Abstract:Urbanization is a process of rural population gradually becoming urban citizens. This urban-citizenization process will result in a fundamental change in rural people's socio-economic life, living environments, social norm, views, lifestyles, behaviors, and psychological and physical health outcomes. How to ensure a smooth transit without undermining their health outcomes is critical to implementation and realization of"New Urbanization Programs". By using five waves of data (2002,2005,2008/2009,2011/2012,and 2014) from the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey with 27,906 adults aged 65 and older in mainland China,we aim to investigate whether there is an association between urban-citizenization and health among older adults. The results showed that compared to those not-yet-urban-citizenized rural older adults, the urban-citizenized older adults had a lower odds of,cognitive impairment and lower risk of morality, whereas they had a higher odds of disabilities. Further analyses revealed that the institutional barriers of the urban-rural-divide in the China's social security system was a key factor for such a health disparity. How to ensure health and quality of life of urban-citizenized population and the integration of the urban and rural social security system is crucial to a smooth transition and rural development in China.
