Effect of Contract on Contractor’s Cooperative Behavior in Construction Project:Trust as a Mediator

Abstract:To explain the remaining controversy in literatures associated with the effect of contract on cooperative behavior,a theory model which consists of control and coordination function of the contract as independent variables,the contractor’s in-role and extra-role cooperative behavior as independent variables and the contractor’s trust as the mediator variable,is established from the perspective of the employer in construction project. The results of empirical analysis with 340 validated questionnaires show that the contractor’s trust takes partial mediating effects between contract coordination dimension and contractor’s cooperative behavior. Furthermore we get some implications. First,the employer shall understand both control and coordination function of contract and value that contract coordination can cultivate and sustain the contractor’s trust. Second,as the contractor’s trust have a positive influence on the in-role and extra-role cooperative behavior of contractor,the employer shall attach great importance to the promotion of the contractor’s trust.
