Political Participations of Urban Residents in China:An Empirical Analysis

Abstract:Based on a national-wide data set with 6259 observations, we analyze how socioeconomic factors and social capital affect citizens' political participation in China as well as its mechanism. We focus on four types of participation:election participation, policy participation, community participation and protest participation.On average, the participation rate is relatively low.Citizens prefer policy participation and community participation.Income positively correlates with attention to politics and living conditions.Thus, as income increases, citizens tend to have more policy participation and less protests.With relatives working in the government, citizens pay more attention to politics, thus have more participation.Furthermore, encouraging more social organizations could also promote citizens' political participation.
