Abstract:This paper introduces the principles of lean construction,and a new cost control management model is built based on lean thinking.From the perspective of traditional construction design,combined with actual cost data of one construction project,a mathematical model is built about construction project cost and waste indicators based on lean construction theory.The function relationship between each indicator and time is identified and analyzed.Finally,the engineering optimization method is used to perform sensitivity analysis of main indicators in the total cost objective function.The influence degree of main waste indicators on the total cost of the construction project is obtained.

Abstract:Given the current productive efficiency in China, the core of design method is to "basically maintain the original status of strata (surrounding rock)", so as to achieve the goal of "reasonably exerting the self-bearing capacity of strata (surrounding rock). In another word, the interaction between strata (surrounding rock) and supporting structure will help the system to achieve the "stable equilibrium and deformation compatibility control". The design theories and construction methods are in consistency in this concern. The underground engineering stable equilibrium theory not only provides the elaboration of mechanics theory but also requirements for construction methods. The theory describes the basic concept of underground structure design and construction, the suitability and consistency of different design theories and construction methods in a better way. In addition, it also emphasize the significance of underground structure design details and reasonable construction process, which reflects the concept of "simplifying complicated issues". In Timo Shenko mechanics theory, the complicated boundary condition mechanics issues are simplified before solved, in order to better understand the physical interpretation of engineering problems, and thus facilitate the underground engineering design and construction. Based on the underground engineering stable equilibrium theory, four construction techniques are provided and illustrated with cases in this chapter.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, discrete event simulation (DES) has been increasingly employed in lean construction research as a response to the requirement of evaluating the impact of the implementation of various lean initiatives.A systematic review of DES application in lean construction research is necessary to examine how DES has been implemented in lean research.This review was conducted by reviewing 49 DES papers published in peer-reviewed journals and IGLC conference between 1997 and 2018, which aims to identify the state of the art development in this specific research area and propose future research directions.The papers are analysed in terms of publications, DES techniques, value of DES, and topic coverage.13 types of DES techniques, 6 value of DES in lean construction research, and 8 research topics are identified and summarised.The findings of this study are expected to provide useful suggestions for the future research opportunities of DES in lean construction research.

Abstract:Aimed at maximizing project value while reducing waste and cost, the lean construction (LC) approach was formally and successfully introduced to the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry in 1993. Although LC has rapidly developed since that time, it was not applied to a Chinese construction project until 2005. However, due to insufficient knowledge and poor execution, this first attempt at lean construction in China was inadequate. The aim of this study was therefore to discover if the Chinese construction industry has since discovered how to use lean practices to maximize project value, shorten the project schedule, improve project quality, and reduce waste. This was achieved by conducting a case study of a LC project in Suzhou, China. The case study revealed that implementation of lean practices during the project, including Last Planner System (LPS), Kanban system, Just-In-Time (JIT), prefabrication, Internet of Things (IoT), quality and safety management, and continuous improvement, all contributed to the improvement of project performance. To supplement the case study and to provide insights on the differences between Chinese and international LC, interviews with project stakeholders and a questionnaire survey of global lean experts were conducted. Results indicated that interviewees and survey respondents both held the view that project waiting times and defects can be greatly reduced through the implementation of LC, and that improvement of construction workflow along with project productivity and quality were the two most valuable benefits of using lean practices; there was also a consensus that lack of trust and the abilities of stakeholders are the biggest challenges.

Abstract:As the construction industry has an important affection both on the social economy and on the global environment, the government is paying more and more attention to sustainable construction. This paper firstly compares the relations of sustainable building, green building and energy-saving building, and then analyzes the relationship between lean thinking and sustainable construction thinking, and finally puts forward a sustainable construction model based on the lean thinking. These proposed ideas will not only benefit the construction enterprise for making their construction schemes sustainable and more acceptable, and saving resources and cost of their projects during the construction, but also benefit the society and environment for reducing the adverse affections by saving the construction resources, cutting the construction cycle, and enhancing the building quality.

Abstract:With the continuous acceleration of world economic development and globalization, China, as the world's largest developing country, has also affected the construction industry's growth accordingly. The construction industry consumes huge resources, so how to improve the level of project management and better meet the needs of the market and customers is necessary. Lean construction is a new type of project management model that can well meet the project's goals. Although lean construction has many advantages, the full implementation of lean construction has certain problems due to various factors. This article mainly reviews the past research results, analyzes some obstacles encountered in lean construction's overall performance, and gives some reasonable suggestions. The aim is to enable lean construction to achieve better development in the industry.

