On the Characteristics of English Teaching in Missionary School of the Modern Times and Its Enlightenment to English Teaching of Vocational Schools of Contemporary Times

Abstract:During the nearly 100 years from the middle of 19th century to the founding of new China,lots of western missionaries entered China and built lots of missionary schools.The missionary schools set up the English curses univer sally,paid attention to implement the individualized quality education,strengthened the combination of the English learn ing and the English listening and speaking training anytime and anywhere,emphasized the creation of comprehensive eng lish environment and atmosphere and closely connected English learning with students' social practice activities,and had achieved the remarkable teaching results.Higher vocational schools in China should,in process of English teaching,draw lessons from the modern missionary schools,adopt pure English textbooks and pure foreign teachers,create pure English atmosphere and cultivate students' English-applied abilities by strengthening interpretation and translation.
