Abstract:This paper presents a new image segmentation algorithm based on the pulse coupled neural network (PCNN) and histogram method for infrared images. The proposed algorithm abandons entirely the mechanism of the time exponential decaying function and uses the results of the gray-level histogram analysis as the interior thresholds of PCNN, meanwhile, it keeps the advantage of briding small spatial gaps and minor intensity variations. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can get more complete region and edge information in infrared images. It is also of much lower complexity and of high speed than the original one.

Abstract:Abstract Image binary segmentation is the most fundamental and important preprocessing in image analysis and pattern recognition, which directly affects analyses and results of post-processing. It is difficult problems that image binary segmentation is performed efficiently and adaptively. Because of poor quality of the image, some traditional automatically segmentations only based on histogram can not exactly or difficultly extract features of objects. In this paper, a new method of image binary segmentation based on improved Pulse-Coupled Neural Networks is presented. It is implemented by characteristics of Pulse-Coupled Neural Networks. Compared with other method, it is completely adaptive and precision in image binary segmentation. It is especially useful for low contrast image and segmentation of multiple objects. In our experiment, it is proved feasibly and efficiently.

Abstract:The methods proposed in this paper improved the classical pulse coupled neural network (PCNN). Through adding the extracted edges of the objects into the classical PCNN, the synchronous bursts of non-linking neurons with different input were generated in the proposed PCNN model in order to realize the multi-object segmentation. The paper provided the criterion of choosing the dominant parameter (the linking strength β) automatically, which determines the synchronous-burst stimulus range. At the same time, the paper designed an automatic image segmentation algorithm in order to stimulate its application in the testing segmentation precision. The experimental results for the low-noise image show that the correct rate of the proposed model is over 95% and the property is superior to the classical Fast linking model.

Abstract:A new image segmentation method based on Pulse Coupled Neural Network(PCNN) was proposed,in order to solve the problem of determining the optimal result and calculating the nonlinear approach of pulse threshold.In this paper,the threshold was adjusted dynamically and linearly.And the cyclic iterative times of PCNN was got by the two-dimensional maximum correlation criterion.Then,the receptive part of the PCNN was modified by the characteristics of the medium filter to suppress the noise.Experimental results show that the method can achieve better image segmentation and has a common applicability.

Abstract:In order to overcome the weak adaptability and the difficulty in selecting the adaptive threshold of the traditional image binarization and to improve the reliability lacking in the traditional single evaluation of image segmentation, an image binarization method based on pulse-coupled neural network (PCNN) is investigated, and the corresponding parameters are selected. Afterwards, a composite segmentation evaluation method comprehensively considering various evaluation criteria is proposed. Experimental results show that the PCNN-based image binarization method is of high accuracy and is suitable for the segmentation of varied images, and that, as compared with the traditional single evaluation methods, the proposed composite method can evaluates the performances of segmentation algorithms more objectively and accurately.

Abstract:A modified simplified Pulse Coupled Neural Network (PCNN) model is proposed in this article based on simplified PCNN. Some work have done to enrich this model, such as imposing restrictions items of the inputs, improving linking inputs and internal activity of PCNN. A self-adaptive parameter setting method of linking coefficient and threshold value decay time constant is proposed here, too. At last, we realized image segmentation algorithm for five pictures based on this proposed simplified PCNN model and PSO. Experimental results demonstrate that this image segmentation algorithm is much better than method of SPCNN and OTSU.

Abstract:To overcome the limitation of the pulse-coupled neural network(PCNN) for its application in processing of color images,the hue data were introduced into the basic PCNN model by adopting the signal generator to control the internal activities of cells.The pixels with the same grey level and different hue data were pulsed separately in the double-input PCNN.It is indicated that the double-input PCNN can achieve the segmentation of color images and is robust to noises.The experimental results on synthetic images and natural images verify the validity of the model.

