On the Directional Verbs in Mandarin Chinese

Abstract:The term “directional verb” has been used for ages. It seems to be accepted by the researchers. However, the present author thinks that the term is inaccurate. This paper gives an exploration of some of the directional verbs, such as “qilai”(起来),“xiaqu”(下去),“xialai”(下来), from the syntactic and semantic perspectives. The result shows that their functions have synchronically diverged. Therefore, it is inappropriate to call them directional verbs generally. They should be put into the sorts of verb and particle respectively, based on their functions.
