Out of Place:Migrant Workers' Willingness and Choice to Convert to Urban Hukou in the Context of the New Urbanization

Abstract:Against the backdrop of Chinese urbanization being in a phase of rapid development and promoting household registration reform as its most important starting point,study on mi-grant workers' willingness and choice to convert to urban hukou has become an important focus of the social policy academic community accordingly.Based on the survey data of the China La-bor－force Dynamics Survey(CLDS)released by Sun Yat－sen University in 2014,this article used the Heckman selection model to analyze whether migrant workers are willing to convert to urban hukou and the specific choice of their home city.According to the results of quantitative analysis,we found that the income(including the total income of the individual and the income of the hometown's land dividend yield),the perception of subjective injustice had a significant impact on the migrant workers' willingness to move into the city; and the age,occupation type and mastering of local dialect would affect their choice of specific home cities.This article ar-gued that the willingness and choice to convert to urban hukou was not based on a simple ra-tional choice,in which social psychological and cultural factors were intertwined.However,the exploration of the specific mechanism of these factors would become another hot issue in the fu-ture study.
