Abstract:This paper uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the intellectual capital measurement to study the impact of intellectual capital on the performance of China's banking industry and propose changes to improve the efficiency of the banking industry. The conclusions are as follows: capital employed efficiency (CEE) and structural capital efficiency (SCE) have a negative correlation with the technical efficiency from CRS DEA (TE), while human capital efficiency (HCE) has a positive correlation with TE. But the correlations between capital employed efficiency (CEE) and TE, human capital efficiency (HCE) and TE are not statistically significant.

Abstract:The measurement of human capital is widely under attention. This paper demonstrates the rationality and feasibility of perpetual inventory method (PIM) in estimating human capital. According to the comparability between physical capital and human capital on theory, assumption and basis, the estimating techniques of human capital with PIM is discussed. Human capital depreciation is confirmed, and human investment price index is designed, and then the measuring system of human capital is put forward. Based above, the stock and inefficiency of human capital in China from 1995 to 2005 is also demonstrated in this paper.

Abstract:Based on the contrast between the accelerated pace of China's economic growth and the moderation of its demographic evolution, our topic is focused on the qualification of the population. A review of the literature on Chinese human capital is first proposed to highlight its progress as well as its limitations. It is then our own methodology for building two stocks of human capital that is presented. We detail the processes for determining stock depreciation rates; then the increases of the latter; and stock values for reference years. Our series of human capital stocks for China from 1949 to 2014 are finally delivered to readers.
Education, Human Capital And Regional Economic Differentials: An Empirical Test Using China'S Provincial Panel Data

Abstract:By applying the dynamic panel data method advocated by Arellano & Bond and the standard fixed effect method, this paper focuses on the effects of education on regional economic differentials in the standard growth regression framework. An interaction of population density and average schooling is employed to test the human capital externality hypothesis as proposed by Robert Lucas. We show that education does have a positive effect on the economic growth, and there exists some schooling externalities. Additionally, our growth regressions also show a strong conditional convergence in levels of per capita income across China's regions. The marginal return to education at steady state is about 22%. Several explanations of the results are then presented.

Abstract:From the perspective that the change in population age structure could affect human capital accumulation, this paper introduces a concept of “the potential growth speed in human capital stock” and discusses the future of China’s human capital growth from different aspects. This paper uses the perpetual inventory method and China’s sixth national population census data to predict the maximum potential space for China’s human capital stock growth in the future. Firstly, we use the average years of schooling of the working-age population as an index to measure the human capital stock. Though decomposing the differences in human capital stock, we introduce the concept of potential growth speed in human capital stock. Secondly, by decomposing accumulation rate of human capital stock in China, differences of human capital stock between China and South Korea, and differences of human capital stock between China and Japan, this paper finds that the age structure change will have a negative factor on China’s accumulation of human capital in the next 20 years. To conclude, China will probably accumulate human capital at a much faster rate until 2040, but the human capital growth potential is fully exploited on the condition of that.

Abstract:Human capital plays a very important role in the import related R&D spillovers.In foreign literature,methods employed in analyzing the role of human capital in R&D spillovers often involve the following ones.Analysis of interaction effects between human capital and technology import variables:it measures the size of foreign R&D spillovers by directly using technology import variables.Its results are ambiguous.Analysis of interaction effects between human capital and foreign R&D stock:it directly calculates the size of foreign R&D stock,Its results are ambiguous likewise.Estimating absorptive capability:it directly estimates the size of the absorptive capability to investigate the role of human capital.Its results indicate that raising the education level in developing countries is very conducive to improving their absorptive capability.Case study:it presents a case about the spread and spillover of computer technology across countries.One of the most robust findings of this method is that high levels of education attainment are important determinants of computer technology spillovers.Threshold regression:it analyzes the threshold effect of human capital on the import related R&D spillovers by applying a special endogenous nonlinear threshold regression model.Its findings suggest that human capital may function as a so-called threshold variable in the import related R&D spillovers.In order to spread existing literature,future research can start with such aspects as improving the measure of variables,paying attention to adverse effects that international technology spillovers exert on the human capital,modifying the technology by which the model is estimated,and so on.

Abstract:Social returns to human capital investment are always important issue to all politicians,strategist and economists.Owning to the characteristics of human capital,being short of useful statistic data,few empirical researches is done on this topic.This paper searches out new data to support empirical study,and estimates social returns to human capital in China and some of its provinces,the result reveals that social returns to human capital investment increased by only a small scale,the ratio of social returns to GDP declined sharply in the past15 years.

Abstract:Construction of physical capital stock data is a key element for estimating production functions, measuring total factor productivity growth, and for growth accounting. Existing literature, however, shows great variations in the estimates of China's national capital stocks because different methodologies and statistical sources were used. Systematic improvements and adjustments to China's GDP accounting practices have made it possible to produce a consistent and comparable series for provincial level capital stock using the perpetual inventory method (PIM). This article recommends a standardized procedure in constructing the level of capital stock for 30 Chinese provinces from 1952 to 2004. The merit of such statistical construction, although with some drawbacks, is that the series can be easily updated to more recent years using official statistics. Applying our capital stock data, we estimate total factor productivity growth and characterize the spatial pattern across provinces in post-reform China.

