Abstract:In order to gain economic benefits, media fiequently make lots of unconfirmed negative news regarding the rumors about firms and consequently induce media bias through spreading rumors. However, previous scholars conduct dramatic researches about the positive role of media in corporate governance, but ignore the study on how to restrict media bias. Therefore,in regard to the media bias subsequently following the exposure of negative rumors about a Chinese listed firm,we consider whether corporate clarification announcements can restrict media bias.Based on the prior research,we explore the impact of corporate clarification announcements on media bias from the risk-aversion perspective of journalists, and the profit-driven perspective of news agencies. From the risk-aversion perspective, prior research demonstrates that media bias may influence media reputation and their income,as well as cause unnecessary litigation risks.Consequently,we propose that corporate clarification announcements can restrict media bias.If the quality of clarification announcements is stronger, the magnitude of media bias will decrease more (Hypothesis la). Moreover, the Agenda Setting Theory proposes that media can influence how the large public thinks about the firms. From the perspective of news agencies' profit-driven motivation, the news agencies have the incentive to make more negative reports regarding the firm being targeted by rumors because negative news attract more public attention.Consequently,we hypothesize that corporate clarification announcements could not restrict media bias (Hypothesis Meanwhile, among state-owned finns, their clarification announcements indicate the attitude of the government toward the rumors. If media continue to report the focal firms negatively, they will risk their relationship with government.Consequently,we propose that if the administrative rank of listed companies is higher, their clarification announcements would more effectively restrict media bias (Hypothesis 2).We collect the samples of rumors at Chinese A-share listed companies from 2006 to 2012.The regression results support that corporate clarification announcements can restrict media bias (supporting Hypothesis la).The higher the administrative rank of listed companies, the better the restricting effectiveness is (supporting Hypothesis 2).Our research relaxes the assumption that media report is unbiased, and explores the influence of corporate reaction on media reports from the perspective of restricting media bias. The empirical results support that corporate clarification announcements would rectify media bias. The results would instruct the firms on how to effectively deal with media bias subsequently following rumors.
