Economic benefit analysis of stow net fishery in the coast of the Zhaitang Island, Qingdao

Abstract:The economic benefit of stow net fishery off the Zhaitang Island from April to October in 2014 was studied in this paper. The results showed that: (1) most of the catches belonged to species of low economic values, and there was significant difference among the prices of different species. (2) In April,Portunus trituberculatusand Octopus ocellatusare the main commercial species, which contributes the majority of the total economic benefit of stow net fishery. The economic value of other low value species, such asAmmodytes personatus andSyngnathus schlegeli, is less than the cost of landing. Therefore, larger mesh size should be applied to release this portion of the catches. (3) The economic benefit in October is negative because of the low quay price, although the catch per unit effort (CPUE) increased to 242.2% of that in April. The results provide a reference for the development of the selective fishing gear and for the decrease of stow fishing vessels.
