Abstract:This essay reviews Zhang Longxi’s A History of Chinese Literature. The book covers Chinese literature from its very beginning to modern times. It emphasizes texts’ literary and aesthetic qualities when evaluating and historicizing literature. The book demonstrates the importance of canons in literary history, using Chinese tradition as an example. Therefore, it also brings the Chinese tradition into the broader framework of world literature. Reading Zhang’s concise historical overview of Chinese literature, we can better understand the interplay between literary tradition and the individual talent. Zhang Longxi has skillfully combined the writing of a history of literature with literary criticism in this book. Zhang’s successful attempt informs literary scholars of possible paradigms of compiling literary history in a post-cultural-studies theoretical context.

Abstract:Culture from the Qing Dynasty has occupied an extremely important position in the history of ancient Chinese culture,assimilation of the Han nationality and the adaptation to the Han culture,support for literature and ban on literature,Han studies and studies of Song Dynasty,integration and reflection,these are the four basic dimensions for understanding the Qing culture. The basic structure of the Qing culture was the coexistence of Manchurian culture and the Han culture,and the interaction between assimilation of and adaptation to the Han culture,yet the latter was the main trend,overshadowing the latter,resulting in the subjection of Manchurian culture to the Han culture. The rulers of Qing Dynasty took"Resorting to Ancient Convention and Supporting Literature"as their basic policies,and these policies were unexceptionally paradoxes of promotion and prohibition,collection and confiscation,anthologizing and banning,construction and destruction. Amidst the Qing culture,Han studies and Song studies enjoyed prosperity,yet the two did not integrate into"Qing studies". Under the influence of both supporting and banning literature,the Qing Dynasty culture clearly demonstrates the characteristics of integration and conclusion,yet the change of regime between the Ming and Qing dynasties and the opening of border to western colonialism in late Qing Dynasty provided new intellectual sources and momentum so that the Qing culture contained reflective and critical features during its entire span.

Abstract:The strong interest in literature in Chinese academic tradition has sustained even a contemporary development of such studies as emendation of text,history of literature,history of book publishing,and history of book collecting.And yet,unfortunately,little attention has been directed to the cultural and social functions of literature at large.The overseas sinologists’works on Chinese social history of books prove to be weak due to their indiscriminate transplant of western ideas and methodology.Different from the western one,the critical issue concerning the social and cultural functions of books in China is absolutely no more than the relation of a long history of book publishing and collecting to its influence on the social development and cultural heritage in ancient China.Only with"literature in culture"in mind can we attain a more profound understanding of Chinese ancient literature.

Abstract:This study delves into the evolution of diplomatic ideas during the late Qing dynasty (1840-1914), offering a comprehensive review of existing literature on this transformative period. It critically examines the established timeline, justifying the selection of 1840 as the starting point and 1914 as the endpoint for this research. The review further investigates the changing landscape of ancient Chinese diplomatic concepts, tracing their evolution during the late Qing Dynasty and their interactions with the emerging notions of sovereignty and national consciousness within modern China. Additionally, it constructs a chronological narrative from the extensive body of Chinese studies on the metamorphosis of diplomatic ideas in modern Chinese history. This literature review concludes by identifying crucial research lacunae and formulating three pertinent research questions, paving the way for a more nuanced understanding of this significant historical transformation.