Abstract:Pulse Coupled Neural Networks(PCNN) is a new Neural Networks which was developed and formed in the 1990's. The key point of PCNN is modulated coupled mechanism, while Coupled results produce internal activity. The output of PCNN is binary image sequence, which call be considered the results of threshold segmentation. In this paper, the matrix made by internal activity is regarded as a breadth of image, then which call be conjoined with the technique of traditional threshold segmentation. The application of minimum cross-entropy criterion in the technique of image segmentation makes the discrepancy of information content between image segmented and image after segmentation to be least. A kind of novel algorithm of image segmentation setting on cycle iterations automatically is Put forward, after traditional PCNN threshold segmentation mechanism improved with the combination OF minimum cross-entropy criterion. Theory analysis and experimental results all show that the best segmentation output can be drew from the simple and sophisticated image using this new algorithm.

Abstract:This paper introduces an approach for image segmentation by using pulse coupled neural network (PCNN), based on the phenomena of synchronous pulse bursts in the animal visual cortexes. The neighborhoods considering magnitude and distribution of the pixels are modeled into a factor to control the linking, further, control the internal activity. Segmentation criteria based on majority rule controls the process, and threshold adjustment within one iterative ensures the integrated result. Experiments on several types of image are implemented with the proposed method and the experimental results comparing with classical methods demonstrate its validity.

Abstract:As Pulse Coupled Neural Network(PCNN) in image segmentation has to adjust the network parameters by manual operation for several times,this paper proposed a automatic image segmentation method based on the PCNN.The effect factors on setting PCNN parameters in an image were analyzed and an adaptive segment protocol was invited to divide the images into several sub-pieces with the similar inside complexities.By which,the weakness that the same parameter could not segment exactly the region with quite different complexities in an image at the same time was overcome.Furthermore,the index of Activity Degree of Local Area(ADLA) proposed by the paper was used to determine the PCNN model parameters for different sub-pieces adaptively and to avoid the manual operation for important parameter selection in the traditional PCNN image segmentation.Finally,the best result was chosen from the binary-result sequences with the max two-dimension Tallis entropy protocol.The experiments proved that segmented figure is clear,complete and has excellent performance,even in conditions of a low contrast or a changeable background.Compared with the traditional PCNN segmentation methods,the proposed method not only can determine the PCNN model parameters automatically,and its indexes on quantitative evaluation of the segmentation result,such as Uniformity Measure(UM),Regional Contrast(CR),Shape Measure(SM) and Comprehensive Index(CI) are all 12% better than those of the traditional PCNN method.

Abstract:Recent researches indicate that pulse coupled neural network (PCNN) can be implemented on image segmentation effectively.However,it is necessary to determine the near optimal parameters of the network to achieve satisfactory segmentation results for different images.Up to now,the parameters are always adjusted manually and there is no method of adaptive parameter determination,which impedes its application in automatic image segmentation.To solve the problem,this paper brings forward an adaptive segmentation method based on a simplified PCNN with the parameters determined by images' spatial and grey characteristics automatically.Segmentations on various images are implemented with the proposed method and the experimental results demonstrate its validity and robustness.

Abstract:In the image processing,accurate image segmentation can speed up the follow-up processing,and has better ap-plicability. The four methods based on entropy function,criterion function,parameter adjustment and improved pulse coupled neural network (PCNN) model used in the image segmentation are offered according to the application of PCNN model de-veloped in recent years. Abstract:Recent researches indicate that pulse coupled neural network (PCNN) can be effectively utilized in image segmentation. However, the near optimal parameter set should always be predetermined to achieve desired segmentation result for different images, which impedes its application for segmentation of various images. So far as that is concerned, there is no method of adaptive parameter determination for automatic real-time image segmentation. Abstract:Pulse-coupled neural network (PCNN), which simulates the synchronous oscillation phenomenon in the visual cortex of small mammals, has become a useful model for image processing. In the model, several parameters were usually required to properly set for adjusting the behavior of neurons. However, undesired behavior may occur owing to inappropriate parameters setting. To alleviate this problem, we propose to simplify some parameters of PCNN, and apply it into image segmentation. First, exponential delay factors are abandoned for adjusting the neuron input, and the neural input is then associated with image information as well as pulse output. In addition, neural threshold inherent in PCNN is simplified as an adaptive threshold related to image properties, allowing our model to easily alter the behavior of neurons. Particularly, the characteristic of synchronous pulse is thereby kept by introducing a fuzzy clustering method, instead of linking coefficient for grouping pixels with similarity and spatial proximity through iterative computation. Experimental results on synthetic and real infrared images show that the proposed model has high performance of segmentation. Furthermore, our model has better adaptability for segmenting real-world images when compared with several existing PCNN-based methods and some classic segmentation methods.
Adaptive Simplified PCNN Parameter Setting for Image Segmentation

