Abstract:Nowadays, more and more J2EE applications are deployed in distributed environment. Existing session management models are no longer competent in this context. In order to satisfy the demand on performance, scalability and reliability of session maintenance, this paper presents an improved HTTP session management model in distributed environment with a simplified heterogeneous front-end and a distributed cache based back-end. Theoretical analysis based on graph theory and probability theory is applied to both existing model and the improved model, which proves that the latter is much better in many aspects. A prototype session manager based on this model is implemented. The result of a performance benchmark upon a standard J2EE application shows its improvement.

Abstract:With the development of international trade, container transportation increases rapidly. Loading large quantities of containers requires efficient port operations and an efficient container stowage plan (CSP). A CSP is the placement of containers onto the shipping plan slots, which should decrease loading cost and keep the ship stability. The yard operational efficiency, ship stability, and operational safety are the major factors that should be considered in port loading and unloading. Since, factors are related to others, to generate a CSP is proven to be NP-complete. This paper proposes a decision-support framework for determining a shipment plan, which is to achieve the optimal shipment objects by a planning model. The experimental results show that the proposed framework can improve the operating efficiency of the storage yard while keeping the ship’s stability and reducing the dangerous loading scenes.

Abstract:With the continuous growth of port container throughput, it is difficult to meet the port production demand by simply configuring automation equipments to improve the operation efficiency of machinery. The container truck scheduling and yard crane scheduling are the two important scheduling links in container terminals. At the same time, there is a tight coupling between them. Thus, the joint scheduling of container trucks and yard cranes is necessary to improve the operation efficiency of container terminals. In this paper, the joint real-time scheduling of trucks and yard cranes is mathematically modeled, and is solved by the elite genetic algorithm. Finally, a variety of scheduling strategies are compared to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
JACO: JAva Code Layout Optimizer Enabling Continuous Optimization without Pausing Application Services

Abstract:Many Java applications in data centers suffer from severe processor pipeline frontend bottlenecks, which can be mitigated by profile-guided code layout optimizations (PGCLO). To maximize optimization opportunities, state-of-the-art PGCLO solutions adopt continuous optimization to ensure that the code layout consistently matches ever-changing application control flow characteristics. However, existing continuous optimizations inevitably pause the application to execute the new code completely, which leads to high response latency and significantly deteriorates user experience. In this paper, we propose JACO, a novel profile-guided Java code layout optimizer, enabling continuous optimization without pausing application services. The key idea of JACO is to enable the execution of both the old and new code simultaneously rather than completely switching to the new code. In particular, JACO is composed of three components: (1) A lightweight profiler captures the control flow information of the application and then generates an optimized function order. (2) A control flow switcher generates new code based on optimized function order and switches the application to execute the new code without pausing the application services. (3) A selective code reclaimer only frees the memory occupied by the inactive old code. We evaluated JACO on both open-source applications and real-world applications from a world-leading company. JACO achieved up to a 16.36% performance improvement for real-world applications. The state-of-the-art approach introduces up to 37.93x latency overhead that will interrupt application services, while JACO only introduces a negligible 7% latency overhead.

Abstract:The J2EE application server provides a primary solution to develop enterprise-wide applications, which uses containers to hold application components. The container framework relieve developers' burden greatly because it encapsulates all the system level services and the developers are able to use these services directly without knowing underlying details. The processing capacity of application servers is becoming more and more important with the requirements of achieving higher performance and higher scalability. This paper uses ECperf, a performance benchmark tool for application servers, to studies the performance issues of the application server OnceAS, which is developed by the Institute of software, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and presents optimization approaches including bean instance pools and high speed naming service. These optimizations are implemented in OnceAS and proved to be effective through ECperf benchmark evaluation.

Abstract:Container-based operation system (OS) level virtualization has been adopted by many edge-computing platforms. However, for an edge server, inter-container communications, and container management consume significant CPU resources. Given an application composed of interdependent tasks, the number of such operations is closely related to the dependency between the scheduled tasks. Thus, to improve the execution efficiency of an application in an edge server, task scheduling and task containerizing need to be considered together. To this end, a joint task scheduling and containerizing (JTSC) scheme is developed in this article. Experiments are first carried out to quantify the resource utilization of container operations. System models are then built to capture the features of task execution in containers in an edge server with multiple processors. With these models, joint task scheduling and containerizing is conducted as follows. First, tasks are scheduled without considering containerization, which results in initial schedules. Second, based on system models and guidelines gained from the initial schedules, several containerization algorithms are designed to map tasks to containers. Third, task execution durations are updated by adding the time for inter-container communications, and then the task schedules are updated accordingly. The JTSC scheme is evaluated through extensive simulations. The results show that it reduces inefficient container operations and enhances the execution efficiency of applications by 60 percent.

Abstract:Container technology is driving the transformation of Container as a Service (CaaS), which calls for an optimal solution of container management. In this paper, we present a two-stage framework of container management in the cloud, which includes container placement and container migration. Specifically, we investigate the container placement strategy of cloud servers for load balancing in a long time scale. In a short time scale, we investigate the container migration strategy among the cloud servers for minimizing the migration cost while maintaining the degree of load balance. Both of the strategies are formulated as constrained optimization problems. We propose Balance Aware Container Placement (BACP) algorithm and Adaptive Threshold Container Migration (ATCM) algorithm to solve the optimization problems in different time scales. Furthermore, workload prediction of the containers is proposed to enhance the solution. We show by experiments that we can achieve the load balance while reducing the migration cost. Moreover, the proposed algorithm outperforms the meta-heuristic algorithms, i.e., PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) and CRO (Coral Reef Optimization).