Abstract:In many periods of Chinese cultural history,there were debates on literature (wen) and essence (zhi),but these debates took on a greater significance as they were extended and refreshed during the late Ming and the early Qing dynasties.First of all, the Manchu conquerors,who had been despised as an"inferior race,"brought a new life style to the people of China proper, and they aroused a lot ideological and social changes.Intellectuals had to rethink the traditional problem of"literature and es- sence"to face this new era.The Han concept of civilized people and barbarians,which had been connected with the geograph- ical distinction between South and North,was seriously challenged and revised to fit the new rulers' concept of"great unity."In terms of life style,whether to live extravagantly or unostentatiously was increasingly a metaphor for the tactics of domination,not an individual decision.This article will reveal the process of how the emperor and the intellectuals comprehended and expressed their ideas of"literature and essence"and analyze their complicated relationship in the early Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:In the literary and artistic circles, views and schools were divided on the ＂seventeen-year literature and art＂ along with the end of the ＂Cultural Revolution＂ around 1979. On one hand, scholars of one school represented by Lin Mohan and Liu Baiyu were considered ＂conservatives＂ or ＂pro-leftists＂ because of their persistence in vindicating the legitimacy of literary and artistic movements and criticism implemented during the ＂seventeen years＂ ; on the other hand, scholars of another school commissared by Zhou Yang, Chen Huangmei, Feng Mu, etc. were regarded as ＂liberal-minded scholars＂ or ＂progressives＂ because of their view on the ＂seventeen-year literature and art＂ as well as their attempt to promote the ongoing ＂literature of the new period＂ beyond the dominant framework of the ＂seventeen-year literature and art＂. As is shown by this ramification, the contents and objectives in the writing of literary history are not matters of ＂objective reality＂, for the history of one section can be rather disparate due to different evaluation criteria and elaboration frameworks.

Abstract:Within the former Western framework of comparative literature theories, the justifiability of comparing literatures from different civilizations such as Eat and West was questioned. This was demonstrated overtly that there was no justifiability of comparing literatures of diverse civilizations in the former Western framework of theories. The proposal of the Variation Theory is a conceptual change in terms of the building of the discipline, which enables the study of Comparative Literature to transform from seeking homology to seeking heterogeneity. In other words, not only homology and affinity but also variation and heterogeneity should be the focus of the Variation Theory. Only when these aspects are organically combined together, will the discipline of Comparative Literature be satisfactorily built. The Variation Theory proposed by Chinese scholars is a great innovation and push to Chinese comparative theories and will exert great influence and value on the development of the world Comparative Literature.

Abstract:The chair's words The western learning into the east began in the late Ming dynasty and early Qing dy-nasty. The European missionaries brought many western things and meanwhile some knowledge such as astronomy, calendar, mathematics and others that influenced Chinese community of knowledge. In the late Qing dynasty political awareness, philosophical thoughts, cultural ideas and others besides advanced technology were introduced into China. New kind of education and translated works influenced Chinese way of living and thinking that led to asking for novelty and changes, which changed the mode of rigid and exclusive thinking and recognition. Today studies on this history should focus on its realistic mean-ing, that's to say, howto viewthe traditional Chinese culture and recent western culture and the relation-ship of Chinese and western cultures in the rising heat of“ancient Chinese knowledge”. Only in this way can we put history as a mirror and push ahead China's reform and opening up to the outside world as well as modernization.

Abstract:The communication between Wang Tao(1828-1897) and protestant missionaries in the Late Qing Dynasty focused on the Western religion and learning.When discussing Western learning,Wang Tao also used the term "literature," a term that would have great influence on the developmental history of pre-modern Chinese literary thoughts.While he had a systematic exploration into the development of Western learning and the Jesuits’ works in the Late Ming,Wang Tao didn’t elaborate on the concept of the term "wenxue(literature)," although he had mentioned Western poetry and other genres as well as some important Greek,Roman and British poets.Wang Tao’s experience and his understanding of Western literature were developed after the protestant missionaries introduced the Western concept of literature into China and recognized the term "wenxue" as the equivalent to "literature." The historical significance of the term still holds value to contemporary academic explorations into literary and intellectual history.

Abstract:Abstract: In "On Variations of Classical Chinese Literary Theory for a Framework of Global Literary History" Peina Zhuang discusses texts of classical Chinese literary theory as a reservoir for philosophical reflections on literary art. The aesthetics of Chinese literature originate in Confucianism and Taoism and hence represent an important background for any discussion of ancient, modern, or contemporary Chinese literature and literary history. Zhuang analyzes texts of classical Chinese literary theory within such a framework of a literary history and aims at furthering Chinese literature to become an integral part of world literatures. Further, Zhuang argues that "history" and "literary history" present a different picture of works on classical Chinese literary theory owing to the variation caused in representing their literary and aesthetic features. Zhuang also posits that the translation of Chinese literary texts to Western languages, while relevant and important, is not enough to advance Chinese literature from a peripheral status to a status of recognition hence the importance of scholarship with regard to literary history specifically.

