A Historical Study on Technological Catch-up of Semiconductor Industry in the Twentieth Century

Abstract:History of development of semiconductor industry in the twentieth century underwent four major transitions. Starting at the Boston area, the center of semiconductor industry shifted to Silicon Valley in the 1970s and transferred to Japan in the 1980s. In the 1990s, Silicon Valley revived and South Korea caught up afterwards. These countries and areas developed various and unique developmental and frog-leaping paths; meanwhile, they showed common characteristics such as seizing windows of opportunities and catching up in merely selective areas. The incident that the United States sanctioned on ZTE in April 2018 exposed shortcomings of China's semiconductor technologies and the urgency that China must take actions in the area.By studying the history of development of semiconductor industry in the twentieth-century world, China may find inspirations for its own problems.