Abstract:China's economic development has advanced from a high-speed to a high-quality growth stage in recent years. The optimization and upgrading the economic structure require high-quality human capital to support an innovation-driven economy. In this paper, a general equilibrium model of human capital (Xiang and Yeaple, 2018) is applied to estimate the cognitive and non-cognitive productivities based on Chinese provincial-level macro-data and individual labor's micro-data from 2008 to 2017. The weighted power mean of cognitive and non-cognitive productivities helps calculate the provincial level human capital quality index (HCQI), which provides a realistic estimate of human capital quality. We find that the improvement of the HCQI leads to convergence in economic growth in China's provinces. HCQI can help explain the differences in economic growth levels in different regions of China. Our study provides a constructive step in understanding cognitive and non-cognitive abilities and HCQI in China, which could help guide education investment policy in China and its provinces.

Abstract:To the problem brought that human capital is measured only by the level of education during the study of human capital to northwest China,through the introduction of entrepreneurial human capital,this paper builds human capital structure model,substituting the human capital structure model to the human capital externality model,and analyzes the model,then making comparison with previous studies of human capital externality model.The results show after the introduction of entrepreneurial human capital,human capital's effect of northwest region on economic growth reduces,and in human capital structure,skillful human capital's effect on economic growth is far greater than entrepreneurial human capital's,and entrepreneurial human capital inhibits the effect of skillful human capital on economic growth.
The Empirical Analysis of the Non-equilibrium Allocation of Regional Human Capital in China

Abstract:In accordance with to economic growth empirical model of human capital externalities,the influence of regional human capital allocation on the economic growth in China has been paralised by using modern quantitative method during 1985-2009.The results show that the contribution rate on economic growth from the regional human capital allocation ranks as: East(30.8%),Northeast(26.9%),Central(25.4%) and West(21.9%);while the marginal rate of technical substitution from human capital instead of physical capital in the eastern,central,western and north-east are respectively 0.66,0.34,0.31 and 0.62 in 2009,which shows regional human capital allocation is non-equilibrium,according to the optimal allocation criteria of regional human capital allocation.On the whole,some strategies of the optimal allocation of China′s regional human capital are proposed to promote the regional coordinate rapid economic growth.

Abstract:There are to date no official Chinese statistics relating to capital stocks. This lacking data hinders econometric studies of growth in this country. Series of such stocks are proposed in the literature, but most available empirical work on this topic suffers multiple deficiencies. The purpose of this article is to build the most reliable and longest possible statistical series of capital stocks for China. Our initial capital stocks are calculated on the basis of an output-capital ratio which is less approximate (and lower) than those generally provided. Our investment flows are consistent with the perimeters of the initial stocks. Our investment price indices are strictly tailored to the content of these stocks, and the unit root tests show that all the indices are non-stationary and cointegrated to the order of 2. This means they cannot be substitutes, as supposed in many other studies. Our depreciation rates are estimated by type of capital, under assumptions consistent with age-efficiency and retirement. Investment shares are used to approximate an overall capital structure and to calculate a total depreciation rate. Built from 1952 to 2014, our original series are available to econometricians seeking to conduct new empirical studies on China, over the long run.

Abstract:We carefully utilize empirical methods and measurement, and find that the effect of human capital on China's economic growth may be indirect through physical capital investment. This result is different than that found for OECD countries and has not been suggested by previous studies. In addition, in determining physical capital investment, workers with college education play a more significant role than those with primary and secondary education, suggesting the possibility of capital-skill complementarity. This finding has implications for China's future regional growth inequality: the inequality may increase rather than decrease, because physical capital investment continues to accumulate faster in the eastern area where the human capital stock is larger and thus leads to greater economic growth in the east. Abstract:The existing theoretical studies on human capital (HC) either highlight the role of education or underline the effect of health. In more and more case studies, two indicators--education and health--have been employed in the measurement of HC, but not a study has given the concrete formation shapes of HC. In this article, we take education and health as two kinds of capital, which generate HC according to Cobb-Douglas technology. There are two theories about how HC impacts on economic growth: one is that economic growth originates in the accumulation speed of HC, the other holds that in economic growth the credit should be given to HC stock. In this paper, we have constructed an endogenous growth model, in which both HC accumulation speed and stock have an effect on economic growth--in other words, both of them contribute to economic growth. Taking this endogenous model as the foundation of our theory, we have designed our econometric model; by the use of the data from China's provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, 29 in number, we have made a case study of the effect of HC accumulation and stock and formation factors (education and health) on China's economic growth.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the sources and prospects for economic growth in China with a focus on human capital. First, we provide an overview of the role that labor has played in China's economic success. We then describe China's hukou policy, which divides China's labor force into two distinct segments, one composed of rural workers and the other of urban workers. For the rural labor force, we focus on the challenges of raising human capital by both increasing basic educational attainment rates as well as the quality of education. For the urban labor force, we focus on the issues of further expanding enrollment in college education as well as improving the quality of college education. We use a regression model to show the typical relationship between human capital and output in economies around the world and demonstrate how that relationship has evolved since 1980. We show that China has made substantial strides both in the education level of its population and in the way that education is being rewarded in its labor markets. However, as we look ahead, our results imply that China may find it impossible to maintain what appears to be its desired growth rate of 7 percent in the next 20 years; a growth rate of 3 percent over the next two decades seems more plausible. Finally, we present policy recommendations, which are rooted in the belief that China continues to have substantial room to improve the human capital of its labor force.

Abstract:This paper studies how the human capital embedded in rank-and-file employees affects firms' stock price crash risk. Employing a unique setting in China where we measure human capital using employee information at the firm level, we show that human capital quality improves firms' internal information environments, curbs bad-news hoarding and overinvestment, leading to lower stock price crash risk. The findings are robust to instrumental variable regressions. Our study highlights the internal informational role of human capital and sheds light on its implications for capital markets and outside investors. Therefore, we contribute to the literature on the interaction between non-shareholding stakeholders and shareholders.