Abstract:Lean thinking is an effective method to reduce or eliminate the waste in the life cycle of construction projects and improve the projects' productivity. It is more and more widely used in the construction industry. This paper takes lean construction as the theoretical basis. Management philosophy of lean construction was analyzed. The impact of workflow on construction projects efficiency, including workflow continuity and loss during the flow process, was elaborated. According to the characteristics of earthmoving activities, the earthmoving operations workflow model was proposed based on lean construction to specify dynamic changes of workflow and information flow in the construction process. The main influencing factors and constraint conditions for earthmoving operations were discussed. The proposed models can be used to adjust the construction process, maximize the resources allocation, and reduce the resource loss and waste in construction in order to improve the efficiency and productivity for construction projects.

Abstract:Firstly, this paper expounds the theory basis of lean construction—the theory of lean production. At the same time, it puts forward that creating continuous-flow in lean construction is necessary. Secondly, they are discussed about the definition of continuous-flow, the meaning of the use of continuous-flow in construction, and the value-added activity of value stream. Thirdly, it is confirmed that the creation of value stream team and task mensuration team is the preparation of creating continuous-flow. Lastly, two methods are used to analyze the realization and application of continuous-flow in construction industry of value stream mapping and line balancing.

Abstract:Prefabricated construction is typically conducted using a special construction method and is employed in various disciplines such as engineering, management, and technology. Currently, one of the emerging research directions involves a combination of prefabrication and lean principles. However, the systematic analyses outlined in the literature in this field is insufficient and lacks clarity on the mainstream research topics; thus, it is difficult to understand the current research progress and determine the various subject branches. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to review previous research on lean management and the practices adopted in prefabricated construction projects to systematically evaluate their impact on prefabricated construction improvement. To this end, a critical review and summary of the application of lean construction principles in prefabricated construction is conducted using a three-step approach that incorporates bibliometric search, scientometric analysis, and in-depth literature classification. Consequently, five different research dimensions are obtained: data-driven intelligent decision, construction sustainability, activity process optimization, lean construction adoption in prefabricated construction, and other prefabrication-related lean adoption strategies such as circular economy, flexible field factory, and on-site industrialization. The research methods, lean techniques and tools, and research limitations are then discussed and analyzed based on these topics. Because all relevant articles are reviewed, this study contributes to building the knowledge system for lean prefabricated construction (LPC). Furthermore, the current universal development status and periodic results in this field are also discussed in this study. Therefore, the findings can be used to establish new research directions based on future thematic trends in the LPC domain, inspire practitioners using LPC technological implementation paths, and foresee possible obstacles in the future.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide comprehensive analysis and understanding of lean construction (LC) and to help researchers to find new gaps and research opportunities and develop potential collaboration chances. Design/methodology/approach The bibliographic data were obtained in peer-reviewed journals. The science mapping analysis and social network analysis (SNA) were used to conduct the analysis and visualization. Science mapping was performed to identify the research topics, evolution and the relationships between these topics. Also, the most influential LC-related articles in each topic were identified based on the concept of H-classics. SNA was also used to explore the collaboration status of authors and to identify the core authors in the LC field. Findings The results showed that topics in the LC field are consistently and continuously changing, which also reveals the fact that the lean concept system has evolved over time to a certain extent. The topics that could form the knowledge base of the LC research field in the future are related to two thematic areas: supply chain management (SCM) and planning and scheduling. SCM focuses on developing a system where supplier and client work together in coordination to deliver materials, works, equipment and labor and other resources. Moreover, prefabrication is a new hot topic, while BIM is a well-developed and isolated topic in the last five years. This result indicates that more studies need to be conducted in the future, to promote the integration of BIM and lean practices in the construction phase, as well as to explore the value of BIM in the reduction or elimination of waste and lean project delivery. As for global collaborations, LC research has been widely pursued throughout the world. The USA and the UK play the most dominant role in the international collaboration network. Research limitations/implications - Since the analysis of data takes some time, the specific results of this paper are limited to articles published in peer-reviewed journals, which leads to a certain degree of research lag. Practical implications - This paper provides insights (such as major journals, institutions, key scholars, the evolution of topics, highly indexed articles and the new LC trends in the last five years) for researchers in the LC field. Originality/value This paper gives a general review of the above-mentioned literature, including the number of LC-related articles published in each year, as well as the major journals and main contributors to the field of LC.

