Status of health literacy among urban primary school teachers in 6 provinces in China

Abstract:Objective Understand the present situation of health literacy among primary school teachers in the city and analyze influencing factors.Methods With combining way of multistage sampling,stratified sampling,PPS sampling, we take formal teaching faculty and administrative personnel as the object of the investigation.All the teachers were from Bei-jing,Jiangsu, Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, and Guangxi. Results The total objects was 2995.Among them,458 (15.29%)males and 2537 (84.71%)females.The average age were (37.20 ±8.05).The overall level of health litera-cy among primary school teachers in six provinces was 58.00%.The literacy of basic knowledge and ideas,health living style and behavior,basic health skill was respectively 77.03%,44.94%,57.30%.The literacy of scientific health per-spectives was 74.96%,infectious disease prevention and control was 39.10%,chronic diseases prevention and control was 45.84%,safety and first aid was 89.82%,primary medical care was 45.61% and health information was 70.65%.Female primary school teachers had higher literacy level (OR =1.232,95%CI:1.001 -1.517).Compared with the teachers o-ver 45 years old,the health literacy level was the highest if the teacher was 20 -30 years (OR =1.438,95%CI:1.148 -1.800).Teachers who worked in the health promotion school had higher literacy level (OR =1.877,95%CI:1.596 -2.208).If the teacher was in charge of a class,he or she owned higher health literacy (OR =1.236,95%CI:1.063 -1.436).Conclusion Health literacy level among primary school teachers in the city was high.Gender,age,whether the teacher worked in health promotion school and teacher in charge of a class or not were the influencing factors of the health lit-eracy among primary school teachers in the city.