Abstract:In order to extend the pulse coupled neural network (PCNN) to image segmentation, this paper improves the original PCNN model and simplifies its parameters, and then presents a method for adaptive parameter settings. The proposed method adopts the relationship between the neural threshold and the region characteristic of pulse output. Meanwhile, an optimal method is introduced to find the optimal linking coeffcient value. As a result, our model can iteratively segments the targets from the background. Experimental results on synthetic and real infrared images demon-strate that the proposed method has better adaptability to the complicated images when compared with the widely used threshold and two state-of-the-art PCNN models, and shows good robustness for noisy images.

Abstract:The region growing pulse coupled neural network (PCNN) algorithm is an efficient method for multi-value image segmentation. However, as a kind of PCNN models, choosing appropriate parameters are usually difficult. This paper brings forward a new approach which improves the region growing PCNN model by modifying the linking channel function and decreases the complexity of adjusting parameters. The region growing PCNN is not effective when processing the edge pixels between different regions because the edge pixels and central pixels are dealt with unfairly. In order to overcome this disadvantage, the proposed method processes the edge pixels by setting the edge pixels and central pixels to receive same linking input if they are in similar condition. Computer simulations prove it can process the edge pixels efficiently and obtain clear boundaries between different regions.

Abstract:In this paper, researches are deep done on using PCNN-pulse coupled neural network, a new artificial neural network based on biology, to restore binary images and smooth images. Meanwhile, the image restoration algorithm based on PCNN is brought forward. The results of computer simulations show that noisy binary images can be restored efficiently by using PCNN and the SNRs of restored images by using PCNN is higher than by using one of two usual image restoration methods, the median filter and the mean filter.

Abstract:A segmented color image compression coding algorithm based on Pulse Coupled Neural Network (PCNN) is presented in this paper. PCNN has the characteristics of pulse couple and changeable threshold, through which the adjacent pixels that have approximate gray values can be activated simultaneously. It means PCNN have the advantage over realizing the region segmentation. With the help of the adjustment of the parameters of PCNN, ideal segmented images that contain the details of original image can be achieved. For the better approximation of irregular segmented regions, the Gram-Schmidt method is adopted, by which a group of orthonormal base functions are constructed from a group of linear independent initial base functions. Simulations results based on RGB, HSV color space etc, show that the algorithm presented in this paper has excellent practicality in the fields where the details of image need to be stored.

Abstract:A new method,called Grayscale Iteration Threshold Pulse Coupled Neural Network(GIT-PCNN),was proposed for image segmentation.The GIT-PCNN reduced the required parameters of conventional PCNN and the exponentially decaying threshold was improved to be related to the grayscale statistics of the original image.When GIT-PCNN was applied to image segmentation,no parameter or iteration time needs to be determined since the segmentation could be completed by one time of PCNN firing process.Therefore,GIT-PCNN did not require specific rule as the iteration stop condition.GIT-PCNN made good use of the grayscale information of the original image and the pulse characteristics of PCNN that the neurons associated with each group of spatially connected pixels with similar intensities tended to pulse together when partitioning images.The experimental results show that GIT-PCNN is better than classical PCNN-based segmentation algorithms on visual evaluation,subjective indices and speed performance.