Abstract:Lean manufacturing began as the Toyota Production System in the Japanese auto industry of the 1970s and 1980s. Its main goals were to eliminate waste, reduce the need for managing large inventories, and provide optimum quality at the least cost by making quality control decisions an immediate part of the manufacturing process. Lean manufacturing is a management philosophy derived mostly from the Toyota Production System (TPS) to address their specific needs in a restricted market in times of economic trouble. Lean manufacturing, lean enterprise, lean production, or often simply, "Lean," is a practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. Lean can be described at different levels of abstraction: it can be defined as a philosophy, as a set of principles and as bundles of practices. Lean as one of the popular concepts has been studied and practiced in many companies. It has been proven to be transferrable and applicable to a wide variety of industries and services. Abstract:In order to solve the problem of lack of appropriate tools in the lean construction of construction projects, a framework of digital lean construction is proposed as a whole, and its management platform is implemented for construction phase by integrating lean construction with digital technologies. The concept of digital lean construction is proposed, its management model is constructed and refined, and the corresponding management platform is implemented for the construction phase. The framework is verified by holding an expert workshop and applying the management platform to typical construction projects. The research contributes not only to the establishment of the theoretical foundation to upgrade lean construction, but also to accelerating the transition from lean construction to smart lean construction. Two directions of future research are expected, i.e., to enhance the integration of the lean tools and digital technologies and clarify the transition to smart lean construction. Due to the complexity of lean construction and the lack of tool support, its widespread application have not been found significantly up to now. The development of digital technologies provides a potential solution to address this issue. Based on the integration of lean construction and digital technologies, a framework that includes management models and a management platform for digital lean construction was established in this paper. Then, a management platform was developed and applied to verify the management framework. It facilitates not only the efficient collaboration of the participants, but also the easy application of lean principles in the projects. The framework is expected to enhance quality, reduce management costs, and improve management capabilities in the projects. It provides a theoretical foundation for lean management and digital transformation upgrades of enterprises to drive changes in construction industry production methods and the corresponding management practices, promoting the high-quality development of the construction industry.

Abstract:Sustainable construction (SC) has become a primary objective of the building and construction industry due to the growing demand for reduced environmental impacts and more efficient resource use. Simultaneously, lean construction (LC), which focuses on minimizing waste and maximizing productivity, offers an opportunity to achieve greater sustainability in the construction process. This study explores the integration of LC and SC through a systematic literature review, employing VOSviewer software for quantitative analysis alongside qualitative analysis in conjunction with a comprehensive literature review. The findings reveal substantial synergies between LC and SC, including cost savings, waste reduction, and enhanced safety. However, challenges such as cost conflicts, environmental trade-offs, and worker welfare concerns act as barriers to effective integration. To address these challenges, this study proposes leveraging dynamic capabilities (DCs)—such as change management, organizational learning, organizational flexibility, and continuous improvement and innovation—as strategies for the successful integration of LC and SC. These insights contribute to academic research and industry practice, providing a practical framework for integrating LC and SC to improve sustainability and efficiency in construction projects.

Abstract:The material cost takes up a greater proportion in the total cost of construction enterprise, through reducing the material cost to reduce the total cost of construction enterprise, and Lean Supply Management is one effective material management way. This paper firstly analyzed the disadvantage of traditional construction enterprise material management pattern, based on this foundation proposing material lean supply chain; secondly analyzed the foundation of material lean supply chain: construction enterprise information, construction processes reengineering based on lean construction and lean construction; thirdly analyzed the model and key factors of Lean Material Flow Management; finally, give some constructive advice to implement the material lean supply chain.

Abstract:Lean production is a scientific management method that has been proven in practice. By nature, lean production is a kind of philosophy, and spirit. The core of it includes waste elimination, continuous improvement, and the pursuit of excellence. Therefore, the range of the application of lean production should not just be limited to the manufacturing process, and it should extend to design process so as to eliminate waste from the source.
