Abstract:The gradually accelerated process of Chinese economic reform unleashes the emerging power of entrepreneur-ship to the growth of the Chinese economy. The regional differences in entrepreneurship, however, have been driving the increasing economic disparities among urban areas. The paper attempts to uncover the underlying factors that affect entre-preneurship. Using the city-level panel data from 2001 to 2007, we estimates the zero-inflated negative binomial regres-sion model to explore the impact of the city’s organizational environment-including the spatial agglomeration and market structure-on urban entrepreneurship, controlling labor costs, market potential, industrial loans, human capital, geo-graphical location, city dummy variable, region dummy variable and time fixed effects. Main conclusions are as follows:Localization economies, urbanization economies and the proportion of small enterprises are conducive to urban entrepre-neurship;but poorer economic environment stemming from higher proportion of state-owned entrepreneurship undermines the realization of entrepreneurship. The effects of spatial agglomeration and market structure on urban entrepreneurship are different across sectors and across enterprise sizes.