Abstract:Macroscopically,the contemporary Chinese literary system is a cultural one dominated by Chinese political system.Since 1949 up to the present,the vicissitudes of contemporary literature over the past 60 years has given rise to a clear-cut demarcation of different literary systems with a ten-year period(1975-1984) as its watershed.With respect to the 100 years of new Chinese literature,the sixty years' literature of PRC also is an inseparable unity: regardless of the previous thirty years or the later,they all belong to the same literary system mode under the Chinese literature of PRC."Cultural Revolution" has played an important role in the formation of contemporary literature.Literary injuries done by the "Cultural Revolution" and their aesthetic restoration are the main events of the development of cotemporary literary trend.Through a readjustment of the foothold of history,aesthetics and humanity,contemporary Chinese literature has been integrated with literature of Taiwanese,of Hongkong,and of Macao,and overseas Chinese literature once more.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to comparatively study the differences and commonalities between Chinese literature and Western literature. First of all, the characteristics of the two are compared from three aspects, namely, presentation methods, thematic contents and literary forms. Chinese literature focuses on mood, ambiguity, and emphasizes the natural flow of emotions; while Western literature attaches importance to structure, logic, and pursues innovation in form. In terms of thematic content, Chinese literature tends to express personal emotions and expresses the harmony between human beings and nature and society; while Western literature focuses on the conflict between individuals and society and emphasizes freedom, equality and human rights. In terms of literary forms, Chinese literature coexists in various forms such as poetry, prose and novels, while Western literature takes novels, dramas and poems as its main forms. Secondly, this study explores the reasons for the differences between the two in terms of cultural background, writers' creative concepts and readers' acceptance. Chinese literature is deeply influenced by traditional cultural ideas such as Confucianism and Taoism, emphasizing moral education and philosophy of life; while Western literature is influenced by ancient Greek and Roman myths as well as religious beliefs such as Christianity, focusing on the inner world of man and exploring human nature. In terms of writers' creative concepts, Chinese writers tend to focus on social harmony from the perspective of traditional morality and ethics, while Western writers advocate the liberation of individuality and the pursuit of the realization of personal values. In terms of readers' acceptance, Chinese literature focuses on aesthetic experience and emotional resonance, while Western literature pays more attention to logical reasoning and thinking. The comparative study of Chinese literature and Western literature can help us better understand the diversity of world literature and enrich our concepts of literary aesthetics and creation. At the same time, by learning from the excellent achievements of Western literature, we can promote the innovation and development of Chinese literature.

Abstract:Disputes concerning the value of contemporary Chinese literature have been the hot spot among academic circles recently.One party believes that such type of assessment should be based on current Chinese experiences and a position of a local cultural value should be established.The other party maintains that a universal standard on literature should be adopted to reveal some drawbacks and deficiencies in contemporary literary writings. In fact,the so-called universal standard of literature was closely related to the notion of world literature dating from the early 19th century.An analysis of Goethe's discussion on world literature can reveal its highly Euro-centered proposition,which cannot afford a comprehensive explanation for Chinese literature.As for Chinese scholars,they should pay attention to both universal standard and local experiences,accumulating local experiences gradually.And furthermore,they would participate in broadening the original notion of world literature and gain more power of discourse,which enables them to revise and amend the current rules and models.

Abstract:In the age of globalization, intellectuals, writers, critics and literary and cultural studies scholars cannot but take pains to conceive or picture the future orientation of elite literature since elite literature is being challenged by popular literature and culture, and literary studies by Cultural Studies. The present essay tries to describe a new orientation of Chinese literature studies, or more specifically, to observe modern Chinese literature in a broad context of world literature and reach a rewriting of contemporary Chinese literary culture from an international and comparative point of view. In reperiodizing modern Chinese literature, the author points out that in the global age, the new framework of world culture in the twenty-first century is characterized by different cultures coming to dialogue and merging to some degree rather than ‘cultural conflict’. With this broad background, twentieth century Chinese literature should be re-examined from an international and comparative perspective. The paper also points out that rewriting literary history must be associated with issues of canon formation and reformation, that is, to offer new interpretations from theoretical perspectives of canonical literary works. The author discusses several considerations involved in canon selection: reception and market success, recognition of critical circles, and inclusion in university curriculum.
