Abstract:The issue of whether rural migrants are able to settle down in cities plays a significant role in the new‐type urbanization in China .Using the 2013 National Population Dynamic Monitoring Survey Data ,this paper examines the rural migrants’ intention to settle down in cities through both institutional and non‐institutional fac‐tors .It is found that w hether participating in social security system and w hether having school‐aged children re‐spectively affect rural migrants’ intention to settle down in cities ,which suggests the importance of the institution‐al factors .From the perspective of social capital ,traditional ascribed social networks ,such as kinship ,deal nothing with their intention to settle down in cities ,whereas achieved social networks ,which are embedded in modern soci‐eties ,such as friend network ,organization network ,and colleague network ,are significantly positive with rural migrants’ intention to settle down in cities .
