Abstract:In this paper, methods and ways for regulation of lignin biosynthesis in forest trees were dealt with, and the catalytic mechanisms of major kinds of enzymes for biosynthesis and modification of monoligniols were discussed. It concluded that through chemical control, gene engineering, cell and tissue cultures the aim of manipulating lignin biosynthesis, and producing lignin - less or no lingin forest trees can be reached, thus a revolutionary changes for pulping and paper - making industry may be brought out, and a new and environment - kind prospect of pulping and paper-making industry may come soon in the future.

Abstract:Lignin with important biological functions is the second abundant natural product, its content is only less than cellulose in plant. But the lignin must be extracted from the cellulose fraction in making paper pulp process leading energy_requiring, cost_increasing and pollution. Also, the lignin has negative effect on the digestibility of silage grass. So it is of considerable interest to reduce the lignin content in resource plants. The paper reviews the progress of lignin biosynthesis and regulation. The feasibility of reducing the lignin content and altering its composition for improving paper pulp production and decreasing pollution are discussed.

Abstract:Lignin is a kind of important macromolecular organic material and only inferior to cellulose inside plant with important biology functions like sustaining, protecting, transporting and so on. The ability to synthesize lignin has been essential in the evolutionary adaptation of plants from an aquatic environment to land. Whereas the lignin has negative effect on utilizing the plant resource in some areas, such as resulting in severe environmental pollution in the paper making and reducing the digestibility of silage grass. Regulating of lignin content through gene engineering plays important roles in environment protection and economy. The progress of recent research on the lignin biosynthesis is introduced. The hot area of the new progress of regulation of lignin content was presented. Meanwhile, some problems needed to research are suggested and the possible developments from now on are forecasted.

Abstract:The utilization of biomass in the production of renewable bioenergy and biomaterials has been a popular topic since the past decades as they are rich in carbohydrates. Most biomasses, such as wood, monocotyledons, and agriculture residues, need to be pretreated before the conversion of carbohydrates in order to break down the recalcitrant cell wall structure and increase the fiber accessibility. To date, a variety of pretreatment methods have been developed that vary from physical to chemical and biological methods. Pretreatment processes affect the cell wall physical structure as well as the chemical structure of the cell wall constituents. Comparing to the studies of the cellulose and hemicelluloses structural changes during pretreatment, such studies on lignin are relatively limited. On the other hand, in order to utilize the part of lignin from biorefinery processes, the understanding of the lignin structural changes during the refining process becomes important. In this study, typical pretreatment methods such as hydrothermal pretreatment, alkaline pretreatment, biodegradation, and oxidative pretreatment are introduced and their corresponding impacts on the lignin structures are reviewed.

Abstract:Lignin is a complex phenolic polymer that is deposited in the secondary cell wall of all vascular plants. The evolution of lignin is considered to be a critical event during vascular plant development, because lignin provides mechanical strength, rigidity, and hydrophobicity to secondary cell walls to allow plants to grow tall and transport water and nutrients over a long distance. In recent years, great research efforts have been made to genetically alter lignin biosynthesis to improve biomass degradability for the production of second-generation biofuels. This global focus on lignin research has significantly advanced our understanding of the lignification process. Based on these advances, here I provide an overview of lignin composition, the biosynthesis pathway and its regulation.

Abstract:The research status of lignin model compounds synthesis was comprehensively summarized. Three main pathways of lignin monomer synthesis were introduced, including shikimic acid pathway, phenylpropane metabolizing pathway, and ester reduction pathway. The two theories of lignin monomer polymerization were sketched, i.e., the random polymerization theory(or free radical combinatorial coupling theory) which was widely accepted by academia and the controversial strict regulation polymerization theory. The research development of the chemical synthesis methods and mechanism of dimer,trimer and polymer from lignin model compounds bounded by β-O-4,α-O-4,5-5′, and β-5′ bonds was illustrated. Meanwhile, some problems and countermeasures during the lignin chemical synthesis process were pointed out and the development direction of lignin model compounds synthesis research was confirmed.

