Abstract:This paper studies the effect of commercial insurance on the household human capital investment from both theory and empirical studies. The results show that there is a U-shaped relationship between commercial insurance and the investments of human capital from the family. It shows that both commercial insurance and human capital investment are consumption and there is a crowding out effect on household human capital investment in the current period. But commercial insurance has a good protective effect on the families in the long run. More importantly, empirical results show that income is relatively unremarkable for household human capital investment. We find that social security systems such as commercial insurance and social insurance has a greater effect on the household human capital investment than income. In addition, the robustness test shows that insurance could increase the investment of innovative human capital such as art education and so on. Therefore, the development of commercial insurance could not only protect family from risks, but also have a great significance to the change of the structure of the labor force and structural transformation of the economy.