Abstract:As an important part of an application server, the distributed transaction manager mainly provides transaction processing ability in distributed environments, and its performance is one of the limitations against the throughput of distributed transaction processing software running on an application server. How to optimize the performance of a distributed transaction manager in the framework of J2EE application server is discussed, and the implementation of performance optimization on our distributed transaction manager ISTX is also presented. The experimental results show that the performance optimization on ISTX can greatly improve distributed transaction processing performance under the precondition of guaranteeing reliability.
Container Migration Mechanism for Load Balancing in Edge Network Under Power Internet of Things

Abstract:As a novel computing technology closer to business ends, edge computing has become an effective solution for delay sensitive business of power Internet of Things (IoT). However, the uneven spatial and temporal distribution of business requests in edge network leads to a significant difference in business busyness between edge nodes. Due to the natural lightweight and portability, container migration has become a critical technology for load balancing, thereby optimizing the resource utilization of edge nodes. To this end, this paper proposes a container migration-based decision-making (CMDM) mechanism in power IoT. First, a load differentiation matrix model between edge nodes is constructed to determine the timing of container migration. Then, a container migration model of load balancing joint migration cost (LBJC) is established to minimize the impact of container migration while balancing the load of edge network. Finally, the migration priority of containers is determined from the perspective of resource correlation and business relevance, and by introducing a pseudo-random ratio rule and combining the local pheromone evaporation with global pheromone update at the same time, a migration algorithm based on modified Ant Colony System (MACS) is designed to utilize the LBJC model and thus guiding the choice of possible migration actions. The simulation results show that compared with genetic algorithm (GA) and Space Aware Best Fit Decreasing (SABFD) algorithm, the comprehensive performance of CMDM in load balancing joint migration cost is improved by 7.3% and 12.5% respectively.

Abstract:This paper addresses the single and multiple container loading problems, which forms the core engine of a warehouse management system we are contracted to implement for a Hong Kong logistics company. We propose to use dynamic prioritization to handle the awkward box types, whereas the box type with a higher priority is packed onto lower surfaces of the container for the single container case, or packed in earlier containers for the multiple container case. The solution found in one iteration of the algorithm is analyzed, and the priorities are updated and used in the next iteration. This approach provides very competitive results using standard benchmark data sets as compared with other methods. It helps to reduce the difficulty in system implementation and maintenance, because the algorithm is easy to understand for practitioners in the local industry, and it is applicable for both the single and multiple container loading problems at the same time. In addition, we find the existing test data for the multiple container loading problem to be deficient and supplement them by generating new test data consisting of 2800 test cases. Last but not least, our algorithm has been packaged into a software component with full graphical user interface and integrated into a warehouse management system for daily operations.

Abstract:J2EE-based Web applications are becoming increasingly ubiquitous and with their increasing adoption, the performance is the attention focus and the most important factor of evaluating the system by users. In this paper, we present a systematic solution for performance testing and optimization of J2EE-based Web applications. The solution helps to identify and eliminate bottlenecks in the application design and ensures that systems are designed to meet their quality of service requirements. This paper firstly analyses the architecture of J2EE-based Web applications and performance testing principle, and then improves the JMeter testing framework for meeting the more concurrent users. Lastly, performance testing for J2EE-based Web applications is done; it finds performance bottlenecks and puts forward optimum measures, and compares the performance with the former one.

Abstract:Summary Due to the high performance of cloud computing‐based microservices, a wide range of industries and fields rely on them. In a containerized cloud, traditional resource management strategies are typically used to allocate and migrate virtual machines. A major problem for cloud service providers is resource allocation for containers, which directly affects system performance and resource consumption. In this paper, we propose a joint optimization of load balancing and resource allocation in the cloud using an optimal container management strategy. We aim to enhance scheduling efficiency and reduce costs by improving the container's schedule requested digitally by users. An improved backtracking search optimization (IBSO) algorithm is used to allocate resources between end‐users/IoT devices and the cloud under the consideration of service‐level agreements. Mechanic quantum recurrent neural networks (MQ‐RNNs) are designed to allocate, consolidate, and migrate containers in cloud environments. The various simulation measures used to validate the proposed strategy are energy consumption, number of active servers, number of interruptions, total cost, runtime, and statistical measures.

Abstract:In this project, we design and implement flow control in a J2EE application server by applying control theory and dynamic probabilistic scheduling. The goal is to regulate workload at the web front end to prevent overloading the shared database, while keeping fairness over all requests. Since workload in an enterprise application has a much larger variance in terms of resource demand, classical control theory does not work well. We supplement the feedback control with workload classification and dynamic queue scheduling, and find that correct queueing policy can simplify the control design. The experimental results show that our method effectively prevented database overloading and thus preventing deadlock without resources overprovisioning, as well as keeping client response time low.

Abstract:Regarding the shortcomings found with the traditional method of integrating a J2EE (Java 2 platform enterprise edition) Web Container, a two-layered Web container integration framework is proposed: the outer layer is independent of the Web container implementation and is the interface between the Web container and management tools, deployment tools and other modules; the inner layer is an extension to the Web container. The framework has been implemented on the J2EE application server PKUAS (Peking University Application Server). Test results have shown that this framework can satisfy the design goals of a pluggable, unified configurable Web container, and its performance is satisfactory.

Abstract:How to develop the software process models that satisfy the organization's standards and the characteristics of software projects, with improving it continuously, is a difficulty for software organizations. A process management tool supporting component based process development and hierarchical management mechanism which is named JBPM(Jade Bird Process Management) makes use of the two-layer hierarchical process management idea of "organization-project" in CMM, and employs the software process requirement specification and software lifecycle process framework from ISO/IEC std. 12207 and IEEE std. 1517, and introduces the component-based development methods to the software process development. JBPM provides tool supporting for the above, and thus proposes a good solution for the issue of process management for software organizations.
