Abstract:Cultural exchanges and cooperation is the key of construction of promoting "Belt and Road Initiative" initiative. From the perspective of transaction cost, we calculate transnational cultural distance between transnational countries with method of Kogut &Singh, and combine the bilateral trade data between China and countries along the Belt and Road Initiative to explore the effect of cultural distance on the bilateral trade relations during 1993-2015.The results show that the cultural distance along the countries has a long-term negative impact on bilateral trade flows, which means that the smaller cultural distance is, the more bilateral trade flow is.The empirical results of the sub dimensions of cultural distance further prove the robustness of the conclusions.Furthermore, the effects of various cultural distances on bilateral trade flows are heterogeneous. In addition, according to the estimated results of segmented regions and income groups, the negative effect of cultural distance on bilateral trade flows is more obvious in the samples of Europe and lower income countries, which shows that promoting cultural exchange and cultural integration between China and European countries still need to be improved. We should push forward to the goal of construction of "soft environment", expanding and deepening cultural interaction and economic policy, narrowing cultural distances, and getting rid of the cultural obstacles that restricting the development of trade liberalization to promote bilateral trade scale and trade structure optimization.