Abstract:Lignin is essential for plant growth, structural integrity, biotic/abiotic stress resistance, and water transport. Besides, lignin constitutes 10–30% of lignocellulosic biomass and is difficult to utilize for biofuel production. Over the past few decades, extensive research has uncovered numerous metabolic pathways and genes involved in lignin biosynthesis, several of which have been highlighted as the primary targets for genetic manipulation. However, direct manipulation of lignin biosynthesis is often associated with unexpected abnormalities in plant growth and development for unknown causes, thus limiting the usefulness of genetic engineering for biomass production and utilization. Recent advances in understanding the complex regulatory mechanisms of lignin biosynthesis have revealed new avenues for spatial and temporal modification of lignin in lignocellulosic plants that avoid growth abnormalities. This review explores recent work on utilizing specific transcriptional regulators to modify lignin biosynthesis at both tissue and cellular levels, focusing on using specific promoters paired with functional or regulatory genes to precisely control lignin synthesis and achieve biomass production with desired properties. Further advances in designing more appropriate promoters and other regulators will increase our capacity to modulate lignin content and structure in plants, thus setting the stage for high-value utilization of lignin in the future.

Abstract:Lignin is one of the main components of plant cell wall and it is a natural phenolic polymer with high molecular weight, complex composition and structure. Lignin biosynthesis extensively contributes to plant growth, tissue/organ development, lodging resistance and the responses to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present review, we systematically introduce the biosynthesis of lignin and its regulation by genetic modification and summarize the main biological functions of lignin in plants and their applications. We hope this review will give an in-depth understanding of the important roles of lignin biosynthesis in various plants' biological processes and provide a theoretical basis for the genetic improvement of lignin content and composition in energy plants and crops.

Abstract:As the most abundant natural renewable aromatic polymers, lignins can be used to produce biofuels and value-added chemicals. Lignins attract more and more attention in energy and chemical industrials, and have the potential to substitute petroleum as raw materials to some extent. To realize the application of lignins, the chemical composition and structural characteristics should be fully understood. However, the ubiquitous crosslinks among lignins, cellulose and hemicelluloses are complex, resulting in the incomplete separation of lignin from biomass. In addition, diverse sources and complex structures embarrass the development of investigation and application. With revealing the chemical compositions of lignins as the starting point, methodologies and technologies, such as pretreatment, separation, transformation and analysis, for the structural investigation of lignins are compared, and the up-to-date advances, including monolignols and linkages of lignins, biosynthetic processes, the reactions of model compounds and lignification theories are importantly reviewed. The applications of lignins and their derivatives in the fields of polymer blends, resins, carbon fiber, activated carbon and other chemicals along with related difficult problems are pointed out.

Abstract:Lignin, the second most abundant component in plants, is a class of complex aromatic polymer. Industrial lignin is a major byproduct of pulp and paper production and biorefineries, with more than 50 megatons generated annually. However, more than 98% of industrial lignin is either burned as fuel or discharged as wastewater, causing serious environmental pollution. From a sustainable feedstock perspective, finding additional high-volume and high-value applications for lignin is an extremely important and long-term pursued objective. Thus, lignin resources deserve to be further exploited as biorenewable raw materials for energy-saving and lowcarbon polymer production. Inspired by the natural three-dimensional structure, excellent ultraviolet-blocking and antioxidant properties of lignins, the authors have focused their research on lignin-based biorenewable resources. This review summarizes research achievements of the recent decade. Progress has been made in several aspects, such as nonionic and amphoteric lignin-based surfactants, lignin-based functional materials, lignin-based photoelectric materials, lignin-based resins and polymer composites, and catalytic depolymerization of lignin.

Abstract:Lignin consists of both aromatic and aliphatic portions containing many active functional groups, which suggests some ion exchange and adsorption properties. Technical lignin is mainly obtained as a byproduct from pulp and paper industry. By modification, lignin can be utilized to prepare lignin-based adsorbing materials with different functions. The adsorption property of lignin and the progress in the research on lignin-based adsorption material are reviewed in detail. In addition, the problems and difficulties involved are discussed, and some suggestions on the research of lignin-based adsorption material are presented.

Abstract:As the second most abundant renewable aromatic polymer , lignin can replace some phenol to produce lignin-phenol-formaldehyde adhesive . However , the application of lignin in energy and chemical industrials is highly restricted by its complicated structures and chemical composition .In addition , the diverse sources and inert characteristics are retarding the application of lignin .As a result, numerous lignins generated in pulping mills are inducing environmental problems every year in china .The structures and properties of lignin e .g.lignin sulfonate , kraft lignin were summarized . The application of lignin in phenol-formaldehyde adhesives were introduced as well .The methods used to modify lignin were reviewed , including phenolation , hydroxymethylation , demethylation , sulfonation , etc.It was the most important to elucidate the correlation between lignin structure and chemical modification as to improve the potential application of lignin in the adhesive industry .As a result , the successful usage of lignin had a positive impact in both environment and economy.
