Abstract:The daily life narration is distinctive in Shanghai modern literature history, and the distinctiveness has lost after the People's Republic of China was founded and Shanghai was reformed as the center of bourgeois thought. The daily life in literature in Shanghai has returned and developed, demonstrating an active desire for survival since the middle of eighties. The daily life is colorful in form in the nineties. This paper describes the development of daily life narration in Shanghai in the contemporary literature, uncloaking the soul transmutation inside it.

Abstract:The emergence,construction and growth of the new pattern in the modern metropolitan culture of Shanghai are directly and closely related to its special early experience and deep cultural structure which has taken shape on the basis of integration of various factors of the city.Large cities in Jiangnan(regions south of the Yangtze River) such as Hangzhou and Suzhou,each of which boasts a long history of more than 2000 years,have formed their unique urban cultural traditions mainly through their own creativeness and innovation.In comparison,Shanghai has made up for its cultural deficiencies and disadvantages mainly by learning from and modeling itself upon others,as well as by conducting cultural exchanges with others.The Western pragmatism,the northern practical rationality and the Jiangnan poetic culture in the midst of their mutual opposition and mutual integration have provided a deep structure which has facilitated immense development spanning historical stages for the duplication,production and transmission of the modern metropolitan culture of Shanghai.

Abstract:China has long and rich traditions of life writing that run from its earliest historical records to the contemporary blogosphere. Biography was, for centuries, a central strand in historical writing, and this official, public life narration co-existed with ‘social’ biographies, necrologies, hagiographies, diaries, poetry, letters, essays and other genres that contained a wealth of reflection on character, experience, identity and the life course. These were preserved in personal collections, exchanged to cement friendships and social alliances, published to promote or challenge hegemonic values, or to enhance individual or communal reputations. China scholars have drawn on this work to supplement or interrogate the orthodox historical record and have mined life narrative for insights into shifting representations of ideas or practices, into generic conventions, and into changing modes of s elf-re presentation and identity formation.1

Abstract:Modernization is a process of the redistribution and strategic adjustment of global resources.As far as Shanghai is concerned,after it obtains the minimum qualification and identity for urban competition,it opens for itself a channel to modern international resources dominated by Western civilization.Shanghai is able to become China' s contemporary metropolis that possesses the highest level of internationalization and urbanization,just because,in its every critical moment of development,it can absorb the philosophy,wisdom and spirit of the time,which is essential for China and the world.In every important phase,it is directly related to different forms of axial intelligence.Shanghai' s cultural center,which is established from its beginning to 1930s,is a cultural pattern of being most worthy of attention and study for further understanding how China' s civilization is melted into a new axial age of globalization.In the confliction between the East and West,the ancient and modern,Shanghai completes successfully a new spiritual awakening and creates a unique culture form,thus,in the modern abyss full of blood and fire,life and death,exploring a way of life and acting as a pioneer for China' s being admitted into the world' s civilization system of new axial age.And Shanghai,in the new axial age,opens directly the modern lifestyle and aesthetic taste.Shanghai' s cultural spirit and life style,in the aspect of promoting the transformation of China' s traditional values,daily lifestyle and aesthetic taste,can not be compared by any other regional culture in modern China.

Abstract:The spiritual ecological study of the 20th century Chinese Literature belongs to the category of the spiritual history research. In terms of metaphor, phthisis, insaneness and impotence respectively typify the diseases of the spiritual ecology in the 20th century. Through the study of these typical diseases, we can reveal some features of the spiritual ecology in the past century. The large number of realistic descriptions of phthisis in the literary works endows the disease with a profound social-cultural connotation, reflecting the spiritual status of suppression, darkness and coldness of the first half of the 20th century. Insaneness is the spiritual aberrance. In Chinese Literature of the 20th century, it can be divided into two types: the insaneness named by the society and feign madness named by the patients themselves. Insaneness as a kind of spiritual aberrance reveals the inhuman nature of the Chinese feudal culture in first half of the 20th century and the tragic situation of the Chinese enlightenment in the 20th century. Sex and politics form a converse relation in the 20th century Chinese literature. The appearance of a large number of characters in the autarchy culture in the latter half of the 20th century has formed the political utopia metaphor of the particular historical context. The three diseases, Phthisis, insaneness and impotence, reveal a kind of historical truth of Chinese intellectuals' spiritual ecology in the 20th century.

Abstract:The novel The New Story of the Stone (新石头记, Xinshitouji [1908] 2016), by Wu Jianren, is one of the most representative Chinese utopian works of the late Qing dynasty, or the early 20th-century. The novel is evenly divided into two parts. The first 20 chapters probe into the political and social conditions of late Qing China through the depictions of the protagonist’s travels to cities such as Shanghai, Wuhan and Beijing where the relations with the West had been established. The last 20 chapters, which are antithetical to the first part, depict a utopia – the Civilized World. There is a twisted mirror-image relationship between Shanghai and the Civilized World. The Civilized World alludes to civilized Shanghai with advanced hospitals, factories, museums, schools for women, trading markets and so on. Based on the image of Shanghai, the highly westernized and modernized Chinese metropolis, the author works out this “genuine civilized country” in the hope of competing with the “false civilized Western country”. Therefore, by making the geographic location of “the Civilized World” both fictional and real, the author finds his way to imagining a unique Chinese utopia which might surpass the Western civilization in the late Qing China.

