Abstract:The annual CASS International Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean was held on February 27, 2008.In his written speech, Cheng Siwei, then Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, said that China can draw some valuable lessons and experiences from the Latin American reforms.He expressed satisfaction with the recent development of the bilateral relations between China and Latin America. In order to further promote this relationship, he said, both sides should encourage more exchanges and mutual understanding in all areas.Li Shenming,Vice President of CASS, remarked that, in recent years, Latin America has realized rapid economic growth, political stability and relatively stable social development.It is likely that in the near future the region could be the most promising area in the world, he predicted.Li Jinzhang,Vice Minister of the Foreign Ministry, said that Latin America has been thinking about its future development path so as to adapt to the changed domestic and international environment.He is optimistic about the development prospects of the region as well as its rising role on the world stage, and believed that this will benefit the bilateral relations between China and Latin America.Chen Fengxiang,Vice Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, said that economic, political and cultural diversities in Latin America have created a space for further development of the relations between China and Latin America, as both sides can learn from each other. In order to promote the bilateral relations, both sides need to strengthen mutual understanding and widen areas of cooperation.He hoped that academic research on Latin America should be further promoted in China so as to gain a better understanding of the region.Ambassadors from Cuba, Jamaica and Suriname also spoke at the conference. All of them predicted that Sino-Latin American relations will move forward more steadily in the future as this relationship is a win-win benefit for both sides.
