Abstract:The author found the use of the word Kexue several times in ancient Chinese books. This paper analysed these cases one by one and especially investigated the emergence of the word Kexue( Kagaku) in Japan, as well as its introduction to China from Japan. The author points out: the English word science has multiple implications, and it wasn’ t used as the reference of natural science until the 19th century; to a large extent, this fact is the reason why there were so many words which were used as the translation of the English word science in early times of China and Japan. The popularization of Kexue as science in China actually happened before large quantities of Chinese students in Japan came back to the country. After Kang Youwei and Wang Guowei, Du Yaquan, Cai Yuanpei, Zhong Guanguang, Yu Heqin and others who once studied Japanese used science early. Influenced by them, Yan Fu who had no knowledge of Japanese also used Kexue frequently. Finally, with the promotion of Liang Qichao, Ma Junwu, Lu Xun and other students who studied in Japan, Kexue soon replaced Gezhi, and had some positive impact on the rise of The New Culture Movement and scientism.
