and more attention every day. These days, space networks are growing and developing. There are numerous new uses for this new kind of network communication. One of the most significant daily programs in the world today is road traffic. For human growth, passenger and freight transportation is essential. Thus, fresh advancements in the areas of improved safety features, environmentally friendly fuel, etc., are developed daily. In order to improve safety and regulate traffic, a new application program is used. However, because of their stringent security standards, these initiatives have an impact on traffic safety. Since driving is one of the things that necessitates traffic safety, this area needs to be made more secure. Providing trustworthy driving data is crucial to achieving this goal, aside from the automated portion of the operation. Drivers would greatly benefit from accurate weather descriptions or early warnings of potential dangers (such as traffic bottlenecks or accidents).
