Abstract:In the context of emerging engineering education, the construction first-class undergraduate courses should be learner-centred. As learning digital circuits and their electronic design automation (EDA), undergraduate students can easily find some open courses or teaching videos ahead, so that in a formal course it might be possible that some students neglect systematic study with their one-sided assumption that they had learned, while others who start from scratch might feel teaching is too fast or too deep. As course designers, we conduct to understand their learning situation, attach importance to face-to-face questioning and discussing, and provide demonstrations, exercises, virtual simulations, and portable experiments. While applying some methods as in online and offline blended teaching for students who had already more or less learned, we drive beginners quickly get progressed, and totally design a digital circuit EDA course with the principle of Understanding by Design (UbD). This paper explains our methodologies in the reform of digital circuit EDA teaching under the condition of fully considering students’ learning situations, and provides examples of how to guide students with different levels in knowledge acquisition to study and practice through hierarchical experimental design, and how to make the content of our course experiments progressive and consistent before and after.
