Abstract:Based on oligopoly theory, this paper examines the impact of underwriters'regional oligopoly on IPO pricing using the data of A-share listed companies from 1994 to 2010.We find that IPO firms underwritten by regional oligopolistic underwriters are more underpriced than those underwritten by non-regional oligopolistic underwriters. Underwriters' regional oligopoly has stronger impact on the SOEs owned by the local governments. However, underwriters' regional oligopoly has no significant effect on the SOEs owned by the central government or the non-SOEs.The impact of underwriters'regional oligopoly on IPO pricing is weaker after the issuing system was changed from administrative approval to free pricing. The results are robust after we control for the effects of non-regional small underwriters and use alternative measures of IPO pricing. At last, conclusions are drawn that underwriters' regional oligopoly is one of the factors that affect IPO pricing.