However, in Shanghai where the economy is developing very fast, the relationship between the dialect and standard Chinese in the field of literature seems returned to the original state at the beginning of modern Chinese literature. With the development of contemporary and modern Chinese literature as a context and Shanghai writers as an example, this paper will analyze the great influence of standard Chinese and dialects on contemporary and modern Chinese literature, the different manifestation between Northern and Southern areas, and the complicated reasons of this phenomenon.

Abstract:During the Republic of China,great changes have taken place in Jiangnan cities and towns,including the modernization of industry in the city,the Westernization of lifestyle,the civilization of views and values,etc.For those cities and towns,they presented a complete picture of modernity in the respect of material culture and daily life.Shanghai,particularly,had been the center of the city agglomeration in Jiangnan delta,for its rapid development of the space and the standard of life,which not only shifted the former route of the development of the agglomeration oriented by Suzhou and Hangzhou,but further expanded the gap between cities in Jiangnan as well.So the development of Hangzhou and Suzhou both lagged behind Shanghai.Furthermore,Suzhou less developed than Hangzhou.More and more market towns,as developing and finalizing during the Republic of China,were less obvious in development trend of specialization,but more in homogenization,that is,they were transformed to comprehensive centers of economy,commodities,culture,leisure and transportation in the gradual process of administrativization.Amidst the process of construction,leisure industry had been a major orientation of development in those regions with rich historical and cultural resources.Different terms used by people then to express recreational tourism,such as"the regular travel","the group travel","excursion"and"sightseeing"could be seen in the newspaper all the time,which was able to reflect the veer of service function and people's needs.The bad health habits in cities and towns,however,were difficult to be changed quickly in the process of modernization.Such unhygienic custom,regarded as"normal state"or"normal practice",would influence the judgments of Chinese and foreign people towards the lifestyle in Jiangnan delta.

Abstract:Plenty of profound discussions have been conducted of the positive and negative effects which the leased territory in Shanghai in late Qing Dynasty exerted on Chinese politics, economy, and culture, but explorations of its influence on stories and novels from the angle of literature cannot be said to be plentiful and profound enough. Shanghai was the center of the flourishing success of stories and novels in late Qing Dynasty mainly because there existed the leased territory. The prosperous economy, the special political environment, and the relatively free cultural market in the leased territory provided fiction with a strong material basis for their development and a desirable human environment for their circulation; meanwhile, the rapid circulation of modern newspapers and magazines supplied new media for them. As a result, periodicals which published fiction sprang up one after another; literature and art magazines and newspapers carried stories and novels in large numbers; publishing houses, book agencies and bookstores printed and distributed quite many stories and novels, hence the rare prosperity of the art of fiction in the leased territory in Shanghai. The rapid development of stories and novels carried in newspapers and magazines facilitated and promoted the transformation of ancient fiction in modern times.

Abstract:By means of a comprehensive analysis of descriptions of urban life in the multi-volume novel, %Morning of Shanghai%, written by Zhou Erfu, this paper shows how the revolutionary ideology exerted a tremendous influence upon urban life and remolded it to a great extent at that time. Based on such an argument, It traces to the source of this ideology, namely, constructive rationalism. And, the exposition on the sense of liberation of the working class in terms of Bakhtin's theory of carnival is also included.

Abstract:Modern Chinese literature is most open in the history of Chinese literature, with various Western literary currents and cultural trends flooding into China. As the most important and popular genre in Chinese literature, modern Chinese novel has been developing under the Western influence, and it has played a vital role in flourishing modern Chinese literature and enlightening modern Chinese intellectuals and the broad reading public. To the author, toward the end of the nineteenth century, Chinese literature was almost “marginalized”. In order to resume its lost grandeur it moved from periphery to centre by identifying itself with Western cultural modernity or modern Western literature. To realize this grand and ambitious aim, translating novel became an important task. In dealing with the Western influence, the author also reperiodizes twentieth-century Chinese literature: modern literature started with the May 4th Movement in 1919 and ended in 1976; since 1976, Chinese literature has been in the contemporary era, which is characterized by more postmodern than modern. In this global context, Chinese fiction writing has become part of world literature and been developing in a pluralistic direction.

Abstract:Owing to Japanese invasion, China's territory had, from 1937 till 1945, been divided into three parts: the Japanese- invaded area , the Kuomintang - controlled area and the revolutionary base area. Such a division had exerted a tremendous impact on culture and literature. Under close scrutiny, it can be discerned that literary schools and constituents of writer community in each of three areas were fairly complicated and there had been a process of migration, transfer, breaking - up and reshuffle over those years. The literary arenas in Qiongqing, Yanan and Kunming, reflective of different cultural backgrounds and features, exhibited diversified developmental trends of literature in 1940s. Though affected by war to some degree, activities and publications of literary associations were rather active in 1940s. An article published in Dagong Paper one day after May 4th Literature and Art Festival in 1940s showed much concern for status quo and development prospect of literature and art, which mirrored common blankness of many Chinese people in late 1940s.
