Abstract:This paper studies Taobao village as industrial agglomeration formed in underdeveloped areas based on E-Commerce platform and factor endowments of peripheral area and constructs an economic model to depict the mechanism of formation and development of Taobao village using comparative static method: (1) E-Commerce platform asymmetrically changes transaction cost difference between urban central areas and rural peripheral areas,enlarging market demand for rural commodities and providing external driving force for the formation of Taobao village. (2) Labor factor mobile within peripheral area only and special economic factor constitute conducive factor endowments. (3) Marshall externalities expand the scale of Taobao village industrial agglomeration,but congestion effect and competition from other Taobao villages curb the scale of Taobao village industrial agglomeration. (4) E-Commerce platform's duality of both changing demand function and supply function is the key to the formation and development of Taobao village.
